Focus for the week of November 26, 2018

This week our second grade students will be working on:

Reading:  Students will learn to identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe.

Math:  Students will understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones. They will count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s

Writing:  Students will write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.

Science: Students will continue to learn about the roles of water in Earth’s surface processes. This also includes  plate tectonics and large-scale system interactions

Social Studies:  Students will describe the means people create for moving people, goods, and ideas within the local community. They will compare the physical and human characteristics of the local community with those of another community. They will describe the major landforms of the Earth )mountains, plains, valleys, hills). E.FE.02.22 Describe the major bodies of water on the Earth’s surface(lakes, ponds,oceans, rivers, streams).

Children of Yemen Fundraiser

We at Miller, as a community have committed to and will be raising funds for “Children of Yemen”, a worthy, relevant and just humanitarian cause!  All funds raised during PTA and school sponsored events will be dedicated to Children of Yemen, facing one of the worst humanitarian crises of all time. Family Field Trip November 28, 2018

Family Field Trip to the Lincoln Park Skating Arena, Wednesday November 28, 2018 from 6 – 8 p.m., transportation will be provided, permission slips and monies to the Office are due no later than Tuesday November 20, 2018.  Parents or siblings over 18 must accompany the student.

Focus for the week of November 19, 2018

This week our second grade students will be working on:

Reading:  Students will learn to identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.

Math:  Students will understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones. They will count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s

Writing:  Students will write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.  Also with guidance and support from adults and peers, they will focus on a topic an strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing.

Science: Students will continue to learn about the roles of water in Earth’s surface processes. This also includes Earth materials and systems.

Social Studies:  Students will  use maps to describe the spatial organization of the local community by applying concepts including relative location and using distance, direction, and scale. They will learn to describe land use in the community(e.g.where people live, where services are provided, where products are made. They will construct maps of the local community that contain symbols, labels, and legends denoting human and natural characteristics of place.
