Our Hive’s Blog Has Arrived

on September 15, 2019

Hello Second Grade Parents!

I was happy to meet so many parents at our Open House. I hope you enjoyed visiting your child’s classroom (Hive) where they spend so much of their weekly time. They were excited to share their work, classroom and school with you.

I will be sending out a weekly blog with general plans and any upcoming events. I will try to keep it short and sweet, but sometimes, well maybe more than sometimes I get carried away.

Our weekly plans for Hive 108:

Spelling: ( short vowels and adding the “magic e” to make long vowels) Our words are: at, ate, mad, made, fin, fine, not, note, hop, hope and the bonus words are: tap, tape, slid and slide. Our sentence is: We can hop and then slide into the fine pool.

Spelling practice ideas are on the back of your child’s blue home work folder. I encourage at least one a week to be completed along with mock tests at home. These do not need to be returned to school. Also during spelling, we do practice correct formation and correct usage of upper and lower case letters. Please practice these at home, too!

Your child’s first spelling test will come home on Monday. Most did very well. 🙂 I did look at their printing and highlighted some letters, those are ones that can be practiced at home as they print out their new weekly lists.

Reading: We are and will continue to work on and review comprehension, accuracy, fluency and expanding vocabulary strategies. Backing up and rereading, asking questions as we read and look for known patterns/chunks to decode unknown words are a few we have practiced. I am hoping to complete required district testing this week and then be able to concentrate on our reading routines.

Math: We will be having our first test this week. A review for Module 1 will go home on Monday. I do recommend that your children keep their homework pages that are returned every day in a folder at home for extra review.

At this time, I am going to once again change the math homework procedure. I will be sending home your child’s Eureka math homework book. It will have red lines on the sides of the books. They will keep these at home and only return the assigned homework page the following day. The assigned pages will be posted in their planners. Please be sure they have their homework everyday, completed and placed in their homework folders (blue bee folder), so it can be corrected and reviewed in class. This is extra support for the lesson. Thank you!!!!!!

Also, at anytime that there may be confusion with math home work, you can utilize You Tube. Just enter Eureka math for second grade, type in the module number and lesson number and a review will be displayed.

Writing: We will continue to work on personal narratives putting our ideas onto a story board to answer who?, what?, where? when? and how?

Extra tidbits:

*If your child does not have a headset for classroom use, please be sure to send one in. I do prefer headsets and not earbuds, but ask you child which works best for them.

*Just a kind reminder to continue sending in healthy snacks for our morning snack time. Fruit or vegetables are highly recommended. No chocolate or sugary treats. Thanks!

*I have told the class that I will be checking their shoe tying abilities after October 1st. Please practice if your child does not know how to tie his/her shoes. I don’t want anyone getting hurt tripping on long dangling laces.

*We do have a half day of school on Friday, September 20th

Well that should do it now.

Enjoy the remainder of the weekend!

Fondly,

Mrs. Burke
