October 30, 2017

Hello!  Happy Halloween!  Just a few announcements as we finish October and head into November…..

Tomorrow, we will purchase pizza for the students and watch a Halloween movie in the afternoon.  No need to have students bring in a movie – we already have “Goosebumps” and are planning to watch that.  Students do not need to bring a lunch tomorrow.  We will be eating lunch around 12:00.  Students may pass out candy if they wish.  It is entirely optional.  (We have 24 students in the class if everyone is here.)

Students scheduled to go to Target tomorrow will actually be going to Kerby’s Koney Island for breakfast.  We eat between 8:30-9:00 a.m.  Since we will be having pizza in the afternoon we are encouraging students to have a lighter breakfast.  Menu’s will be coming home this afternoon to make selections.  (Fowzi, Ali A., Abbas, Mo K., Munasar)

Half Day on Friday, November 3, 2017!  Students will be dismissed at 11:00 a.m.

Sheet Orders Due Friday, November 3, 2017

No School – Tuesday, November 7, 2017

Late Start – Wednesday, November 15, 2017

DIY Weekend Activity information will be coming home today as well.  The students will be on their own this month!  Activities will be due December 1, 2017

Finally, Parent Teacher Conferences will be coming up mid-November.  Information will be coming home soon.  They will be by appointment only on November 9, 15, and 16th.

Have a great week!

October 19, 2017

Hello!

Thank you to all who came out to our first Parent Meeting!  We will be sending home the parent survey that was handed out at the meeting for everyone to fill out.  We will be hosting several other meetings this year and we’d like to hear from you what information you need.  Whether it’s Guardianship, CMH, Social Security, Recreation Programs, etc.  We will be bringing in speakers to address the topics you need most help with.  Additionally, there is a place on the survey for you to ask specific questions about the transition program if necessary.  We understand that transition can be overwhelming and we want to provide the information you need and support you in any way we can.

Our sheet sale started this week!  The profits from this sale go directly to our class.  We use the funds to buy supplies, provide activities, pay for all students to attend the End of the Year/Graduation Celebration, etc.  Thank you in advance for your support!

On Halloween, we will be purchasing pizza for the students, and we will watch a movie in the afternoon.    They do not need to bring a lunch that day.  We will provide pizza and drinks.  Students may bring candy to pass out if they wish, but it is not required.  (So many have asked I thought I better mention it!) We will still be attending morning job sites and CBI sites.  Please no costumes.  Students may wear a Halloween t-shirt if they have one or Halloween colors if they wish.

November’s Weekend Activity is “On Your Own” – watch for information to come home soon.  Students must invite a friend from class (or more than one) and plan an activity for fun.  Several of our students are already cheering when I mention it in class – they are very excited!!!!!

CONGRATULATIONS – Tori Gontarski, Susie Grandas and Munasar Sofyan – who all took our Healthy Lunch Program to heart  and have been bringing healthy lunches consistently!  Special mention to Andrew Hutchison who has improved his lunch significantly!    Thank you to the families for supporting our efforts in teaching the students healthy habits!

Upcoming Dates:

November 3 – Half Day

November 7 – No school

November 15 – Late Start

November 22-24 – No School, Thanksgiving Break

October 9, 2017

Hello!  We hope everyone had a great weekend!  We had a great time at Three Cedars Farm!  No matter what you did this weekend, we hope you were able to get out and enjoy this weather.

Just a few reminders…

  • Please remember to check your student’s planner daily.
  • Students need to bring a bagged lunch every day – we do not have items for purchase here at Hype
  • When your son/daughter is scheduled to go to Fairlane, we will be eating lunch.  The students should be able to communicate whether they have any type of dietary requirements (halal, allergies, etc. ) but if you would like to make sure dietary guidelines are followed, please let us know.  We will make note of it on their CBI form that was sent home earlier in the year.
  • Please be mindful of absences.  Students are not allowed to skip work sites and attend only CBI sites.   If there are health concerns that we are unaware of please let us know so that we can take this into consideration.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.

October 5, 2017

Hello!  Can you believe it’s October already?  Well here we are and things are happening so quickly in our program.  I wanted to catch you up to speed on a few things….

