Today the kids cut and added apples, sugar, cinnamon to a crock pot and made homemade apple sauce! They got to eat their results!

Tomorrow, October 16, 2019 is late start. Kids begin school at 9:35!

Dear Parents and Families,
I am sending your child’s reading bag home this weekend. Inside is their Zippy bag with the letter books and paper books we are working on. This is practice for when I send home real books and start reading groups in the next few weeks. Please remind them to read the books inside and practice reading. They are to bring their bags home every night and bring them back everyday. They are reading the same books, this makes a difference as this helps them develop fluency with common sight words and have success while reading. My goal is not just to teach your child to read, my goal is to have you child LOVE to read and be a life longer reader!

Wow! It was wonderful seeing you at open house! I hope you had time to look around the room and see all of your child’s special area teachers.

If you were unable to attend, please email me (or contact me on Dojo) so that I can schedule your child’s conference in November.

We are working on Letters and sounds in Language Arts. We have begun our reading of letter books, identifying the sounds that the letters make and what begins with those sounds. We are working on adding details to our pictures, this helps us when we begin writing with known words. We are also learning how we respond to stories read to us and how to share our opinions.

We are working on counting in Math. We are working on counting up and back, using story problems to create math pictures using drawings as well as manipulatives.

We are working in Social Studies on Rules, why we need them and where we have them.

In Science we are working on the 5 senses. We will focus on sight, sound and touch this week and finish off with taste and smell next week.

I will be adding more pictures of our learning soon, so stay posted 🙂

Tomorrow is our Open House! Come sign up for conferences, meet all your child’s teachers and see your child’s/children’s classrooms.
Open house is between 6-7:30!

Dear Parents and Families,

This will be your child’s first full week of school meaning they will come in at 8:30 and leave at 3:30. Please provide them with 1 or 2 healthy snacks and a water bottle. This will be another adjustment period. Your child will come home very tired from a busy long day of learning.

Our Special Schedule is:
Monday: Science and Art Tuesday: Gym Wednesday: Gym Thursday: Music Friday: Music

If your child is a bus rider, they will get off the bus and go to breakfast which will be open from 8 am to 8:30 am. If your child is a walker, they can go straight to breakfast before lining up for class at the same times listed above.

Your child needs a crayon box, I will put their name on it. They may also need a sweater in case it gets cold in the room they can keep it in their locker.

Dear Parents and Families,

Welcome to Kindergarten and Mrs. Burks’ class! I am so excited to have you in my room! This is going to be a fantastic year!

This week is soft start and the day looks different than it will next week. On Monday, you will take your child in the Main Cafeteria at 8:50 and sign up for an appointment on Tuesday-Thursday for testing. You will come back to the same spot at 11:30 to take your child home.

Tuesday through Thursday, you will bring your child at their appointment time and/or drop your child off at the front door at 12:00. They will ride the bus home or be picked up by 3:30 in front of the school by the big trees.

This week you will get information to sign up for this weekly blog as well as be assigned a login for Class Dojo. If you would like to contact me, feel free to do so at any time at burksg@dearbornschools.org.

I look forward to seeing all of you at testing and again at Open House September 12 6-7:30.

There will also be a meeting Tuesday at 5 to meet the new principal and hear new information about events happening in our district.
