Reminders
Please stop by and see us at Hype on Sunday from 12-4! We will be having a bake sale for our classroom! Thank you to everyone who volunteered to make treats for us to sell! Our classroom smells so good already!
Next week is a short week! We will be in school Monday and Tuesday only. Please remember gym clothes for Planet Fitness students and if you are scheduled to go to Leo’s, please bring your money and menu back – with what you plan to order circled. Thank you!
We are encouraging the students to bring healthy snacks from home rather than purchase the “junk” from the vending machines. We are not enforcing any rules, because we want the students to learn to make healthy choices rather than being told they can’t do something. That being said, most of the students have gained a significant amount of weight this month. The average was about 4 pounds. (4lbs a month x12 months = 48 pounds!) Only one student lost weight. The students are working hard at Planet Fitness, and I am confident they are getting a good workout three times a week, which means it is what they are eating that is causing them to gain the weight. We will expand our health and nutrition portion of the class after the break, which will include keeping a food diary. Please watch for more details.
Don’t forget!
Potbelly Fundraiser – TOMORROW! Between 5-8 p.m. 25% of sales will go to our classroom!
Hype Community Day – SUNDAY November 23rd from 12-4. We will be having a bake sale. Join us for family fun, fitness demos, raffles, games, prizes, etc.
Special Olympics
Students will be bringing home information about joining Special Olympics. Many of our students have asked about it and would like to join. Through this program students are active, develop lifelong skills and friendships. There is no age limit, they can participate as long as they are able! Please consider this program and if you have any questions, please contact Ms. Hanan AbuHmaid – her number is on the information that will be coming home!

November Curriculum
This month, our curriculum includes lessons about alcohol, tobacco and drug use. The focus is on what happens to your body when you get too much of those substances, legal age limits, how to avoid peer pressure, etc. It in no way endorses the use of any of those substances. We feel this is an important part of the curriculum for this age group and better discussed than ignored. If you would like to see a copy of any of the lessons, or if you have any concerns, please feel free to contact us at any time.
Updates
I’ve been told that the blog has been fixed so lets try this out!
NEW! We will begin working on restaurant skill next week. On Tuesday November 18, and Tuesday November 25, we will be going to Leo’s Coney Island. Menus will be going home this week with the day your son/daughter has been assigned to. Students will go out on one out of the two days, not both. From here on out, we will be going out approximately once a month to practice these skills.
We will also begin going to Henry Ford Centennial Library this month, and will attend about once a month. The goal will be for students to obtain their own library card, and check out materials of interest to them. This is a good time to learn about leisure skills and teach responsibility; as they will be responsible for the materials they check out.