Tomorrow’s Zumba class will be here at Hype, instead of at the studio.  We have been advised against driving students in our personal vehicles, so we are very thankful Ms. Susan was willing to come to us instead!  We are ready to have a blast!  Students should come to school in comfortable clothing, tennis shoes, and may want to bring a bottle of water.  They may bring a change of clothes if they like (like we do for Planet Fitness).

We also welcome Mr. Tank back for Self Defense tomorrow afternoon.  He has volunteered to come every other week this year – and we are so thankful for that as well.  The students are very excited for tomorrow.

Saturday, October 7th, is our Family Trip to Three Cedars Farms.  I will send home a map to all who have RSVP’d tomorrow.  We will be there from 2-4 with our families.  We are looking forward to seeing everyone and having a good time!  Please note – this is not a drop off activity.

It was great seeing so many of you already for annual IEP’s.  We always enjoy meeting with you and it was nice to have Dr. Bazzi-Gates attend with us as well.  I really enjoyed the day.  Please don’t wait for an IEP to discuss concerns with us – we are able to meet with you anytime, but please make an appointment so we can be prepared.

The students are doing a great job at the job sites and out in the community.  We are off to a great start!

Future Dates:

October 13 – Half day – dismissal at 11:00 a.m.

October 18 – Late start – 9:00 am arrival

October 18 – Parent Meet and Greet 11:30-1:00

September 20, 2017

Hello!

We will be starting job sites and CBI sites next week!  We’re very excited to get out and about!  We will have schedules in student planners by Friday, so that you know where your son/daughter will be going at any given time.  We also have a few new activities coming up – that are still in the planning stages, we expect to start those within the next few weeks.  Stay tuned for details.

This Friday, September 22 we will be walking to the Bone Yard Restaurant for lunch.  Menus will be sent home tomorrow and students should bring in money on Friday.  This will be a nice way to celebrate job and CBI sites starting on Monday!  Our new students don’t realize how busy they will be beginning on Monday – but they will love it!

Please check your son/daughters backpack for information regarding:

October 7 – 1st Weekend FAMILY Activity at Three Cedars Farm 7897 Six Mile Road, Northville MI  48167

October 18  – Late Start AND Family Meet and Greet Luncheon 11:30-1:00 at Hype

Planet Fitness Families – Please make sure you reinstate your membership if you cancelled for the summer.  We will be headed there on Monday.  New this year – students need to have their Membership ID with them in order to attend.  Thank you!

September 13, 2017

Hello!  A few reminders….

A few students till need planners.   Students are left out and can’t participate in the activity when they don’t have their planners.  It’s also very difficult to  keep families informed of everything going on without them.  This is the most important item on the list.

Friday September 15 we will be going to the DIA.  This is free of charge.  Students need to bring a bagged lunch.  If your son/daughter does not wish to go they can stay home.  There will not be anyone left in the classroom.

Friday October 6 we will be going to Vibe Fit Studio in Allen Park for a Zumba lesson!  The students are so excited!  The cost is $5 per student. Some students have opted out of this trip.  There will be a group staying back at Hype because we know this is not for everyone.  Please check your son/daughter’s planner to see whether they are going.  Please send in your payment by Sept 29th.

Sunday October 15 – Self-Defense Workshop at Vibe Fit Studio.   This is for any parent interested.  Mr. Tank, who gives his time to teach our students self defense throughout the year, will be conducting a three hour self defense workshop for adults.  The material is too intense for our students, but it is valuable information and something I think many of you would enjoy.  I went last year and I’ve never had 3 hours go by so fast!  Incredible informative and fun at the same time.  I will share the information to our class Facebook page for more information.

SHEET SALE!  Get ready…it’s coming!  Anticipated date is mid-October.

Just a friendly reminder:  Students need a lunch every day.  After September 25 we will no longer call home for forgotten lunches. Students will be given a snack at school and charged $1.

Welcome to the 2017-2018 School Year

Hello!  We hope everyone is enjoying their summer!  We’d like to welcome all our new students and their families to the class!  We’re looking forward to a great year.  Since we do have quite a few new families, I thought I’d post a few reminders to get everyone started!   We understand not only the students are transitioning from a K-12 program, but so are the parents.  We hope this little “survival guide” will help get things off to a great start for you!

CALENDAR

We are part of Howe School and follow the elementary calendar regarding days off and half days.  Additionally, if Howe School is closed due to inclement weather, we will also be closed.

JOB SITES and COMMUNITY BASED INSTRUCTION

Job sites and CBI will begin towards the end of September/beginning of October, once transportation is able to schedule our runs.  This is a HUGE task and in the meantime, it’s a good time for the students to get reacquainted and used to a routine.  By the time we’re ready to go out, it’s not so overwhelming.  We are one of the only districts that provides this much transportation to get the students into the community, and we are so thankful to the Transportation Department for their support of our program.

MEETINGS

If you need to meet with us we are happy to do so.  Please call or text our classroom phone to set up an appointment.  Showing up unannounced takes instructional time away from students and it is hard to focus on your needs when we should be teaching.  We can accommodate most schedules if we know ahead of time.

FACEBOOK

Don’t forget to “Like” our Facebook Page:  “Dearborn Transition Program” to see pictures of the students and our activities throughout the year.

COMMUNICATION:

It’s very important to check you son/daughters planner every night.  This is the link between us and you.  It will have job assignments, community based instruction assignments, field trips, etc inside.

This blog is published (most) Friday afternoons and will go directly to your inbox.  Please make sure you read it to stay on top of classroom information.  Paper notes are not sent home.

Remind System:  If you provided your cell phone number, you have been subscribed.  This will be used for group texts to be sent from one of the classroom teachers to the entire class, while keeping phone numbers private.  You cannot reply to these messages – they are outgoing only.

Facebook Page:  A fun way to see pictures of the students and their activities in the program.  Sometimes we will post other helpful information there as well.

Meetings:  We are happy to meet with you if you would like a meeting.   Please just schedule an appoinment as mentioned above.

Language Assistance:  If you need assistance, please call Lila Amen at 313-827-3120

Enjoy what’s left of summer!  Looking forward to seeing everyone in a few weeks!  🙂

June 15, 2017

Somehow, summer vacation starts at the end of the day tomorrow.  When we started in September, it seemed lightyears away.  Then I blinked, and here it is!  We’ve had a great year.  The students have made progress in many areas, becoming more and more independent and ready to face the world.  We are so proud of how far they’ve come!

Tomorrow will be Sabrina’s last day of school.  I know I will keep looking for her come September! She’s been in my class since I was moved to Howe almost 6 years ago now.  She is excited to be done and I am happy for her, but we will really miss her!

Sarah and Hadi are moving up to Project Search next year and I couldn’t be more thrilled for them!  They will have wonderful opportunities there and Mrs. Frizzell is an awesome teacher…I know they will be in good hands!  Still, it’s hard to say goodbye!  😢 (I’ve known Sarah since preschool!)

Thank you for your support in all we do!  For sending the right supplies, following along in their planners, getting on board with our Healthy Lunch Program, and so much more – we couldn’t do it without you!

We also couldn’t do it without our amazing parapros, and I do mean AMAZING!!!  We are so fortunate to have each one of them with us.  They are so talented, kind and generous to each and every one of our students!  They make us look good!  😊

I hope everyone has a great summer!  I’m looking forward to a little sun, sand and surf! 🌊  Whatever your plans are – be safe and enjoy!

Until September ~

Mrs. Camp

(Mrs. Cote too!)

Benihana

Hello!

Information will be coming home today regarding our Benihana trip on June 12th.  Please make a lunch selection and return to us by June 2nd.   This trip will be paid for using our fundraiser money, so there is no cost to the families.  That being said, if your son/daughter cannot go to or does not want to go, please keep them home for the day.  We will be gone most of the day.   There is a spot to indicate whether your son/daughter will be staying home on the back of the form.   Please let us  know so that we can make the necessary adjustments to our reservation.  This will likely be our last year going to Benihana’s as explained in the information being sent home today.

Please note:  Some students lost the opportunity to attend this trip with us.  If you do not receive a menu, your son/daughter has lost this opportunity, but you should have been previously contacted regarding this matter.
