Content Objective:

I can gain a better understanding of the history of the planet Earth by researching a prehistoric animal.

Language Objective:

I can write to record my research of a prehistoric animal to prepare for a presentation.

HOMEWORK – 1.  Study for Vocabulary Quiz   2.  Continue research on ancient animal for Project/Presentation

Geologic Time – vocabulary words

eon – longest subdivision in the geologic time scale that is based on the abundance of certain types of fossils and is subdivided into eras, periods and epochs

epoch – next smaller division of time after the period: is characterized by differences in life forms that may vary regionally

era – the second longest division of geologic time: is subdivided into periods and is based on major worldwide changes in types of fossils

evolution – the changing of a species over time

extinction – the complete disappearance of a species

fossil – remains, imprints, or traces of prehistoric organisms that can tell when and where organisms once lived and how they lived

fossilized – to become preserved

fossil record – all of the fossils that have existed throughout life’s’ history whether they have been found or not

Geologic time scale – division of Earth’s history into time units based largely on the types of life forms that lived only during certain periods

index fossil – remains of species that existed on Earth for a relatively short period of time, were abundant and widespread geographically, and can be used by geologists to assign the ages of rocks

radioactive dating – process used to calculate the absolute age of rock by measuring the ratio of parent isotopes to daughter product in a mineral and knowing the half-life of the parent

rock strata – layers of rocks with consistent characteristics

Friday

Content Objective:
