Operation Gratitude Halloween Give-Back

Campaign Underway Candy for a Cause  Teaching children the value of giving back by donating Halloween candy in support of Operation Gratitude is a win-win for kids and parents . This Halloween, local trick-or-treaters will join kids across the country when they donate their extra Halloween candy to Operation Gratitude at DuVall Elementary. The sweet treats will be included along with handwritten thank you letters in Care Packages sent to U.S. Service Members deployed overseas, and hand delivered to Veterans and First Responders serving in their local communities. Americans spend an estimated $2.5 billion dollars on a whopping 600 million pounds of Halloween candy each year. In 2018, more than 440,000 pounds of candy was donated to Operation Gratitude and distributed to America’s heroes in signature Operation Gratitude Care Packages and local deliveries around the country. “Operation Gratitude’s mission is to thank all who serve, forging strong bonds between grateful Americans and the Heroes who serve and protect them,” according to Kevin Schmiegel, Lieutenant Colonel, USMC (Ret.) and CEO of Operation Gratitude. “The Halloween Candy Give-Back Program provides every American child the opportunity to learn about service, sacrifice and generosity.”

We will be collecting candy in the office November 1st-4th

Some of our students have already contributed to these wonderful programs. Thank you!!!!

That should cover this upcoming week and a bit beyond!:)

Have a wonderful week!

Fondly,

Mrs. Burke

Oct. 14th – Oct. 18th

Hi Parents!

Thank you for getting your child’s permission slip and money in on time for our field trip to MJR Westland Theater. Also, a huge thank you to the parents who volunteered to drive/chaperone. I need all who volunteered! If you haven’t filled out the paperwork in the office, you must do so on Monday, for processing purposes!!! 🙂

Our Hive Plans:

Spelling: (initial patterns: sk, sl, sp, st) Our words are: skin, skip, slope, slip, slug, spell, spin, step, stone, and stand. Our bonus words are: skate, staple and student. The silly sentence is: The silly student wanted to spin, skip, and step down the slope. One way your child can practice his/her list at home is to have mock spelling tests. This helps them to hear their words and some extra practice printing them. I do put notations on your child’s test designating possible letters to work on at home. Another printing concept is to try and keep their words on the lines. Children will have words marked wrong on their spelling tests if they use capital letters incorrectly. Just a few pointers to assist with your child’s success on their spelling tests.

Reading: Continuation with non-fiction text features. They are becoming expert detectives spotting and utilizing the various features within their non-fiction books. We will continue identifying the main idea and details that support it.

Writing: Opinion writing has begun. We worked on a practice piece and this week we will begin our new topic with a graphic organizer and first draft.

Math: Begin Module 3—Place value, counting and comparison of numbers to 1,000. I will be returning your child’s Module 2 test this week.

Science: Properties of Matter

Reminder Tidbits:

*Wednesday, October 16th: Late Start

*Friday, October 18th: Our class is selling popcorn, so bring those quarters! I left my list of volunteers at school, so Monday, I’ll send those parents a reminder email.

*Thursday, October 24: School Pictures

*Friday, October 25th: Field Trip (a.m.)

Another busy October Week!

Fondly,

Mrs. Burke

A huge thank you to all parents who worked with their children on shoe tying. Last Monday, most children came to school eagerly ready to tie their shoes. Now there’s less tripping. A handful of students still need to complete this task, so please continue to assist with this. Check out You Tube tutorials for some creative ways to tie shoes. They may help. Those dangling laces are a hazard. Thanks again for all the tying practice!

That about does it—-Happy week ahead!

Fondly,

Mrs. Burke
