Busy Bees

Dearborn Public Schools

Oct. 8th – Oct. 12th

Hi There!

Last Call for ordering Scholastic Books. I accidentally left some ordering materials at school, so I won’t be able to place the order until Monday afternoon.

We’re staying busy in Hive 108.

Here are this week’s plans:

Spelling:  Long and short u—-cut, cute, jump, nut, bump, tube, cub, cube, rude, use and our bonus words are: must, glue and tissue. Our sentence is:  The cute cub was rude when he cut the nut in two.

Writer’s Workshop:  We are finishing up our “Boo-Boo” stories.  Some students have already shared their story with our class.  These stories should be up on our bulletin board soon, Bandaids included!  Ouch!

Reading: To strengthen our comprehension skills we will be working on asking and answering who?, what?, where?, when? and how? within our assigned reading.

Math:  More measurement, utilizing centimeters and meters. Also, incorporating length into addition and subtraction problems.

Math Homework Books (Succeed) will be coming home on Monday.  Your child will be responsible for returning the assigned homework page/pages which will be posted daily in their planners.  Please keep the book at home and utilize the parent pages as references for  your child’s homework and end of module assessments.

Social Studies:  Completion of our Community unit—Watch for your child’s red social studies folder to come home at the beginning of the week to study for our test—middle of the week. Please be sure to send them back, for we will continue to add to them.

Fun PTA Contest

DuVall Families,

The DuVall PTA is looking for some help from our little ones! We are a holding a contest for our students to submit a drawing for our new car decals. I encourage our students to use their imagination. Whether they draw a penguin, a creative letter “D” or just a simple ” DuVall Elementary”. The only rule is that they follow the Dearborn Public Schools code of conduct. No weapons or profanity please!

Drawings need to be submitted to the office by October 19th and the winner will be announced October 20th! The winner will have their drawing printed as our new car decal and will receive a free copy! Please make sure your drawing has your name and teacher’s name printed on it! Students can submit more than one drawing and this contest is open to all grades.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me!

Best of luck! 🙂

Oct. 1st – Oct. 5th

Hello!

Oh my goodness—here we are in the first week of October! Can you believe it?

Plans for our Hive:

Spelling:  (Long and short o), pop, cone, rob, robe, joke, box, bone, fox, lock and poke.  Our bonus words are:  alone, throne and produce.  Our sentence is:  The fox in the box told us a funny joke.

Reading:  We will continue to work on making connections with our books and looking for interesting words to help us expand our vocabulary.

Math:  Our tests came home from Module 1. We will continue to use these strategies in Module 2 (Measurement—Addition and Subtraction of Length), so please continue to practice these types of addition and subtraction problems at home to reinforce these processes.

Writing:  Continuation with our Personal Narratives— writing about a time we got a “Boo-Boo”. We created our story boards/sketches and have begun our first drafts.  We will work on revisions and then onto our final copies for the hallway bulletin board.

Social Studies: Concluding our first unit and I anticipate a test on Friday. Please watch your child’s planner.

Other tidbits:

* An enormous THANK YOU to Mrs. Malmsten for popping and popping on Friday.  You were awesome!!!!

*Book orders due on Tuesday, October 2nd.

*Keep those Box Tops coming—–THANK YOU!!!!

*A school wide project has just begun—Operation Christmas Stockings: For many years we have been collecting extra Halloween candy and sending it to our troops through an organization called “Boatsie’s Boxes”.  This year we are changing it up a bit.  What this means to you is that each classroom will be collecting goods that are put into individual stockings (16″-19″) to be sent overseas to service troops that are serving our country.  We will begin collecting NOW!  All items will get shipped November 5th and  students will be filling them Friday, November 2nd. If you would like to donate more, feel free and you can still send in extra Halloween candy.  You can also make a cash donation in the office to help purchase the stockings if you’d like.  Thanks in advance and we think this will make a great addition to the program we do in the spring for the veterans!  2nd grade is responsible for dried fruit and life savers.  All your donations are GREATLY appreciated!!!!!

“BEE” the reason someone smiles today!

Fondly,

Mrs. Burke

Official Start of Our Bee Hive Blog—Sept. 17th-21st

Hello Parents!

Welcome to Mrs. Burke’s second grade blog.  I want to thank all the families who attended our DuVall Open House on Thursday.  It was great meeting so many parents and showing you where your children spend so much of their weekly time.  All the busy bees are settling into our routine nicely and working well like little bees do!  We’ve already had 2 special Fridays due to working together and earning good behavior stones.

Our weekly routine in Hive 108:

Spelling: ( short vowel patterns and adding a “magic e” to make long vowels)  Our words are:  at, ate, mad, made, fin, fine, not, note, hop, hope and our bonus words are: tap, tape, slid, slide.  Our sentence is:  We can hop and then slide into the fine pool.   Just a reminder that spelling homework is using one of the ideas on the back of the children’s red folders.  Choose one per day to complete and this stays at home.  Also, we will be practicing lower case letters when working on our spelling lessons.  Work on this at home would be greatly appreciated!

Reading:  We will be  continually work on strategies for comprehension, fluency and accuracy this week adding the strategies to our CAFE board within our classroom.  These are strategies you can have your child demonstrate at home during their 10 minutes of shared reading at home each night.  Your children will also be introduced to our classroom routines for Listen to Reading and Work on Writing.

Writing:  We will be working on a personal narrative story—putting our ideas in  sequential order after brainstorming ideas and utilizing a story board to answer who?, what?, where?, when?, and how? questions .

Math:  We continue to work on addition and subtraction within one hundred using decomposing and bonding.  Homework has and will be sent home almost daily.  Please be sure these are returned to school the next day, for we correct them with partners and as a group.    We are becoming more familiar with our new Eureka Math program and children are catching on.  We are approaching the end of Module 1 and I am anticipating our first assessment on Friday.  Please watch your child’s planner for this could change.  I will be introducing the children to a math computer program for review of this Module, so again watch your child’s planner for further information.

Social Studies:  As a class we are putting together an “Our Community….Dearborn”, folder with human and natural characteristics, businesses, transportation, how our community differs from others and maps of our community.

A few extra tidbits:

*LATE START  this Wednesday, September 19th

*Continue to send in Box Tops 🙂

*Please submit your information in the office for I-Chat form completion

*Please practice tying shoes with your child.

Thank you so much for your support and if you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to inquire.

Again, welcome to Hive 108!

Fondly,

Mrs. Burke
