Our 2nd grade students will be working on:
Reading:
Students will describe how words and phrases (e.g., regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song.
Writing:
Students will write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.
Also, with guidance and support from adults and peers, focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing. They will recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
Math: Students will use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. They will fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies and by end of grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
Science: Students will be investigating this week to see if there is a smaller earth material than silt.
Social Studies: Studies will continue to work on map skills and how to use a map.
Our field trip to the Ann Arbor Hands on Museum is on Monday, October 23rd. Please make sure that your child brings a sack lunch with a drink (not glass) as well as a snack. If you are a chaperone, please be in the classroom by 8:50. We will leave as soon as the buses arrive. This should be a fun experience for all and the students are really looking forward to it!
