Monday’s Stories for Remote Spirit Week:

Patricia Polacco Reads Thunder Cakes – YouTube
https://www.youtube.com › watch

Cookadoodledoo – YouTube
https://www.youtube.com › watch

These are two stories that I’ve always enjoyed reading to all my second grade classes. I posted Cook-a-Doodle -Do last week in our calendar, but knowing that it went with Monday’s theme of cooking at home, I thought everyone would once again enjoy the craziness in Rooster’s kitchen.

Thundercakes is just a great story. You may have heard all the crashes of thunder the other night. The author Patricia Polacco, tells the story of how her grandmother helped her conquer her fear of thunderstorms while preparing a special recipe together.

Both stories have a recipe at the end of the book that you can read and maybe make.

Have fun with reading, listening and cooking!!!!!

The Hive’s 3rd Week

Hello Families!

I was able to go for a long walk in my neighborhood. It sure felt good being outside in the fresh air. I hope you were also able to spend some time outside enjoying this sunny, but very windy day. Sure had to hang onto hats!

Here we are about to begin our 3rd week of our remote learning and I hope as we move forward, you are feeling a bit more at ease with our learning schedule. Some feedback I’ve received is still being overwhelmed and others would like more assignments. Which ever side of the fence you are on, everyone is doing their best with what works for their family.

If needed , please reference March 13th and March 17th for additional links for extended enrichment. Also, our special teachers have links that I posted in my past blogs.

Everyday: Reading—Student choice (can be Raz Kids or Epic), also completing Read Works (see titles below), Math—homework book, Zearn, Writing, Science—Mystery Science

Hive Plans for this week:

Spelling: (hard c=k, soft c=s, hard g=g, soft g=j)

came, city, cents, gym, gone, girl, page, wagon, center, camp and bonus are: citizen, gift and century. Our silly sentence is : The little girl had a huge wagon filled with gifts for good citizens.

Monday: Print each word and highlight the vowel after each word. What do you notice about the hard c/soft c and the hard g/soft g? Hint: pay close attention to the vowels.

Tuesday: Print each word in bubble letters– print some tiny and some HUGE Remember to include your sentence.

Wednesday: (April Fool’s Day) Print your words upside down or backwards—It will be tricky. Yes, your sentence, too. Send me a pic!

Thursday: Let’s do alphabetical order—-please print them—I want to see all letters printed correctly—especially all those underground letters!

Friday: Spelling Test —Thank you for pictures—-or have mom/dad correct it or an older sibling. 🙂

Reading: (Due Friday—Please send to me—remember to do spell check:)

Choose one of your fiction books that you enjoyed reading and work on the following elements of fiction: (Be sure to include the title)

Characters: list at least 3 character and describe each one with at least 2 character traits. Remember to use evidence from your book.

Setting: Where and when did the story take place?

Events: List at least 4-6 main events in complete sentences (use transition words: first, next, then, after that, finally)

Problem: State the problem in a complete sentence or two

Solution: How was the problem solved?

An illustration of your favorite scene would be great!!!

Also: Read Works: Design: 2 articles: The Paper Airplane and The Perfect Sandcastle—along with answering ALL questions. 🙂

Writing; We are going to hold off on the opinion paper, but I would like you to write me a letter telling me about a favorite book that you’ve read. (fiction or non-fiction) Let me know why you chose this book. Use details and examples from your book. Can’t wait to hear about what you are reading.

Math: Module 6, Lesson 14-18 (one a day) in math homework book and on Zearn. Keep practicing problems from Module 5 (+ and-)

Science: Reminder that Mystery Science is FREE and you need to sign up for it using your email. It doesn’t work through mine. You will receive your own password. I’d like you to explore the following: Could You Build A House Out of Paper? A building activity follows the lesson.

Social Studies: There are 2 books in EPIC (What Do We Buy? A Look At Goods and Services and What Is Money, Anyway?) that you can read or listen to involving economics. These are for review, you should recognize many vocabulary words that we used during our lessons on economics. 🙂

Last but not least, It’s Remote Spirit Week!!!!! (refer to previous blog posting)

Monday: Picture of your “little chef” helping in the kitchen .

