The second half of our math test will be on Friday.  It will cover bar graphs, and questions about bar graphs.  The last part of the study guide will be sent home on Wednesday for students to complete.

March is Reading Month

On Tuesday, March 13, we will be reading with a stuffed animal or friend.  Students have asked about the size and I have been telling them that they need to be able to carry it in to class.  It should be an enjoyable experience with our stuffed reading buddy.

Homework for the week of March 12, 2018

The homework packet is brought home on Monday which includes all the homework listed below. The packet is due on Friday.

Monday-read 20 minutes, adding 3 numbers-math, spelling triangles.

Tuesday-read 20 minutes,  bar graph and 3X each-spelling.

Wednesday-read 20 minutes,   spelling-rhyming,  favorite pets bar graph-math.

Thursday-read 20 minutes, draw a picture and hide words-spelling-triangles, create a bar graph-math.

***Spelling and Math quiz on Friday.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday-read 20 minutes.

Focus for the week of March 12-16, 2018

This week our second grade students will be working on:

Reading:  Students will ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

Math:  Students will draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories.  They will solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph.

Writing:  Students will work on opinion writing.  They will work on coming up with an idea, supporting reasons and will be editing, revising and publishing.

Science: Students will learn how to explain the sturcture, properties and interactions of matter. They will observe mixtures and changes that are made when solids are mixed with water and then become solids again.

Social Studies:  Students will learn about economic wants and how it affects the community and what a business specializes in.

March is Reading Month!

Wild About Reading!

Each March, Miller school comes together to celebrate reading through March is Reading Month. We hope to refresh and rejuvenate our young readers. It is a perfect opportunity for families to reset home reading patterns and to model and encourage recreational reading. Our theme this year is Wild About Reading!  A calendar of the months activities is listed below.

Mystery Readers will be staff members. After playing the mystery reader recording, each class will call ext 77555 with their guesses. The 7th caller with the correct answer is the winner of a read-aloud book.

Literacy Night will be 4:30-6:00 pm on Wednesday, March 28.

Students will vote for their favorite door. K-2 will vote for 3-5 and 3-5 will vote for K-2. Two winners:(one from K-2 and one from 3-5) will receive PIZZA reading party.

Daily teacher read aloud (K-2: Charlotte’s Web, 3-5: Wonder)

Guest readers will also be available on certain days. There is a sign-up sheet on the Google Drive

Math Test on Friday, March 9, 2018

Our math test will be on Friday, March 9, 2018.  It will cover arrays, story problems involving length and adding three and four two digit problems together.  A study guide will be sent home on Wednesday for students to finish.

Focus for the Week

This week our second graders will be learning:

Reading:  Students will describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.

Math:  Students will use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve word problems involving lengths that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as drawings of rulers) and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Writing:  Students will continue to work on narrative writing.  They will work on editing, revising and publishing.  Opinion writing will be introduced and started.

Science: Students will learn how to classify different materials by their observable properties by using screens to separate a mixture of small objects and writing about it in my notebook.

Social Studies:  Students will learn about economic wants and how it affects the community.
