Focus for the week of October 8, 2018

This week our second grade students will be working on:

Reading:  Students will learn to ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

Math:  Students will learn to measure to determine how much longer one object is than another, expressing the length difference in terms of a standard length unit. They will measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different lengths for the two measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.
Also, students will use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve word problems involving lengths that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as drawings of rulers) and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. 

Writing:  Students will work on writing narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.

Science: Students will learn about the roles of water in Earth’s surface processes They will also learn about Earth materials and systems

Social Studies-Students will use maps to describe the spatial organization of the local community by applying concepts including relative location and using distance, direction, and scale.

Focus for the week of October 1, 2018

This week our second grade students will be working on:

Reading:  Students will learn to describe how words and phrases (e.g., regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song.

Math:  Students will learn to measure to determine how much longer one object is than another, expressing the length difference in terms of a standard length unit. Reading:  Students will learn to describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.

Math:  Students will learn to measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.

Writing:  Students will work on writing narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.

Science: Students will continue to learn about structure and properties of matter.  We will be sorting, investigating and discussing rocks.

Social Studies-Students will understand that communities are places where people live, work and play. They will compare the physical and human characteristics of the local community with those of another community.

Math:  Students will learn to make a ten within 100 and subtract single-digit numbers from 10 within 100.

Homework for the week of September 17, 2018

The homework sheet is brought home on Monday which includes all the homework listed below. The homework is due the following day. Students have a homework notebook to write spelling and any other homework in.  Math homework will usually be on a separate sheet of paper and can be returned to school in their folder.

Monday-read 20 minutes, math bag game, spelling-write words 5 times each, circle all the vowels and underline the consonants, math homework lesson 7 and math bag.

Tuesday-read 20 minutes, math bags, spelling make 3 lists short e, short o, and short u, sort words and add 3 words to each list.

Wednesday-read 20 minutes,  math-lesson 8, math bag games, spelling-write each word in a sentence, math-math bag.

Thursday-read 20 minutes, spelling-have someone give you a pretend spelling test in your homework notebook, math pretest-study and complete problems for test.

***Spelling test and Math test on Friday.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday-read 20-30 minutes
