Weekend Movie Update

The weekend movie will be Hotel Transylvania 2 at Fairlane AMC 21 at 3 p.m.   Please meet me by the ticket counter at 2:15 p.m. sharp.    We will purchase our tickets together, then get any snacks the students may want and head to the theater.  Please remember, a parent or person responsible must stay with the student until you have made contact with me.  We will not be responsible for anyone dropped off and left unattended.  Students must have a 75% attendance rate to attend this activity, which means no more than 6 unexcused absences by Friday October 16, 2015

The price of the tickets are 7.99.  If the students want snacks I would send at least another $10 with them, but this is optional.  I will help them order and stay within their budget.

Students will be bringing home an assignment to be completed and turned in on Monday, October 19th.

I will also have the classroom cell phone with me – so if you have any questions or concerns that day, please feel free to call or text the cell phone 313-701-7985

Looking forward to a great time!

Friday News

This week brought lots of excitement as we began both work sites and CBI sites.  The students are so excited and eager!  We will be working out the kinks in the schedule over the next few weeks, but for the most part, we are good to go!   Students may come home tired, as they did at the beginning of the year, while they adjust to their new schedule and activities.  This is normal and to be expected.   If you need to know where they will be on a particular day, their schedule is in their planners for the entire month of October.

Coming up on October 26th, STEP will be hosting an Open House from 10-2 to honor National Disability Employment Awareness Month.  You will be able to:

  • Take a tour of the resource center
  • Learn more about Employment Services through STEP
  • Speak with a Michigan Rehabilitation Counselor
  • Pizza will be served from 11:30-12:30
  • If you plan on attending, please let me know so I can R.S.V.P. to them directly.

Please remember to “Like” Dearborn Transition Program on Facebook.  You will find information about upcoming events as well as photos of the student’s as they participate in all of the different activities in the program.  Planet Fitness pictures are up today!

Have a great weekend!

Work Site and CBI Update

There were some adjustments needed to be made to our  transportation schedule, so we were not able to go out today as planned.  Students who came to school ready for Planet Fitness(thank you!) were able to work out here at Hype this morning.   We will begin all job sites and CBI sites this Thursday.  Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Thursday Fairlane Mall Group B (Bring $10 for lunch) – Andrew, Ali S., Fowzi

All Planet Fitness Members will attend Planet Fitness this Friday.

Reminder – Wednesday is a late start.

Work Sites and CBI Sites Begin Monday

We had a blast at the DIA today!  Next week we get down to business.  Work sites and CBI sites will begin Monday, October 5th.  CBI sites are already in student planners.    Please take a minute to look through your son/daughters planner to see if they will be in the community next week.  Some students left their planners at home last night, it is their responsibility to bring the planners back and forth to school EVERY DAY.  This is how we will communicate with you as to where your son or daughter will be going throughout the week.

Students scheduled to go to Target on Tuesday – we will take a few dollars from their student bank account to purchase a snack or small item.  If they do not have a bank account set up yet – now is the time to get that started.  (Please see previous post)

Students scheduled to go to Fairlane Mall on Thursday – we will be purchasing lunch in the food court.  Students should bring approximately $10 from HOME for this.   This is not part of the “bank account” activities.  It works out so that students eat at the mall approximately 1x a month – this should not be a costly endeavor at all.

Students scheduled to go the Library should bring a Michigan ID if they don’t already have a library card.  Part of the activity will be obtaining their own library card.  Students are able to check out books, movies and music!

Planet Fitness – M/W/F  (This is not in planners, everyone who has a membership will be going to Planet Fitness this week)

Please remember to bring:

  • Gym Bag
  • Gym Clothes
  • Deodorant
  • Shower soap/shampoo
  • Brush/Comb
  • Lock with KEY (No combination locks)
  • Planet Fitness membership card
  • Bottled water (optional)

(*Note:  This is not a safe activity for all students, if your student has not gone with us previously, or you  have not received paperwork from me, your son/daughter will not be participating in this activity)

Looking forward to getting things rolling next week!  Have a great weekend!

Upcoming Events

Scheduled activities for this month include:

  • Friday October 2 – DIA Field Trip.  The bus will leave Hype around 9:30 and we will return approximately 2:15 p.m.   Students need to bring a bagged lunch.
  • Friday Oct 2 – Yogurtown (Mich Ave) Fundraiser for our class!  Please help support our classroom!
  • Monday October 5th – Job Sites and CBI sites begin.
  • Wednesday October 7th – Late Start
  • Saturday October 17th – Movies at Fairlane – Details to follow
  • Friday October 30th – Bowling at Ford Lanes
  • SHEET FUNDRAISER – COMING SOON!

