Tigers Game and Backpacks

Students are going to leave their backpacks at Hype overnight.  They cannot bring them into the ballpark and we’re not sure if they will be getting on the same bus for our return trip, so they will leave them here and pick them up tomorrow.  Next year we will try to remember to tell students to leave them at home!

Tiger’s Game Reminders

A few reminders about the Tiger’s Game tomorrow:

  1. Anyone not attending the Tiger’s Game tomorrow has the day off.  We do not have any staff members staying back at Hype.  Anyone who “accidentally” shows up will be sent home.
  2. For those attending the game, pick up time is 4:30 at Edsel Ford High School 20601 Rotunda Drive, Dearborn, MI
  3. Students will eat their normal lunch before attending the game, they also have the option of purchasing a snack at the stadium.  Prices are very expensive, ( I believe a bottle of water is $4)  so depending on what your son/daughter likes, I would send between $10-$20.
  4. PLEASE be on time for pick up.

Thank you!

Just a few reminders…

1.  Please put your student’s name on the Detroit Tigers RSVP.  I didn’t realize until this morning (when I found a pile of them on my desk), that I forgot to put a spot for names.  Thank you!

2.   There IS a weekend activity in June!  Mrs. Haidar has invited us over to her home for a summer kick off BBQ.  Mrs. Haidar lives in the Dearborn/Dearborn Heights area.  Right now, we just need an idea of who will be attending so that we can plan for food.  RSVP’s will be coming home this afternoon

3.  Tiger’s Game Reminder – anyone NOT attending the game will need to stay home that day as there will be no one here at Hype, job/community sites will be cancelled, etc.  (Busing is also cancelled for the ride home.)

Upcoming Dates:

May 25 – Tiger’s Game

May 27-30 –  No school – Memorial Day Weekend

June 3 – Benihana’s (Dress up!)

June 4 – BBQ at Mrs. Haidar’s

June 7 – Field Day

June 8 – Greenfield Village

June 13 – Bowling/Pizza Party (SMART Bus activity – weather permitting)

June 15 – Last day of school for those not attending Turtle Cove

June 16 – Turtle Cove/Last Day of School

May 13, 2016

Hello,

Just a few notes this Friday…

1.  Reduced Bus Fare ID’s – Earlier this week we sent home forms so that students can receive reduced bus fare when we use the SMART Bus.  This is optional.  Students who do not have the reduced fare will still ride the bus with us, they will just pay the regular fare of $1.00 each way.   We do plan on using the bus approximately once a month next year.

2.  Please look for the flyer regarding the next Parent Information Meeting on “Transitioning to Adulthood”.  The flyer will be sent home with students today.  This will be a very informative meeting for those that wish to learn about Community Mental Health (CMH), Social Security, Medicaid, etc. for persons with disabilities.

3.  The weekend activity scheduled for May 21st has been cancelled.  We have 7 activities coming up within the last 20 days of school and so at this time, we feel adding another would just be overwhelming.

4.  We just got news that Dr. Tynan has purchased Tiger’s Tickets for us on May 25th.  We will send more details home next week, but that usually means an extended day.  Please plan on picking your student up from school (may not be Hype) between 4-5 p.m. that day.  We are so excited and thankful for this opportunity!

Correction on Reduced Fare ID’s

Hello!

In the last post I asked that the reduced fare ID applications be returned to us by May 20th.    I must have been on auto pilot when writing that,  as most things do need to be returned to us, however, please just  mail it from home.  (I have one completed application right now that I will stick in the mail!)   Sorry for any inconvenience!

Reduced Fair ID

Hello!  Today we will be sending home an application for the reduced fair ID to ride the SMART Bus system.  This will allow students to ride the SMART bus for .50 each way instead of $1.00 each way.  We are looking to utilize public transportation more in the 2016-2017 school year, however, we do have a trip planned in June of this year.   Please return the application by Friday, May 20th.  Please feel free to contact us with any questions.  Thank you!

Save the Date(s)!

Hello!

Reservations have been made for our group at Turtle Cove on June 16th.  I will send details home, as well as an order form for tickets,  in a few weeks.  There will be no bus pick up that day because we will meet right at the park.  Please remember, for safety purposes, students must have an adult chaperone in order to attend.  Students who are not able to attend will be excused for the day, and their last day of school will be June 15, 2016.

