Focus for the Week

Today is the start of the 3rd card-marking. Parent-Teacher Conferences will take place only for those students who are not working at their fullest potential. Letters home and phone calls will be made to schedule any parent meetings.

A summary of the units of study for each subject is below.

Reading:

Unit 7 Continuation: During this five week unit, students will learn that realistic fiction is a classification of literature containing stories that could happen in the real world, in a time and setting that is possible, and with characters that are true to life, yet drawn from the writer’s imagination. Students will learn that realistic fiction genre can be divided into different categories using aspects of theme (e.g., survival friendship diversity, tolerance, environmental preservation, courage, freedom, justice).

Math:

Unit 6: In this unit, students will explore the relations among segments, rays, and lines as well as the geometric figures that can build from them, including angles, polygons, and frames for prisms and pyramids. Although our math unit has changed its focus to Geometry standards, please remember students should be still studying their math facts at home, as we will continue with our multiplication quizzes each week.

Science:  Unit 3 – Structure and Function of Living Things

In the first cycle of this unit students investigate how physical and behavioral characteristics help organisms meet their survival needs. Initially they investigate the functions of plant parts and relate how these functions and characteristics (e.g., leaf, shape, thorns, odor, and color) assist plants in their survival in specific environments.

Writing:

During this two week unit, students will plan, write and publish short research projects that build knowledge about topics.  The structure of informative texts will be reviewed: introducing and developing a topic, grouping facts and definitions, and providing concluding statements or sections.  Editing and publication will be a focus.

Social Studies:

The Government of Michigan: In this unit students extend their civic perspective from second grade local government to state government. They begin with an examination of the purposes of government and ways in which the government of Michigan works to fulfill those purposes. By exploring the concept of representative government, students learn how the power of government resides with the people.
