Curriculum and Classroom Procedures

This course is designed to help students fully understand the concepts in the Dearborn Public Schools and State of Michigan Grade Level Content Expectation (G. L. C. E)as well as the Common Core objectives.

Topics and Textbooks

The Dearborn Public Schools’ Curriculum for 7th grade Science includes: Physical and Chemical Properties and Changes in Matter, Waves and Energy, Structures and Processes of Living Things and Fluid Earth and Human Activities. We use the topic textbooks from the Holt Science & Technology series.

These books are accessible online @ https://my.hrw.com. Each student will be assigned a User Name and Password so that they can access the books online.

Homework

Homework is designed and assigned as needed to help students work toward a fuller understanding of the G. L. C. E. Science and the Common Core objectives. If students do not practice through the use of their homework assignments, they will have difficulty fully grasping the concepts in these G. L. C. E. and Common Core. Late assignments will not be accepted for credit after they have been checked/discussed in class, as their value as a learning opportunity has expired.

Planner

It is the school policy that students use their planner to keep track of all assignments. The daily agenda as well as the homework will be posted in the classroom each day. It is the students’ responsibility to copy this into their planner so that they can refer to it as needed. The homework will also be posted outside the classroom door at the end of each day.

Science Notebook

Students should maintain an organized science notebook throughout the school year. A note section will be very important to keep track of daily activities, reading and bell work. Students should also keep track of all assignments, quizzes etc. in an orderly fashion within this notebook. A ½ inch thick three ring binder with pockets inside the front and back cover is recommended for this purpose.

Classroom Activities

Classroom activities such as lab work, group work, demonstrations, etc. will be part of the daily routine. Some are graded and some are not but all will serve to help students gain a different perspective and a deeper understanding of concepts in the G. L. C. E. and the Common Core standards. Students are to arrive to class on time and with all needed materials on a daily basis. They are also expected to participate in classroom activities, discussions and group work.

Attendance

Students are expected to attend classes daily and keep up with the rest of the class. In the event that a student must be absent, they should find out what they missed from a study buddy and/or the assignment calendar outside my classroom. It is the students’ responsibility to make sure they get caught up and to not fall further behind.

Seating Chart

Students may choose their seats early in the school year. A seating chart will then be created and students must sit in these seats. If the seating chart does not work to provide a good learning environment for all, it will be re-arranged.

Assessment and Grading

Summative Assessments are the best indicators of a students’ mastery of the concepts in the Benchmarks and will represent about 80 % of a student’s grade. These are generally in the form of traditional tests and quizzes as well as alternative assessments such as projects and presentations. Students will be notified about a week ahead of time for tests and most other assessments but not necessarily for quizzes. Second attempts on summative assessments will be permitted and encouraged. The procedure for second attempts will be discussed in class and the form is available on my iblog2 site under downloads or paper copies are always available in my classroom.

Formative Assessments will make up the remaining 20% and are designed to guide and support the learning process. These are generally in the form of the students’ lab work, homework, class work, projects and group work. This is the practice portion. Students should feel that it is okay to make mistakes on these assignments but it is not okay to not try.
