Hello!

We have been discussing safety plans and practicing fire and lockdown drills in class for a few weeks now.  The students are doing an excellent job.  While practicing these things can be scary, we are all much safer if we are prepared.  Just last week the fire alarm went off here at Hype and the students handled it beautifully.  (It was a false alarm!)  We have talked about things like “what if we have to go to the bathroom during a lockdown?” or “what if we are uncomfortable from being in one spot?”   So if you hear your son/daughter talking about these things, this is likely why.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.

Reminder:  Money for Bowling ($10) is due by Friday!  We are looking forward to a great time!!

Spring Break:  March 30-April 6

**For your planning purposes – the 2018-2019 calendar has been released.  It is TENATIVE, however, students are scheduled to return to school on August 27th next year.

Sick Policy Reminder:

Students MUST stay home for 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting, diarrhea or a fever.  Coming to school before a student has been cleared puts everyone at risk.  Please be considerate and follow the rules, regardless of how well your son/daughter claims to feel.

Weekend Activity:

Movie times have been released and we will see Peter Rabbit at 12:30 at the Cinnemark Theater at Southland.  Please meet us in the lobby by 12:00 p.m.   We will be purchasing tickets as a group due to assigned seating.  Tickets are $7 and can be given to me anytime between now and the movie time.  Tickets will only be purchased for those who have RSVP’d by Friday.    If your son/daughter would like concessions, please provide approximately $15 in addition to the ticket cost.  They are so expensive (but so good!).

Bowling!

We snagged a bus and we plan to go bowling on Monday, March 19th.   We just found out about this today, so reservations still need to be made, but if all goes well the cost should be about $10 per student and will cover two games of bowling, shoes, pizza and pop.  We are so excited!!!!

Spring Break:

No School Friday March 30th – Friday April 6th

Our Valentine’s Party is under way!  We just finished Zumba and our lunch is on it’s way!  What a great way to end the week!

During class time today, we took some time to discuss Internet Safety.   The students will be bringing home an “Internet Safety Pledge” and their homework is to have a discussion with their parents about it.  We will be bringing in a speaker in June for our final parent meeting, to discuss internet safety and what parents have to watch out for.  There are so many dangers out there and with technology ever changing, it’s something we always have to keep on top of.   Did you know there are apps, that hide other apps, so that they can’t be seen by an unknowing parent?!?!  There are!  We have to do everything we can to keep our kids safe!

We also took a few minutes to discuss the shooting in Florida this week.  One of our students was very concerned, and wanted to know what he should do if that ever happened.  We will continue practicing our safety procedures in the weeks and months to come.  Hopefully we will NEVER have to use them, but we need to be prepared just in case.  “Hope for the best, plan for the worst!”

For those of you going on vacation next week, have a great time!  For the rest, I hope you get plenty of rest and relaxation.  This is always such a nice break from the day to day hustle and bustle!  When we come back, our Parent Talk classes will begin on Monday, February 26th, at 9:30.

See everyone in a week! 🙂

Happy Valentines Day!

Just a reminder that we will be having our official Valentine’s Day party on Friday!  It’s the perfect way to get ready for the break!

I also wanted to remind parents to please check the settings on your son/daughters social media accounts.  I was just alerted to a very scary message sent to one of our students from someone he didn’t know.  The message contained the mans age, where he lived, and asked the student where he lived as well.  Thankfully we were able to instruct the student NOT to answer any questions and to NEVER meet a stranger.  The student had all kinds of messages from people he did not know.  Please, please please check the settings!  On Facebook, settings should be set at “Friends Only” – and students should not be accepting friendships from anyone he/she doesn’t know personally.

Mid Winter Break – February 19-23  NO SCHOOL!!!!  🙂

February 8, 2018

Hello!  Is everyone watching for the big snow storm coming?  Well, in anticipation of a possible snow day tomorrow, I thought I would get this out today as there are a few things to share with you.  Before I forget – anyone who checked out books from the library may want to get those back to the library tonight!  If there is a snow day tomorrow,  we wont be going and I don’t want anyone to have late fines.  If you can’t make it – you can call the library and re-check the books out over the phone.  This will give you another week before the books are due!  Students who brought library materials back early will be bringing them home tonight just to be on the safe side.  Unfortunately, we do not have a library run today.

Parent Talk Workshop:  Dates and Times have changed!  The new dates are:  February 26, March 5, 12, 19, 26, April 9, 16 and 17.  The new time is:  9:30 – 11:00 a.m.   We hope this works better with everyone’s schedule.  If you did not register – there’s still time!  Just let us know and we will make sure we have materials for you!

Weekend Activity!  We had a great time at Buddy’s!  February is a D.I.Y month!  Anyone who organizes a weekend activity with a friend from class will be entered into a drawing to win a prize.  Our printer is currently jammed, as soon as we can get it fixed we will send home the information.

Valentines Day!  We are going to celebrate on Friday the 16th.  We are going to start with heart healthy Zumba!  The cost for Zumba is $5 per person.  If there are any moms (or sisters) out there that would like to join us you are more than welcome!  It is a great time and it’s fun to see how much the students LOVE it!  Please send money in no later than Wednesday the 14th.  Students may bring valentines cards, or candy if they wish but it is optional.  (We really don’t need 24 bags of candy floating around!)  We will be purchasing lunch for the students that day – so they will not need a lunch.  Please do not send valentines/candy to school on the 14th – everything will take place on Friday, the 16th.

Mid Winter Break  – School will be closed February 19-23

March 10th – Next Weekend Activity – Cinnemark Theater, Southland (Tentatively – Peter Rabbit)

January 30, 2018

Hello!

Now that the second semester has begun, we are going to be more strict with the students in regards to dressing and hygiene.   Students should come to school in clean, fresh clothes every day.  (We should not see the same outfit two days in a row) Their hair should be combed neatly, teeth brushed, and deodorant on.  Students who do  not demonstrate proper dress or hygiene will not go to their assigned work or CBI site, as this is what would be expected in any employment or social setting.   Thank you for your understanding!

January 29th, 2018

We seem to have a stomach bug going around – we have 6 students out and 2 more going home today.  Make that 3 going home…..since starting this another student has gotten ill.  Please watch for any symptoms.  As a reminder, students should be free of any fever, vomiting, and/or diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school.

Also a reminder, we follow the elementary calendar because we are part of Howe School.  When Howe has a half day, we have a half day.  Today the high schools have a half day but Howe does not, therefore the students at Hype have a full day of school as well.  Likewise, if there is an emergency, such as a weather related emergency,  that will close Howe School, Hype will also be closed.

Two informational flyers will be coming home today regarding A Night to Shine and a Guardianship Workshop.  I have attended the Guardian Workshop and I highly recommend it to anyone who has questions regarding planning for guardianship or power of attorney for their son or daughter.   The speaker is excellent and it will open your eyes to situations you may not have thought about before.  I would go as far as saying this is a MUST for anyone who has a student in this program.

January 24, 2018

Hello!

We just found out that due to the half day schedule at the high schools, we will not have busing available to us for CBI or job sites this week.  Students will be here all day today, Thursday, and half day on Friday.   Students who were scheduled to go to Fairlane tomorrow will go next week.   Normally we schedule around these days when we know ahead of time, but we were late to get the notice this time.

We will be having a class lunch tomorrow.  Students should bring a drink only.  We will provide cheese pizza for everyone.  There is no cost – we will be using our fundraiser money!  🙂  Students may bring a snack for an afternoon movie if they wish.

Registration forms will be sent home today for the Parent Talk workshop beginning in February.  Please be sure to fill those out and return by Monday, January 29th so that we can prepare enough materials.  (If you missed the first meeting please feel free to attend the workshop, they are exclusive of each other.)    We received great feedback from the parents that attended, and everyone is looking forward to beginning the series!  If you need more forms for someone you think might benefit from this series, please feel free to make copies or request more from us.

Buddy’s Pizza is a Go!  We have a good number of students joining us on Saturday.  We are very excited and looking forward to a fun time!  We will be under “Dearborn Schools” if we are not at the front when you arrive.  Please remember $10/student for those ordering pizza, pop, bread and salad.  Those wanting to order from the menu are welcome to do so, but should bring about $20 to cover the cost of their meal.

Reminder:  Friday is a half day!  Students will be dismissed at 11:00.   No lunch.
