Welcome to Biology

Biology is the study of life.  This year we will be exploring the following topics in major units:

  • Thinking like a scientist
  • Evolution
  • Ecosystems
  • Biomolecules
  • Photosynthesis & Respiration
  • DNA & Protein Synthesis
  • Genetics
  • Cell Division

Supplies needed

  • 3 ring binder (1-1.5″)
  • Loose leaf paper (college ruled is best)
  • Divider tabs (5) labeled: Bellwork, Notes, Assignments, Labs

Textbook

  • Modern Biology, CD to be downloaded then returned (cost to replace $80)

Classroom guidelines

  • Be in your assigned seat and working on the assigned Bellwork when the final bell rings.
  • Get out ALL materials to class AND put them away when you leave.
  • Follow directions the first time they are given.
  • Treat each person in this room with respect and dignity.
  • Follow all procedures and policies as outlines in the DHS handbook.

Online learning

Cell Phones

Allowed before 7:10am, during lunch in cafeteria, and after 2:15

In class phones need to be off and either in bag, pocket or in pouches.  

If you have your phone out, you’ll be asked to put it away, or in a pouch.  You will be sent to the office to your administrator if you refuse to comply with the cell phone policy,

Attendance

Present (in seat when bell rings):  

  • If unexcused tardy, students are to complete a tardy slip when they arrive to class🡪 place in tardy basket
  • If excused, place pass in tardy basket =, sit down and catch up with the class.  Do not interrupt class.

Absences:

  • If excused, you will need to find out what we did from another classmate, or go to google classroom to find out what we did. There is a hanging file folder with the handouts.  You can also come before/after school or email the teacher questions.
  • Tests and quizzes will be made up before school or after school. You are expected to schedule a makeup time within 2 weeks.

Passes

  • Planner is required
  • Not given in first & last 10 minutes of class
  • Bathroom passes not allowed due to 7 min passing period

Grading

Gradebook:

  • 80% Summative Assessments (Tests, quizzes, labs and projects)
  • 20% Formative Assessments (homework, bellwork, labs, binders)

Grading Procedures

  • Retakes: Students must have 100% of binder completed to retake a summative assessment.  Retake is final grade
    • Must complete additional study work and fill out form to qualify for retake. Retake includes short answer and fill in the blank
  • Final Exam: end of semester, covers entire semester.  11% of overall semester grade
  • Projects will be assigned throughout and graded with a rubric
  • Binders collected on test day
  • Bellwork on board everyday
    • need to include learning target/date/question/answer
  • Test day is the last day to turn in work

Make up work

  • Allowed the same number of days absent to make up an assignment
  • Student is responsible for getting missing assignments from teacher
  • Missed tests or labs will be made-up after school or Friday at lunch (schedule with teacher)

90-100 A  Mastery
87-89 B+  Proficient
80-86.5 B  Proficient
77-79 C+  Developing
70-76.5 C  Developing
62-69 D  Little Evidence
60-62 D-  Very Little Evidence
Below 60 E  No Evidence
