Focus for the Week

Our focus this week will be on MSTEP testing on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.  Students are encouraged to go to sleep by 9 pm and to eat a healthy breakfast.  Even though we are testing this week and next we will still continue to work on reading, math, science and social studies.

In Reading:  As a class we will work on describing the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence, and cause/effect.

In Math:  We will work on multiplying one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 in the range 10–90 (e.g., 9 × 80, 5 × 60) using strategies based on place value and properties of operations. We will use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

In Social Studies:  We will be learning how entrepreneurs combine natural, human, and capital resources to produce goods and services in Michigan. We will be able to explain how scarcity, opportunity costs, and choices affect what is produced and consumed in Michigan.

In Science:  Students will understand that water is found in oceans, rivers, lakes, and ponds by using a thinking map to organize where water is found.  They will also understand volume and mass by observing how much water a dry sponge can soak up.  Students will discuss how and what they discovered from the experiment.
