Today marks the half-way point of the FIRST Card Marking. Progress reports were generated for students with low scores or missing assignments. Students may see me to turn in any work that is missing or redo an assignment or test. The end of the card marking is October 16th.
LANGUAGE ARTS Class – 2nd hour
Please check to see if students are reading each night (they may read with your or with a sibling if they like)!
Today your student will come home with a “Daily Reading Log.” Students are encouraged to read to self, read to someone or read with you. They can feel free to choose:
magazines, sports articles, novels, comics, textbooks, travel guides, fiction, non-fiction, the dictionary, encyclopedias, poems, biographies, etc.
If kids need a book, they can borrow from my classroom collection or they can check one out at the library @ OL Smith.
Please check to see kids are reading 20 min per day & sign off on the reading log everyday!

LANG ARTS
ELA students are working on a 3 paragraph draft & final copy “On Turning 10.”
The final copy will be due on Monday, 9.21.15. Please review their writing, edit, revise & be ready to turn in the final copy to be graded.

Students started 6 quadrilateral area problems in class today (on grid paper).
Please have them complete all six problems to turn in on Friday, 9.18.15
Each problem must show:
the figure, the formula, show the work & number the square units inside the figure
Back by popular demand 🙂 THE DAILY READING LOG!!
On Monday, September 21st your Language Arts students will bring home a DAILY READING LOG!
Please sign it each night, check in to see if your child is reading 20 minutes per day!
I will collect this log before the first report card marking, October 16th!
This week we continue to create & practice classroom procedures (Bellwork / Daily 5 & CAFE / Classwork / Homework) and NWEA Map Testing for Language Arts & Math skills.
Hopefully we will have the student planners to send home soon!
Language Arts – 2nd hour
We will be working on CAFE strategies for literacy
Identifying theme in literature
Working on increasing reading stamina in good fit books
Math – 3rd & 4th Hours
We will begin to use SLOT books for math bellwork for number systems
In geometry we will use our interactive student notebooks to define geometric figures & find area of triangles & quadrilaterals
ALL Classes: Please bring in supply list (passed out on 9/10/15)
-pocket folder for each class, pencils, paper & composition book

Textbook: 6th Grade Holt Mcdougal ELA Literature * text will be kept in the classroom
The math text will be used in classroom also.
Grading:
90-100 A
80-89 B Suggested Supplies: A notebook/folder with pockets for each subject
70-79 C Several pencils and pens – everyday
60-69 D Loose leaf paper
0-59 E Colored pens or pencils if desired

Students will be exposed to various styles of instruction:
-active / participatory learning -Daily 5 & CAFE Strategies
-drill & practice -visual representations – mapping
-prompt writing -cooperative groups
Grades will be determined on the following:
-Tests -Quizzes
-Classwork & Bellwork -Homework
-Projects / Assignments
** Progress Reports will be sent home 2 to 3 weeks prior to the end of each marking period. Students will also be given a progress note “pass” to come in & complete any missing work before the final grade is given.
You may also view grades / assignments / progress on PARENT CONNECT. Stop in the main office to sign up for your own ID & password.
Classroom Management: OL Smith will continue the building wide implementation of PBIS.

This year I will be teaching 6th grade ELA & Math.

-Black / white covered “compostion notebook”
-A fodler or separate binder pocket section for each class subject
-pens & pencils with erasers
-paper to get started
