May 10, 2017

Please be advised that both Ms Cote and I will be attending a conference tomorrow, Thursday, May 11th and will not be in the building.  We will return all calls and messages on Friday, May 12th. If there is an emergency,  please call Howe school at 313-827-7000.  All work sites and CBI will run as scheduled with the exception of The Henry.  The Henry Hotel site will be cancelled so that one of our paraprofessionals can be with the substitute in the afternoon.

Thank you!

April 26, 2017

Hello!

The year is rapidly winding down so there may be more blog posts as so many things will be happening between now and June..please keep an eye out for them!

I just made reservations with Buddy’s Pizza for our Weekend Activity on Saturday.  We have a 2 hour limit, so please be on time!  We will be on the lookout for students coming in, but you can also ask for the group from Dearborn Schools once you come inside and they will point you in the right direction.   Students ordering pizza should bring $10.  I had two students opt to order an entree from the menu, and they will need to bring $20 to ensure their bill is covered.  Please do not send any money to school, they should bring it with them on Saturday.

We want to send a big shout out to Yasmeen who is working hard in therapy and getting well!  We miss you so much and think of you every day!   It’s not the same without you!

Ms. Khadija Hicks started this week as our new paraprofessional, replacing Ms. Brickey who left earlier this semester.  She is already doing a fantastic job and we are so excited to have her with us!  She will spend the next 3-4 weeks training at our job sites, and then will finish off the year joining us on CBI trips.  By next fall she’ll be a pro!  🙂

School supplies for Fall 2017: (you will see this more than once throughout the end of the year!)

  • Academic Planner (8.5  x 11 size is the best – gives room for writing)  Should be a monthly planner – not daily
  • Wallet/Purse or both  (Please, student should not be carrying money in their pockets)
  • Watch or phone to tell time
  • 5 Pencils
  • 1 box colored pencils
  • Pencil Case
  • Calculator
  • Thermal lunch bag with cold pack
  • Girls – feminine hygiene supplies for emergencies – to be kept in purse or backpack (we do not have supplies here)

That’s it for now!  Enjoy the beautiful weather!!!!!

April 19, 2017

Hello!

We have scheduled our next weekend activity for Saturday, April 29th at 2 p.m.   We will be having lunch at Buddy’s Pizza.  Information is coming home today, please RSVP by Monday, April 24th so we can plan accordingly.   Please remember that transportation must be provided by the family, and students must be picked up within 15 minutes of the pick up time.  Some families carpool – one person drives to the activity, the other family picks up.  Something to think about to save a little time, and the students love attending the activities together.  Just make sure we know at the drop off that they will be going home with another family.

Next month we will begin our cooking classes with the Michigan State University Extension Program.  It is a series of classes designed for students with cognitive impairments.  They will be teaching the students basic nutrition, kitchen skills and food safety techniques.  Additionally, they will use basic kitchen appliances such as a microwave and/or a slow cooker.  We are excited to have them join us. The dates for the classes are May 5, May 12, May 19, May 23, June 6, June 9 and June 13.  Each class will be one hour long, from 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Don’t forget – No School May 26 and May 29 – Conference Release Day/Memorial Day

March 31, 2017

Wishing everyone a fantastic Spring Break!  When we get back, the time’s really going to fly!  (There will only be 47 school days left!)

We’d also like to wish Ali Salman best wishes as he leaves our program today!  He is very excited, and we will miss seeing his smile every morning!

Also, please note:  If you’d like to send in a treat for your son/daughters birthday, you are more than welcome, but please arrange it with us so that we can make sure we will be here when you want to send them in, and that the date does not conflict with anything else we have going on.

Thank you!

Enjoy the break!

March 24, 2017

Hello!  Not too many announcements this week.  We have one more week to go until Spring Break!  Next week will be our final round to Kerby’s, and then we will resume our regular trips to Target in April.   The students enjoy Kerby’s so much, we will try to do one more trip in May to end the year.

Thank you for enrolling with REMIND.  Everyone should have received a text message from me last Friday.  We still have a few parents who have not sent their form back in.  If would like to receive emergency announcements, please be sure to do that.

Conferences:  It’s that time of year!  We will be sending conference information home on Monday.  We do not need to speak with everyone, since we are in contact with some of you quite frequently.  We are always available if there is something you would like to discuss.

Upcoming Dates:

April 3-7 Spring Break

April 11-13 – No job / community sites – high school testing**

April 12th – Late Start

April 14th – Good Friday – No School

We are exited to welcome Michigan State University to our classroom!  They will be offering an 8 week healthy cooking program to the students beginning in May!

** We will plan an alternate schedule for these days, with some fun activities for the students!  Stay tuned!

Have a great weekend!

New App for Emergencies

In your son/daughters back pack, you will find a note about a new app called “Remind” that we will be using to send the class important announcements.  We will only be using the app for big announcements and emergencies (such as power outages!) .  We will still use the blog for our general day to day classroom announcements and news.  The app is set up for one way messaging only, we will not be able to receive messages from you this way and other parents will not see your contact information.  Please return the form with your name, and up to two cell phone numbers per family to receive the text messages, by Friday, March 17, 2017.
