Tuesday – What is Matter?

Content Objective
Students will demonstrate comprehension of what matter is and what matter is not by completing a t-chart.

Language Objective
Students will write a short paragraph describing what matter is and what is not matter and include examples.

In class we had a discussion about what is matter and what is not matter. As a class we created definitions of each and made a t-chart to organize examples of each.  The assignment was to complete the following sentence frames.

“Examples of matter include ___, ___ and ___ because they all __________________.”

“Things that are not matter include ___, ___ and ___ because they all __________________.”

Thursday – (4 day weekend)

The students took a pre-test for the next unit “Properties of Matter”.

Discussed retakes.  If the students were not happy with yesterdays test result on the Metric Measurement test they are encouraged to go through the process of retaking it.  The retake form can be picked up in my classroom or downloaded and printed from my iLearn site.  Note: all retakes for my class are held after school and by appointment only.

Homework – NONE

Have a great weekend!

Content Objective
Students will demonstrate knowledge of what density is and how this relates to substances that float and substances that sink.

S.IP.07.14 Use metric measurement devices in an investigation.

Language Objective
Students will write to demonstrate how density relates to substances that float and substances that sink by completing the following sentence frames.

HOMEWORK – STUDY for measurement test and complete the following sentence frames.

  1. The density of water is ______________.
  1. The density of substances that float in water is _________________________.
  1. The density of substances that sink in water is _________________________.

Monday – NWEA week

The NWEA testing starts this week.  Ask your child for the note that was sent home from the office.

Also, this Wednesday will be the first test in Science class.  The test will be taken on the iPads and is on Metric Measurement.  Today we passed back several papers and went over the answers using the document camera and the promethean board.

Content Objective
Students will demonstrate knowledge of what density is and the different formula and units used when measuring it.

Language Objective
Students will read discuss and write to gain a better understanding of how to measure density.

HOMEWORK — Study for the Metric Measurement test (Wednesday).

Friday

Today the students finished working on annotating the article “Metric Measurement Notes” then worked on completing a graphic organizer that summarized the article.  This article and the graphic organizer can be found on the iLearn site.  Also they worked on a metric review sheet called “Little Millie Metric”.

Content Objective
Students will demonstrate knowledge of what density is and the different tools and units used when measuring it.

Language Objective
Students will read discuss and write to gain a better understanding of how to measure density.

HOMEWORK – consists of finishing the article and graphic organizer (chart).  Also the students should make sure that they have finished the Directed Reading (1-1) and Little Millie Metric.  Additionally, students should be studying for the metric measurement test which will be next Wednesday.

Thursday

I was out of the classroom for the first half of the day at a training session.  The students read pages 24-9 in the text books then completed a directed reading worksheet.

Content Objective
Students will demonstrate knowledge of what weight is and the different tools and units used when measuring it.

S.IP.07.13 Use tools and equipment (spring scales, stop watches, meter sticks and tapes, models, hand lens, thermometers, sieves, microscopes, hotplates, pH meters) appropriate to scientific investigations.

S.IP.07.14 Use metric measurement devices in an investigation.

Language Objective
Students will read discuss and write to gain a better understanding of how to measure mass.

HOMEWORK – Finish the directed reading if you do not finish it in class.

NOTE: The test on measurement will be next Wednesday.

Wednesday

Content Objective
Students will demonstrate knowledge of what mass is and the different tools and units used when measuring it.

S.IP.07.13 Use tools and equipment (spring scales, stop watches, meter sticks and tapes, models, hand lens, thermometers, sieves, microscopes, hotplates, pH meters) appropriate to scientific investigations.

S.IP.07.14 Use metric measurement devices in an investigation.

Language Objective
Students will discuss and write to gain a better understanding of how to measure mass.

Today we worked on a pre-reading activity in pairs using the important vocabulary on slips of paper.  Then the students read independently as they (annotated) “read to the text”.

HOMEWORK – None
