We had a great time with our scavenger hunt today! Munasar took first place! When we play again we will play two games and have two winners! Everyone did such a great job! These games are fun, but they also give us a lot of information about our students in a short amount of time. They answer questions such as:

  • Do students know where the items are in their house? (If they are using them they should know)
  • Do they use these items to practice daily living skills?
  • Do they sit and wait for someone to find the items for them or do they do it themselves? (If they wait for someone to help them, they likely do this in other areas too)
  • Do they understand the curriculum (food groups, money)?
  • Do they give up easily or keep going? (stamina on the job)

Next week:

  • We will start to implement our Healthy Lunch and Fitness programs at Hype.
  • Monday will be a pizza party from one of the bus drivers for the in-person students. Students do not need a lunch but will need to bring their own drink. Students are not allowed to bring pop to Hype – please bring water, flavored water, gator-ade, juice, carbonated water, etc.
  • Friday is scheduled to be a half day for professional development. I haven’t received any details on that yet – please watch for further information.

That’s it for now! I hope everyone enjoys their weekend! It looks beautiful right now!

Good Morning! Just a few reminders….

This week’s schedule: All students will be virtual this Thursday and Friday March 11th and 12th. There is only one time for the virtual class – 10 a.m. Please use the recurring link that was sent a few weeks ago. If you cannot locate it, it is also at the top of the blog in “class info”. Friday is a scavenger hunt – be prepared to find items within the house!

Remind App: Replies on the Remind App have been turned off now that we are in the classroom 5 days a week. You can text the class phone any time – but we will only be available to answer during school hours. Our class phone number is: 313-701-7985. If you would like a return call, please leave us a message. This is a very young and active class, they keep us busy! We will get back to you as soon as possible, but unless it is an emergency, it might not be until the students leave at the end of the day. In case of an emergency – please text as we are able to see that quicker than a voice mail. Likewise, if there is an emergency here, we will always text first, and will follow with a phone call.

Pizza Lunch: We have very generous bus drivers who donated money to buy the students a pizza lunch. We are checking with our administrators on whether there are any protocols we need to follow and then we will announce the date. I’m also aware that the bus drivers told the students about the lunch. We will always announce something like that ahead of time so that everyone can be prepared. Please always send your student with a lunch unless you have heard from us.

Upcoming Dates:

March 19 – 1/2 day

March 29 – April 5 – Spring Break

SCHEDULE CHANGE

ALL students will be virtual March 4, 5 and March 11, 12. The district has scheduled all students to be remote to allow district staff to receive the covid vaccination. Please use the recurring link to log on at 10 a.m on those days. There will be no in person instruction.

In Person Learning Labs Cancelled Feb 26, 2021

Due to a water main break, in person learning labs will be cancelled for Friday February 26, 2021. The City of Dearborn Heights will be turning off the water at 9 a.m. in order to make repairs. The time estimated to complete the repairs is unknown.

All students will be virtual tomorrow at 10 a.m. This was a planned Leisure Recreation day. Students should log on tomorrow with their Bingo Cards (using numbers 1-25) and markers. Prizes will be awarded for the first three Bingo’s! (Virtual students will have to accept an I.O.U!) We are including a link to print your own Bingo card, however cards were included in a previous packet and students were asked to keep them for future use. We understand that things happen, so the link is provided to ensure all students who want to participate are able to do so. Students who were in the afternoon learning labs were able to take a card home with them today!

Good Morning!

It’s official, we are moving to our hybrid schedule on Monday March 1, 2021. At this time, I do not have any information on bus routes, you will want to call transportation to verify the pick up and drop off times for your student. (313-827-3300). Please keep in mind, now that routes are changing, your current route/times may change if you are a learning lab student.