Also, we will be celebrating the end of the year, and honoring the students exiting our program on Friday,  June 3, at Benihana’s.  There will be no cost to the students.   We encourage students to dress up for this event:  dresses, skirts, dress pants, etc.  It is always a great time – the students love it!  Students must be in good standing with the class in order to attend.  (Behavior, attendance, all work assignments completed, etc.)

Other Important Dates:

May 11th – Late start

May 12th – DIA

May 27th – No School

May 30th – No School

June 8th – Greenfield Village

June 13th – Bowling (Tentaive)

** Please note, we will continue to go to work sites,  as scheduled,  through June 10th.

Thursday April 28, 2016

Just a few reminders for the week…

Dress Code:  Please remember students must wear long pants and closed toe shoes for all job sites!  The weather is getting nicer, but shorts, capris, sandals are not allowed at any of our job sites.  Students can bring clothes to change into after their job site is completed  if they wish.  It can get pretty warm here at Hype and we do want students to be comfortable.  So please come dressed for work and change afterwards if you would like.

Planet Fitness:  Students must bring a change of clothes when going to Planet Fitness.  They cannot wear the clothes they worked out in all day long.  Students are working out hard enough to get sweaty, they cannot wear sweaty, stinky,  clothes when going back to school and/or to work sites.

Next week we will start our Self Defense Class – parents welcome!  Just let me know if you plan to attend so I can reserve the appropriate space.  (May 3, 5 and 10)  Watch our Facebook page for pictures!

Good Luck to our athletes headed to Spring Games next Friday,  May 6th!!!  We will be cheering for you!

Fun Fact:  There are only 33 school days left until Summer Break!!!!!  (but who’s counting?)  🙂

Monday, April 25, 2016

Hello!

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Parent Orientation on Friday.  We had a good turn out, and hope that we gave enough information about our class without being too overwhelming!

This past Saturday we saw the Jungle Book for our 7th Weekend Activity.  It was a fun time!  Next year, we will move our movie location from Fairlane to the new theater at Southland Mall – I’ve heard it’s awesome!  🙂  We have two more activities to go before the end of the year.  In May we will try to go play miniature golf (weather permitting), and in June we will be having a family day at Turtle Cove.

I’m so excited to announce that we will be offering a Self Defense for Students with Disabilities class again this year.  Mr. Tank will be here May 3, 5 and 10th, from 9:00-10:30 a.m. to provide this training for our students.  Mr. Tank is a friend of mine from high school, and has owned several karate schools. He has been involved with karate for over 30 years.   He loves working with our students and is volunteering his time to do this.  He is truly wonderful with our students, and the students adore him.  This year, we are opening this opportunity up to parents as well.  If you would like to attend, you are more than welcome to come on one or all three days. Please just confirm with me that you will be attending so I can make sure we have enough space.

Please note:  Due to unforeseen circumstances, the bowling activity scheduled for April 29th is cancelled.

Reminder:  Students who bring electronics to school are welcome to do so, however, please remember we share this classroom with an afterschool tutoring class every night and other programs during the weekend.  We cannot be responsible for lost/stolen items.  Students are encouraged to keep these belongings in their back packs when they are not in use.  If they are left on a desk over night, they might end up missing.

Sick Policy

Recently, we’ve had a few students coming to school sick, returning to school still sick, or students who have not been picked up from school when they are sick.  (When I say sick, I mean the student has a fever, is throwing up, or has diarrhea.)  I cannot stress enough, the importance of keeping your son/daughter home when sick, or picking them up when called, as the first means of preventing the spread of illness.  Our “sick policy” is being sent home to make sure everyone has read it and understands what is expected.  Please sign and return by Friday, April 15th.

Sick Policy

  1.  Please keep students home if they have any of the following symptoms:  fever, throwing up, diarrhea, sore throat, sinus/upper respiratory infection that the student cannot control or take care of on their own
  2. If a student develops symptoms while at school, the student will be expected to be picked up from school as soon as possible.  If you are unable to pick your son/daughter up from school, we will begin contacting the emergency contacts you provided at the beginning of the year
  3. If a student is picked up from school due to fever, vomiting and/or diarrhea, they may not return the next day.  Students must be free of symptoms for 24 hours before they can return to school
  4. Please respect the other students, teachers and their families by not sending sick students to school

If you find you have a student who “insists” on coming to school, put the “E” in the window and the bus will not stop.  You might have to do it when they aren’t paying attention, but the disappointment of one student is better than getting 5 other students sick.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