Reminders:

  • Please don’t forget to send in money for student bank accounts.  CBI Trips start next week!
  • Every student was required to bring in a planner for the year.  Several (six) students have not brought theirs in yet.  This is essential for our classroom routine.  Students who have not brought their planner in have been given a planner through 2015 and will be charged $2.  Those students will still need to bring a planner to school by January, or they will be charged another $2 for a 2016 planner.
  • Please remember the dress code for work sites:  long pants, closed toed shoes, etc.  The students will have their assigned job sites in their planner.

Emergency Cards

Hello!

Today your son or daughter will be bringing home a district emergency card.  Please fill that out and return to us on Monday, September 28th.  Please be sure to add your email address.  While we have email addresses entered in the blog, we don’t always know who they belong to if your last name isn’t part of your email address.

We have been working on the student’s transition assessments, and because of the email address issue mentioned above, have not been able to email you your link to complete your portion.  When we return from the break we should have everyone’s email address and can either send it right away, or we may send home paper copies to everyone so that we can complete this project.

As a reminder – there will be no school Wednesday Sept 23- Friday Sept 25th.

Transition Assessments

Hello!

This week, we will be completing transition assessments on each student.  Each assessment has three component:  a professional component (that’s us), a family component (that’s you), and a student component.  Please check your email for a link to access your son/daughters assessment sometime this week.  If you prefer a printed copy, please let us know.  We are asking that the assessments be completed within one week of receiving the link.   If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  The results of the assessment will be addressed at the students’ IEP.

Thank you!

Friday News…

The first week of school has been great!  It will be another week or so before we begin job sites and CBI sites, but we have been having a good time getting to know each other, and settling into a classroom routine.  We have several new staff members this year.  Returning are Ms. Mona Haidar, and Ms. Sue Brickey.  We’d like to welcome Ms. Cathy Yancura, Ms. Laurie Lambert, and Ms. Nehmat Dakroub.  They have been excellent additions to our program and we are excited to have them here!

We have several announcements and reminders we’d like you to be aware of:

  • Please call to make an appointment with us if you need to speak with us personally.  Often times we are out of the building and we would not want you to show up and not be able to speak to us.  Also, arrival and dismissal times are not ideal for meetings.  Our students need our undivided attention during this time.  Thank you for your consideration.

  • There are about 6 students who do not have their planners yet.  We use these every day and we will be keeping track of job sites, CBI sites, field trips, etc.  It is important for every student to have one so that they can complete the activities in the class.

  • Please inform us of any allergies or medical concerns we may not be aware of.  The nurse is working on the medical information as we speak, but if there is anything we should know – please just drop us a line or give us a call.  We are aware of the larger issues, but may not know of all the allergies or the extent of those allergies.

  • Bank accounts – we are ready to start setting up student bank accounts.  The money will be used for our CBI trips.  The money will be locked up, and will be in their own individual accounts.  We recommend sending $20-40 to start, preferably in singles;  this should last us until the winter break.  (This does not include larger trips such as bowling, dining out, etc.)  Students spend between $3-$5 at a time, and when they return to school, the activity is to balance their account.  You can begin sending money in next week.  We’d like to have everything set up by the time we are ready to start going out into the community.

  • Marathon Walkers!  We have a fitness hour every day after lunch.  Currently the students are working on walking a marathon.  A marathon is 26.2 miles, which is 210 laps around the track!  We will have a celebration when we get there!!  They are very motivated and excited about this!

  • Lunches – it’s great to see all the healthy lunches the students are bringing in!  As we go forward, please encourage your son/daughter to make their own lunch or to contribute.

  • Save the Date!  I am working on a new project that will provide activities for our students to participate during after school hours.  Not every activity will be suitable for every student, but every student will have activities to attend over the course of the school year.  The first activity is scheduled for  Saturday Oct 17th, late afternoon or early evening.   We will be going to see the Goosebumps movie.  It’s scheduled release date is the October 16th, so as we move close to the date,  I will have more details and the requirements for students to attend.

That’s it for now!  Have a great weekend!

HYPE Fit for Special Needs

Hype is offering a FREE recreation fitness class for students this fall.  The class will be on Friday’s from Sept 11-November 20th, between 6-7 p.m.  Students will be bringing home a catalog and the class description  is on page 20.  You’ll notice the picture of some of our stars!  🙂  Pre registration is required.
