20. harbor: sea port

21. seeking: looking for

22. liberty: freedom

23. steerage: the part of a ship for passengers who pay the cheapest tickets.

24. ill: sick

25. old immigrants: people who came to America before 1880

26. new immigrants: people who came to America after 1880

27. escape: run away

28. Advertise: to announce something

29. unable: not able

30. denied: refused

31. Chinese Exclusion Act: a law signed in 1882 that did not allow Chinese Immigration to America.

32. xenophobia: fear of immigrants

33. prejudice: to have bad thoughts about someone because of their race, gender, religion or age.

34. Urbanization: the growth of cities (urban area)

35. Discrimination: treating people unfairly because of race, gender, religion or age.

36. Jim Crow Laws: laws that separated African Americans and whites in public places.

37. segregation: to separate people by race, religion, gender or age
