Hello! Just a few quick updates:

Circles: We started the Circles Curriculum today – which is a social boundaries curriculum that teaches the appropriate social interactions between students and various family or community members. Most students are familiar with this concept as Level 1 is taught in Ms. True’s room and we continue with Level 2. Today we discussed the six circles (self, close family, close friends, acquaintances, community helpers and strangers) and appropriate interactions with each. We will be discussing appropriate talk and touch within each group (ex: hug or handshake), and we will discuss what to do if someone touches them inappropriately. Everything is rated “PG”. We will also be talking about Social Media and Internet safety at this time. If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call.

Prom: I just received word that the prom for students with special needs will be held on June 8 from 6-9:30 p.m. at Byblos Banquet Hall on Chase in Dearborn. I will pass along information as I receive it. This event is sponsored by the Fordson High School Interact Club.

Kleenex: Thank you so much to those of you who sent in kleenex! It is very much appreciated!

Upcoming Dates:

May 2-3 – No School, EID

May 11 – Late Start

May 27-30 – No School – Memorial Day

June 8 – Prom – More information to follow

June 17 – Last Day of School – 1/2 day 11:30 dismissal

Hello! Just a few short reminders this week:

Please notify the teaching staff if you plan on picking up a student early. Sometimes students get their own ideas or don’t relay details correctly, so we will only hold a student from the bus if we have a call or text from you. Students will be placed on the bus if we do not hear from you. As always, pick up time must be at or before normal dismissal time. Thank you for your cooperation.

Upcoming Dates:

April 13 – Late Start

April 15 – No School

May 2-3 – No School, EID

May 11 – Late Start

May 27-30 – No School – Memorial Day Weekend

June 17 – Last Day of School – Half Day (11:30 Dismissal)

Have a great weekend!

Hello! Just a few updates before we head off for Spring Break!

Chromebooks: Please call or email Howe School with the computer asset tag number on your borrowed chromebook. We were alerted by computer services that chromebooks without those numbers will be deactivated in -the near future. Howe’s number is – 313-827-7000 or you can email Bernadette Drennon at drennob@dearbornschools.org

Coffee Club: When we return we will start a coffee club! It’s a small way to get some practical daily living skills in – but it is completely optional. The district bought us a keurig, kcups, and coffee cups to get us started. With class funds, we purchased sugar, creamer and coffee stirrers. Students who wish to have a coffee break will bring $1 on Friday’s. We will use that money to replenish our supplies as needed.

Upcoming Dates:

April 4 – Return to school

April 13 – Late Start + CBI

April 15 – No School – Good Friday

May 2-3 – No School – EID

Hello Families,

During the school shut down, it was necessary for our staff to contact you using their personal cell phones. On occasion, they still may do so during school hours, for your convenience. If you absolutely need to contact a staff member directly, this is just a friendly reminder to please respect the school hours when doing so. It would be preferred that you call the school phone and ask for the staff member you wish to speak to, but if it is necessary to contact them directly, please do so between the hours of 8:30 and 3:20, also being respectful not to contact them on weekends or vacations. We appreciate your thoughtfulness and cooperation in this matter!

Also, please know, we never give our personal numbers to students. Some students seem to have found them off of parents phones over the course of the last two years. We will be changing those numbers to our classroom phone when we see them, and they are welcome to call or text the classroom phone if they are trying to reach us. Thank you so much for your understanding.

Happy Spring! It’s so exciting to see the sunshine and hints at the warmer weather to come! We will be going outside when we get the chance, so students should bring jackets or wear layers so they will not get cold. Also, if you have a student who is sensitive to the sun, you may wish to apply sunscreen in the morning. (There is a covered picnic area for shade)

Thursday is Subway Day! Students will receive a 6″ sub, chips and a cookie for $1. Please be sure to send in $1 for your student by Wednesday March 23rd. Students will still need to bring a drink that day.

It’s the last week before Spring Break – which means we are winding down and not much “news” to report. Here are the important dates through April:

March 24 – Subway Day! Send $1 to school by Wednesday March 23rd

March 28- April 1 – Spring Break – No School

April 13 – Late Start + Leo’s/Target

March 24th – Subway Day! Bring $1 and a drink

Hello! Instructions for our virtual day are being sent home today. There is a full schedule for the day, please look at it carefully and make sure your student is following the schedule. The link to log on is located on the instruction sheet, as well as located on the blog under “Class Info”. Students should log on at 10 a.m. and attendance will be taken. We do understand that some people have a hard time logging on due to work obligations or poor internet connections, etc. Please make sure your student follows the schedule and completes their work regardless of whether they are able to log on or not. Work should be returned on March 2, 2022.

Heads up: One of the assignments for tomorrow is a cooking assignment to be done with a parent or guardian. It is a simple recipe for apple crisp. Most people will have the ingredients in their house already, but you may wish to look at the ingredient list tonight to make sure you have the groceries on hand. Please complete the recipe review and return with student work.

Upcoming Dates:

March 9 – Late start

March 18 – Half Day – dismissal at 11:30 a.m.

March 28-April 1 – No School – Spring Break

Hello! I hope everyone enjoyed their break! Just a few short messages for our sort week this week.

Mask Update – It seems as if everyone got the memo! Masks are now optional in the classroom. They are still mandatory on the bus. . Please make sure your son/daughter has their facemask for the bus rides to and from school, as well as to and from work or CBI groups.

Utensils for Lunch and Snacks – More and more students are bringing foods that require a fork or spoon to school, but they are not bringing the actual fork or spoon. We are happy to supply the occasional utensil when we have them, but we do not have a cafeteria here to supply these items. Usually they are only available if one of the teachers has an extra on hand.

Supplies – Almost every student is low on colored pencils and glue sticks.

Goodwill Workers – will be going to Bellacino’s again this Friday. To save on cost, we will be ordering large cheese pizza and splitting it instead of placing individual orders. Students should bring in $5 to cover their pizza and a drink. (Why do we do this? When the Goodwill store has a 50% off sale, they don’t have as much work for us to do and they don’t want us working on the floor at that time. It’s a perfect opportunity to make use of our time in the community.) (Shaima, Khadija, Fatimah, Hiba, Deraa)

March 1 – District Wide Virtual Day

Other Upcoming Dates:

March 9 – Late Start and CBI to Target and Leo’s.

Target – Giuseppe, Shaima, Khadija, Tarek, MiMi

Leo’s – Samiah, Ali H., Thakara, Hiba, Aisha

March 18 – Half Day – 11:30 dismissal

March 28-April 1 – No School – Spring Break

February 17, 2022

Hello! Today is the last day before the mid-winter break! Students will return next Wednesday, February 23, 2022. We hope you enjoy this time off! Looks like we’re going to start with some snow!

Just a reminder to send in your Chromebook so we can update them and return them. Some of them look to be in rough shape. I was told today that the district will assess and may charge a fine for damaged Chromebook’s, so please take care of them like your own. Every Chromebook that has been sent in has been updated and will be sent home today.

Students are also coming home today with a “How Your Student Is Doing” assessment. This is a general assessment and not geared towards their IEP goals, but rather a gauge as to how they are handling themselves in the classroom. If your student was marked “below expectations” in age appropriate behavior, that is where you can help at home. While some behaviors are cute when they are little, they tend to be not so cute when they are adults. Having high expectations for our students and expecting them to act like their same age peers is important. Also, giving students responsibilities at home can help increase their maturity level. We want people to see our students for their abilities, not their disabilities! If you need help with this, just let us know!

Upcoming Dates:

March 9th – Late Start

March 18th – No School

March 28- April 1 – No School Spring Break
