Well, the first week of school is under our belts.  For the most part, it went smoothly!  Everyone is doing a great job bringing in their own healthy lunch.  We have been working with the students on how to make their lunches healthier, and next week, we will start a healthy lunch program!  I’m still hashing out the details, but we will be ready to start on Monday!  There will be prizes each month!  We also took the students weight today, I’m anxious to see how the numbers change as we continue with fitness and healthy eating.  As a reminder, soda/pop is not allowed at Hype.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Don’t forget, there is no school Monday!  We will see everyone next Tuesday.  Enjoy the weekend!

First Day Back!

Everyone is adjusting to being back at school!  We had a nice, easy day getting to know everyone,  with  just a taste of our routine.  Tomorrow we will go a little more in depth as we begin discussing our rules, expectations and getting into our curriculum.  Job/CBI sites will not start until the end of September at the earliest.

Thank you to those students who came prepared with all of their supplies.  There were quite a few who did not have them, and so I am sending a reminder home today. It is so important students have the tools they need for school, and especially their planner, which is a line of communication between school and home.   Some students have last years planner in their back pack – they will need a new academic planner for this year.  (July 2016 – June 2017).   Please send supplies to school by Friday, September 9th.

As a reminder, we do not send paper notes home.  Student planners and this blog are our main lines of communication to what is happening in the classroom such as special events, where your son/daughter will be working, field trips, etc.  We update the planners on a monthly basis, but please check them on a daily basis for any changes in the schedule.

Also, I understand there were a few bus issues this morning.  Please understand it takes a few days to work the kinks out – but they usually resolve themselves.  It looks like we have all new drivers this year, so it will take a few weeks for them to become familiar with the route.  If you have questions or concerns, please call the  transportation department.  You can also call them to get your son/daughters pick up time, as it may have changed from last year.

Thank you!

Dear Students and Families,

It’s almost time to say “Welcome Back!”  We hope you have had a great summer.  It was one of the best summers I can remember, with lots of sunshine and hot weather;  it’s how I remember summers as a kid!  Take time to enjoy it before you have to set that alarm clock again!

Just a few reminders before school starts again:

  • Make sure you have your monthly academic year planner (July 2016-June 2017) when you return to school.  They are available now at Target, Meijers, Walmart, etc.   The 8×11 size is best!
  • Make sure to bring a cold lunch every day beginning September 7th – unfortunately we cannot heat lunches in the microwave
  • Students who do not ride the bus should be dropped off at 8 a.m., and picked up by 2:45 p.m.
  • Please be sure to walk your son/daughter to the classroom if they will be coming in late, and call if you will be picking them up early
  • Finally, PLEASE make an appointment if you need to meet with us.  We are happy to met with you and we want to work together.  We can arrange our schedules to accommodate most requests, but unannounced visits take time away from the students and our other responsibilities.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone’s smiling faces in a few weeks, but until then, make sure you enjoy what’s left of summer.  Oh and remember, shorts and t-shirts are fine until we start work groups, which will probably be late September.  See you soon!

Have a Great Summer!

It’s time to say goodbye for the summer, and welcome the new families that will be joining us next year!  This has been the fastest year I’ve had in 18 years of teaching, and also my favorite.  All of the students are such a joy, they make us smile every day!  We wish you the happiest and safest of summers, and we look forward to seeing you next year.  For those of you who will be joining us next year, we look forward to getting to you know you and working with you.  See you in the fall!

End of the Year and Turtle Cove Information

Tomorrow is our last full day of the school year!  We know everyone is excited for the break and ready to enjoy the summer!  If you are not attending the Turtle Cove activity on June 16th, tomorrow will be the last day of school.  Congratulations to our students who are moving on to Project Search or other programs…we will miss you!

Turtle Cove Info:

We have been watching the weather and currently they are calling for thunderstorms.  We are hoping this changes, but if not, Ali has invited us to swim at Western Wayne Hype.  We will let you know by the end of the day tomorrow, with all the details of either location.

Also, we will be sending a packet of information home for you to look at over the summer and keep for your reference.  This is information we handed out at our new parent orientation, but we thought it would be nice for everyone to have it so that our policies, rules, expectations are clear to everyone.  Please take some time to glance through it when you get a chance.

Greenfield Village Tomorrow!

