  1. Compete: to fight for the same thing
  2. trade market: places to sell and buy things
  3. colony: a country that is controlled by another country.
  4. independence: when a country is free from colonization
  5. alliances: a group of countries that are friendly with each other.
  6. unite: to bring together
  7. Empire:a country and all of its colonies
  8. rebellion: to go against the government
  9. tension: bad feelings; problems
  10. Emperor: the ruler of an empire
  11. wounded: hurt
  12. Rebel: a person who goes against the government.
  13. blame: put responsibility on someone
  14. chain reaction: events that are linked to each other
  15. assassinate: to kill a president or government worker
  16. Victory: Win
  17. Defeat: Loss
  18. Nation: country
  19. Militarism عسكرية – rapid growth of the military and weapons
  20. Trenches- خنادق defending a place by fighting from deep underground
  21. Imperialism استعمار- the practice of expanding a country by taking colonies
  22. Nationalism الوطنية- each nation wanted to become independent and unite all of its people

39. tenant: a person who rents an apartment from a landlord.

40. tenement: 5 or 6 story buildings in the cities

41. slums: a poor, dirty place to live

42. ventilation: letting fresh air come into a room

43. Sanitary: clean and healthy

44. Unsanitary: dirty and unhealthy

45. Miserable: Very sad

46. Population: the number of people living in a country

Gov. Chapter 3 Vocab

Gov Ch. 3 Vocab — This is the entire chapter, so take them slow and practice as there are some difficult ones.

1. ambassador: someone a president chooses to represent the country

2. article: one of the parts of the Constitution

3. Congress: Legislative Branch, Senate and House of Representatives

4. Preamble: introduction part of Constitution

5. amendment: a change or addition to the Constitution (27)

6. convention: a meeting

7. majority: more than half

8. prohibition: 21st amendment that made alcohol illegal

9. assemble: to come together as a group

10. express: to show your thoughts and feelings

11. militia: organized group of regular people who serve as soldiers when needed

12. opinion: a belief

13. civil: has to do with people (civilians)

14. convict: to find guilty of a crime

15. due process: right to a fair trial in court

16. evidence: proof used for a crime

17. grand jury: group of people who decide if a person is guilty or not

18. indict (indite): accuse or charge a person for crime

19. witness: someone who has seen or heard something

20. candidate: person who hopes to be elected

21. debate: argument discussion

22. sue: bring legal action against a person

1. bank: the land near a river

2. Mesopotamia: the land between the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers

3. Tribe: a group of people who have similar culture and live together

4. dike: a long wall that keeps out the water

5. Canal: a man-made river used for irrigation and traveling