I would love to see pictures–if you would like me to post some on my blog, I need you to send me permission, otherwise they will only be seen by me. This is totally up to you.

As always, please don’t hesitate to email me about any questions you may have. Work at your pace!!!!!!!

I want to thank Mrs. Varacalli for helping me set up our first class Zoom meeting. We may have another one toward the end of the week. Keep your eyes on my blog. Thanks!

Here’s a huge hug for you and your little ones! Keep up the great work!!!!!

Love,

Week 2—:)

Hello Parents!

Please give yourselves a pat on the back for assisting your children through a very uncharted week of remote learning. We all made it and will continue with success. Many of your children have shown me that they are completing work at home, Zearn, Raz Kids, Readworks, reports sent and others. Great job!!!! If you are having difficulty with locating my calendar, it was posted on March 17th (Our Hive Plans). Be sure to scroll down until you see Week 1 (if needed) and Week 2. I have not completed Week 3 as of tonight. Also, you may want to reference March 13th-Online Learning for additional site information.

Hive Plans : (you may still need to refer to March 17th posts for more details)

Reading: Readworks Insect/plants ( read and answer questions), spend additional reading time choosing from Raz Kids or Epic and then they should be reading a book of their choice for at least 20 minutes.

Math: Complete a page a day in their math homework book. Another 20 minutes should be spent on Zearn, Module 6. Also, practicing addition and subtractions (3 digit number, especially with the “tricky” zero) problems 3 of each and or on Zearn Module 5. Also, number families—flashcards. Keep improving every day.

Writing: Continue with the research paper. Please view the videos that I posted on calendar for Week one or they can be found on the Epic site under writing. Short and helpful. If your child has turned in their report to me, they can write in their journal.

Science: Mysteryscience. com

Social Studies: Public Issues/ I sent a blog out about making a sign to thank our community workers for all the time and efforts they are putting forth during this terrible time. Please send me a picture, I will try to post them with your permission.:)

Spelling: Homophones (words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and have different meanings): wear, where, through, threw, write, right, whole, whole, board, bored. Bonus words: there, their, they’re and the silly sentence is: The children were bored as they went through right door, wearing blue. Additional practice ideas are on the calendar. Check the calendar for a link to one of my favorite books Cook-a -Doodle-Do.

Lalilo and Spelling City are not being used at this time. I apologize for the confusion.

Please don’t hesitate to ask, if you have any questions.

Again, thank you for all the support and you’re doing a remarkable job!!!

Staying positive!

Fondly,

Mrs. Burke

My Lion Puzzle—-RRRR

Hello Kiddo Diddos!

I wanted to share a picture of my lion puzzle that I completed while staying at home. It was really hard, but I stuck with it and was so happy when I connected the last piece to complete his face. Doesn’t he have a magnificent face? If you would like to share any pictures of you building a lego structure, a painting you’ve painted, a picture you’ve drawn, shooting hoops in the backyard, cooking or baking in the kitchen, please send them to me. I would love to see them. oxoxoxo 🙂

I want all of you that are completing work on Zearn (wow, 15 of our mathematicians—Tyler, Sam, Alexander, Alex, Sarah, James, Bryson, Jenna, Britta, David, Maliya, Malynn, Griffin, Marco and Noor.) to know that I’m sending a gold star your way!!!!!! I know more of you will be working on Module 6 this upcoming school week. Making arrays are fun. If we were at school I was going to have each of you make one out of mini marshmallows. Maybe you could create an array with something you have at home. 🙂

Great job reading!!!! Remember to use Read Works. Tell your parents that I will send out a blog for them for more ideas for this week.

Please know that I’m thinking about all of you all the time and am so proud of all the work you are doing —–Keeping your brains happy, makes you and me happy!!!

Try to get some fresh air in your backyards—-the rain is coming, maybe even a little snow! Yikes.

“Bee” the best helpers in your family!!!

Love,

Mrs. Burke
