This week our second grade students will be working on:
Reading: Students will learn how to use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.
Math: Students will learn to fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. They will also learn to fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies and by end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
Writing: Students will work on writing narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure. They will also with guidance and support from adults and peers, focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing.
Science: Students will continue to learn about sand and rocks. They will be working on learning about the structures and properties of rocks.
Social Studies: Students will understand that communities are places where there is a government. They will learn how a community’s government keeps people safe. They will begin to explore urban, suburban and rural communities.

Our spelling test will be on Friday morning.
The homework sheet is brought home on Monday which includes all the homework listed below. The homework is due the following day. Students have a homework notebook to write spelling and any other homework in. Math homework will usually be on a separate sheet of paper and can be returned to school in their folder.
Monday-read 20 minutes, math bag game, spelling-write words 5 times each, circle all the vowels and underline the consonants.
Tuesday-read 20 minutes, math lesson 5 homework, spelling make 3 lists short e, short o, and short u, sort words and add 3 words to each list.
Wednesday-read 20 minutes, math-math bag games, spelling-write each word in a sentence, math-math bag.
Thursday-read 20 minutes, spelling-have someone give you a pretend spelling test in your homework notebook, math- lesson 6 homework.

Math: Students will learn to make a ten within 100 and subtract single-digit numbers from 10 within 100.
Writing: Students will work on write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure. Students will use their writing to learn how to revise and edit. They will continue on to publishing.
Science: Students will continue to learn about sand and rocks. We will be sorting, investigating and discussing rocks.
Social Studies-Students will understand that communities are places where people live, work and play.
