Focus for the week

This week our second grade students will be working on:

Reading:  Students will learn to compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g., Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures.

Math:  Students will understand why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations. They will add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.

Writing:  Students will write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.

Science: Students will continue to learn about the structures of matter and the surfaces of the earth as it relates to solid matter.

Social Studies: Students will explain why people form governments. They will use examples to describe how local government affects the lives of its citizens. Students will identify services commonly provided by local governments (e.g., police, fire departments, schools, libraries, parks).