For Monday:

  • Masks are required
  • Students need to bring their own lunch. Please pack lunches in an insulated lunch bag with a cold pack as necessary. We do not have the capability to keep things cold or heat things up here at Hype. Students do not have access to a microwave. Soft Drinks (Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew) are not allowed at Hype – students must bring water, juice, vitamin water, etc. for their lunch.
  • Supplies Needed: Planner, pencils, scissors, glue sticks, pencil box, and the work packets that will be delivered this week.
  • You may also bring: a phone, tablet and headphones, or anything you want to look at (magazines, books) during leisure time.
  • As a reminder: Visitors are not allowed inside the room, please call the class phone if you need to pick up/drop off a student and we will make sure they get to the lobby safely. Class phone: 313-701-7985

Next week we will be sending home permission slips that will allow students to walk the track here at Hype, which is part of our fitness curriculum. As Ms. Cote and I have been here this week, we feel it will be relatively safe for students to walk the track in small groups. Most people wear their masks on the track, but there are no guarantees, so we feel more comfortable asking for permission before we do so.

As always, please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. We are excited to see everyone on Monday.

PS If you indicated you would be returning this year but you are still not ready – please just put the “E” in the window on Monday so the bus knows to continue on their route.

Hello!

I wanted to send this out before the questions started coming in!

Regarding the Hybrid Schedule in which all students who want to return, will be returning:

  • We have not been told whether that will begin March 1 or March 8, we are still waiting to hear from the district
  • We do not have bus route information. The fastest way to obtain that is to call the transportation department at 313-827-3300 and ask for your pick up and drop off times.
  • Student hours will be 8:50-1:30, Monday-Friday
  • Students will need to bring a cold lunch – lunch is not served at Hype (There is nothing to purchase here, the cafĂ© is closed due to covid, and does not run during the school day under normal circumstances, so please do not send your student without a lunch)

For virtual students: The link will be open at 9 a.m for you to live stream with the class. You will participate in our opening, calendar and events lesson. This time is optional, you will not be marked late or absent unless you do not attend the 10 a.m. class.

Also, since both Ms. Cote and I are both in the classroom full time now – replies will be turned off on Remind at the end of the day on Friday, February 26th. Please send texts to our classroom phone 313-701-7985. We both answer texts on the phone so if you would like one of us specifically, just let us know. If you call, please leave a message as we don’t return calls without a message. Please keep in mind that you may call or text the classroom phone at any time, but it is left here in the classroom so office hours (8 a.m. – 3 p.m.) apply.

Recurring Link

Dear Families,

As we move into Learning Labs next week, we will also begin to combine our two online groups into one, beginning Tuesday, February 16th. All virtual instruction will begin at 10 a.m. The link below will be a recurring link, good until the end of the year, or until the end of the virtual learning, whichever comes first. If you can’t find it in your email, please refer back to this post. (You can also find the link in the “Class Info” tab on the blog.) As a reminder, students who are attending Learning Labs do not need to log on to virtual lessons – as the material will be the same both in person and online.

February 5, 2021

Hello! We have exciting news! The district has decided to open Learning Labs beginning February 16th. If you were in a Learning Lab this fall, transportation is already set up. They will be running the same routes with the same times. Which means if your son/daughter was in a morning learning lab, they will continue to be in a morning learning lab. If they were in an afternoon learning lab, they will continue to be in an afternoon learning lab. They are unable to accommodate changes or requests at this time. You will receive a call from our staff next week to go over all of the details.

If you were not in a learning lab this fall, and you would like to be, you will need to provide transportation to and from the Learning Lab. We are anticipating that we will be back to school shortly after Learning Labs reopen. Anyone who responded that they would like to return when schools reopen will have transportation set up for them.

Students will either attend Learning Labs, or they will attend virtually, but not both. The same information will be presented to both groups and this gives opportunity for more individualized attention for both groups as well. For now, Ms. Cote will be at Hype conducting the Learning Labs, (yes! Learning Labs will be at Hype!) and I will be doing the virtual instruction. Students might see us pop into each others classes from time to time just to make sure we’re seeing everyone.