Our Greenfield Village Trip is tomorrow!  Please remember:

  • All students must bring a bagged lunch
  • Dress for the weather, currently it’s supposed to be 58-65 degrees and sunny during the time we are there
  • Sunscreen
  • Tennis shoes

Also, we have had a tentative bowling and pizza party penciled in on Monday the 13th and we have decided that we are not going to participate in that.  It is Ramadan and many of our students are fasting;   and to be honest, the pizza is half the fun of being there.  We will have plenty of trips next year when all students can enjoy it!  We will follow our regular schedule for Monday the 13th – STEP, Planet Fitness, etc.  That being said, the 13th will be our last day of work and/or CBI for the year.

7 more days of school!  🙂

Field Day Tomorrow!

Just a reminder that Field Day is tomorrow!  Lunch will be provided (halal hot dog, chips, drink).  Please wear tennis shoes and dress for the weather.

Also, don’t forget to turn in Turtle Cove slips by Friday.  Even if your son/daughter is not attending, please return and indicate that he/she is not going.

Thank you!

Hello!

The days are winding down but we are not slowing down one bit!  Busy days ahead and that makes for a quick end of the year.

Mrs. Haidar has decided to cancel the BBQ for Saturday.  We’ve been watching the weather all week and it just keeps bouncing around from 10% chance of rain to 50%, there’s just no way to predict what will happen and she does not have room for us on the inside.  Sorry for any inconvenience and disappointment this may cause.

Susie was the first one to bring in a planner for next year!  YAY Susie!!  It’s a nice one too so if you’re wondering where to buy one you might want to check with the Grandas family.

Walking Club Winners:

April – Sabrina Abuhmaid

May – Tori Gontarski

Congratulations Girls!  We will have special prizes for June.  Stay tuned!

Next Week:

June 7 – Field Day

June 8 – Greenfield Village

June 10 – NO Planet Fitness – they are installing new equipment.

Please note:  We will continue to go to the library but we will no longer check items out as we approach the end of the year.  Checkouts will resume in the fall.

9 more days of school!

Hello!

We had a little mishap with the bus to Kerby’s this morning.  It left without us!  We improvised by purchasing breakfast pizza for the students and they all seemed happy and had plenty to eat.  We even had extra for those students who didn’t bring a lunch.  The cost for the pizza was just $5 per student.  We took the $5 out of their bank accounts if we couldn’t make change, so please check your son/daughter’s back pack for change.  Some of them will be coming home with the same amount of money they came in with.

Information will be going home today for our trip to Turtle Cove!  We are so excited!  Please save the top page for your reference and send in the form with your number of tickets, purchase price (please include the exact amount) by June 10th.  If your son/daughter is not attending, please indicate that on the form and return to us.

Saturday is our BBQ at Mrs. Haidar’s house.  We will be watching the weather carefully as it changes by the hour.  We will cancel by Friday if the weather doesn’t cooperate as Ms. Haidar cannot accommodate everyone inside her home.  Keep your fingers crossed!

Academic Planners!  I’ve already got mine for next year!!!  They are starting to come out and every student is required to have one by the start of next year.  We will not have any for sale as we have in the past.  Please make sure the squares are large enough for students to write job sites, community locations, etc.  Sometimes they need to write more than one thing in a square.  A good size planner  is 8 1/2 x 11.

Money left over from student bank accounts will be sent home the last week of school

That’s it for now.  Please be sure to check back on Friday.  We will post whether the BBQ is on or cancelled by 3 p.m.

12 more days of school!!  🙂

May 26th, 2016

Hello!  We hope you have a wonderful loooong weekend with your families.  The year is wrapping up quickly and summer will be here in just a few weeks.  Only 13 school days left!

ALL students will be going to Kerby’s the Tuesday we return to school.   So please send $10-$15 on Tuesday.  We usually walk to 5 Below after our breakfast, so a little extra spending money is nice, but optional.

Dress Code:  We will be keeping track of dress code from now until the end of the year.  Many students are coming to school not dressed properly for work and they have to stay back.  We cannot effectively run our program this way.  Students may bring shorts or capris to change into once they get back, but anyone going to a job site must wear long pants and closed toed shoes.   Students who do not dress for work will not be able to attend the special activities coming up.  If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact us.

Upcoming Dates:

May 31 – Kerby’s ($10-!5)

June 3 – Benihana’s (Free)

June 4 – BBQ at Ms. Haidar’s (Free)

June 7 – Field Day (Free, lunch provided)

June 8 – Greenfield Village (Free, bring a bagged lunch)

June 13 – Bowling (weather permitting as we will be walking to the bus stop) ($12)

June 16 – Turtle Cove Family Day/Last Day of School ($6 per person)

Have a great weekend!
