Monday – Three ways to measure volume

Content Objective
Students will demonstrate knowledge of what volume is and the different methods for measuring it.

S.IP.07.13 Use tools and equipment (spring scales, stop watches, meter sticks and tapes, models, hand lens, thermometers, sieves, microscopes, hotplates, pH meters) appropriate to scientific investigations.

S.IP.07.14 Use metric measurement devices in an investigation.

Language Objective
Students will discuss and write to gain a better understanding of how to measure volume.

HOMEWORK – Complete the following sentence frames:

  • Volume is___________________
  • To measure the volume of regular shaped solids you use a _________ and you ___________________________________________________.
  • To measure the volume of liquids you use a _________ and you ____________ _________________________________________________.
  • To measure the volume of irregular shaped solids you use a ________ and you _____________________________________________________.

Pictures

I finally was able to get my phone to connect to iBlog so that I am able to post pictures again.

I did it!

Friday – Computer Lab

Content Objective
Students will demonstrate knowledge of when and how to appropriately use the different metric units and tools in different situations when measuring distance.

S.IP.07.13 Use tools and equipment (meter sticks and tapes,) appropriate to scientific investigations.

Language Objective

Students will read and write to gain a better understanding of metric concepts while using resources (PowerPoint & Quizlet) on the iLearn site in the computer lab.

Homework – Only if they need to finish up missing work

Thursday – last day of distance measurement

Content Objective
Students will demonstrate knowledge of when and how to appropriately use the different metric units in different situations when measuring distance.

S.IP.07.13 Use tools and equipment (spring scales, stop watches, meter sticks and tapes, models, hand lens, thermometers, sieves, microscopes, hotplates, pH meters) appropriate to scientific investigations.

S.IP.07.14 Use metric measurement devices in an investigation.

Language Objective
Students will write to estimate and collect data during a distance measurement lab and to complete practice sheets.

We finished up the last of four worksheets on metric measurement.  If the students do not have them completed it is homework for them.

Wednesday –

Content Objective
Students will demonstrate knowledge of when and how to appropriately use the different metric units in different situations when measuring distance.

S.IP.07.13 Use tools and equipment (spring scales, stop watches, meter sticks and tapes, models, hand lens, thermometers, sieves, microscopes, hotplates, pH meters) appropriate to scientific investigations.

S.IP.07.14 Use metric measurement devices in an investigation.

Language Objective
Students will write to estimate and collect data during a distance measurement lab and to complete practice sheets.

Today the students watched a short BrainPop about metric prefixes then they worked to finish up their distance measurement lab.  When they finished the lab the worked on three different worksheets to sharpen their metric usage skills.

Homework – NONE

Tuesday – Measurement Lab

Content Objective
Students will demonstrate knowledge of how to measure distance using metric tools and  units.

S.IP.07.13 Use tools and equipment (spring scales, stop watches, meter sticks and tapes, models, hand lens, thermometers, sieves, microscopes, hotplates, pH meters) appropriate to scientific investigations.

S.IP.07.14 Use metric measurement devices in an investigation.

Language Objective
Students will write to estimate and collect data during a distance measurement lab.

Today we looked a little bit at converting between units in the metric system.  (ie. 1 meter =100 centimeters, 1 meter = 1000 millimeters, 1 meter = 0.001 kilometers, 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters and 3.76 meters = 376 centimeters)

Homework – NONE

Monday – Distance Measurement

Content Objective
Students will demonstrate knowledge of how to measure distance using metric tools and units.

S.IP.07.13 Use tools and equipment (spring scales, stop watches, meter sticks and tapes, models, hand lens, thermometers, sieves, microscopes, hotplates, pH meters) appropriate to scientific investigations.

S.IP.07.14 Use metric measurement devices in an investigation.

Language Objective
Students will write to estimate and collect data during a distance measurement lab.

Homework – NONE

Friday – fun day

Content Objective
Students will demonstrate application of conducting scientific procedures by reproducing the balancing of ten nails on the head of one nail.
S.IP.07.14 Design and conduct scientific investigations.

Language Objective
Students will write a step-by-step procedure for how to balance 10 nails on the head of one.

Today we finally figured out how to balance ten nails on the head of one.  The students homework is to write a good procedure for how to accomplish this.  This will be graded as a summative assignment.

We are still experiencing some iLearn issues.  It seems that if students are experiencing problems with logging on they will need to log on to the district website from inside a Dearborn Public School and change their password.  It should work after that.

Have a great weekend!

Thursday

I apologize that the iLearn site was down last night.  I received many emails to inform me of this but did not see them until this morning as I was busy with Open House last night.  I checked with the Dearborn Public Schools Webmaster and he assured me that this was an emergency and it will not happen very often.

Anyway, I extended the homework deadline one more night on that assignment.

Content Objective
Students will demonstrate analysis of writing procedures by working in groups editing their peers work.
S.IP.07.14 Design and conduct scientific investigations.

Language Objective
Students will write a final version step-by-step procedure for how to open a locker.

The homework is to write a final version, step-by-step procedure for how to open a locker.

Stormy Wednesday – Open House

Tonight is Open House – Hope to see everyone here!

Content Objective
Students will demonstrate comprehension of the metric system and the customary measurement system.
S.IP.07.14 Use metric measurement devices in an investigation.

Language Objective
Students will write to complete a note taking sheet while viewing websites about the metric and customary systems while in the computer lab.

Homework – finish the worksheet about the metric system and the customary system.