Once we move into school reopening, the virtual instruction will look a little different and and may happen from inside the classroom. Students may be virtually joining the same lessons the in person students are participating in, so it may have a different feel to it.

Also, we all know how things can change in an instant. Information is coming at us quickly and it changes frequently. We will continue to get the information to you as quickly as possible!

Learning lab reminders:

  1. Properly fitting masks will be required at all times (They cannot be so large that they continually slide down)

2. Students will need to bring their own supplies

3. Visitors are not allowed in the classroom – if you need to drop off your student or pick them up early, please text the classroom phone and we will make sure your son/daughter gets down to the lobby doors. 313-701-7985

4. Students may bring a snack – but nothing that needs to be reheated. Please make sure this is a quick, easy snack. This should not be anything messy or stinky. LOL (It happens!) Good examples: Granola Bars, Fruit, Yogurt, Popcorn, etc.

5. For safety reasons, we will not be using the gym or the track at this time.

6. Due to sensitivities – we are a scent free classroom. Please no cologne or perfume.

REMINDERS:
Mid-Winter Break – Feb 12-15 – No School

Classes will be combined at 10 a.m. next week Monday-Thursday

Hello! I hope this finds you well. We have been able to contact most everyone about the return to class. Transportation requests have been filled out and turned in. If you do not plan on returning right away, please put the “E” in your window to let the bus know to keep on going! Here’s what we know so far about the reopening of schools:

  • The positivity rate must be below 5% – as reported on Tuesday’s.
  • Once it is below 5%, we will begin reopening schools the following Monday. ( I will send a message through Remind)
  • We will be at Hype
  • Our program will not be in a learning lab format, currently as many as 21 students will be in the room, with 5 staff members (26 adults total)
  • The new guidelines are to space staff and students 3-6′ apart. We have requested smaller student tables so that we can provide more spacing for our students.
  • Student hours will be from 8:50-1:30
  • Students will need to bring their own lunch. Please send in an insulated bag or thermos. We do not have a microwave or a refrigerator to heat or keep foods refrigerated.
  • We will not be going to community sites or job sites at this time.
  • We will not be using the basketball courts or track at this time (or until we determine it is safe to do so)
  • Students and staff will be required to wear a mask, except while eating and will be expected to social distance.
  • Unfortunately we cannot have visitors in our room. Any late drop offs or early pick ups will have to text the classroom phone – we will make sure your student gets to your car safely.
  • Finally, please be diligent in monitoring your students health. Students should stay home if they have a fever, cough, sore throat, chills, etc.

For students who wish to remain virtual, or who may not be attending right away, we will be virtual from the classroom. Details still have to be worked out, but we will provide them as soon as possible.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions you might have!

Upcoming Dates:

Feb 12-15 – No School – February Break

Have a great weekend!

Hello! If you saw the remind text, you know we are beginning to prepare for the schools to reopen. Our staff will be making phone calls today and tomorrow to get an idea of how many students plan to return to school. (We need to turn in this in on Friday) We need this information in order to put transportation requests in, as well as to make sure we have the space we need to accommodate the students. Additionally, it gives us an idea of how many students intend to remain virtual, so can prepare for that as well.

When we return, school hours will be 8:50-1:30. At this time, I do not know if we will be at Howe or at Hype, once we know that, we will be able to answer more of the questions that are starting to come in. We hope to have more details for you later this week.

As a reminder, in order to return, the positivity rate must be below 5% for two consecutive weeks. The numbers come in on Tuesdays, and I do not believe we are below 5% as of today, so the earliest we would return would be the week of February 15th, if the numbers are below 5% on Feb 2, and again on Feb 9.

Upon returning, students will be required to wear a mask that covers both their nose and mouth for the whole day. I don’t anticipate being able to take “mask breaks” at this time, due to the weather.

We will not be going to job or community sites at this time.
