Weekly letter directions

Here are the directions for the weekly letter. In case students do not finish the letter in class or are absent, they have the directions here. If a student is absent from school on Friday when the letter is written, they are expected to complete the assignment outside of school and turn it in for a grade. Not turning in this assignment not only brings down their homework average, but also their writing grade. If the assignment is not turned in, a score of zero will be given, this translates to a 4 on the report card.

Book Talks, Timelines, Summaries

We are 2/3 of the way through our book talks. We have 8 more book talks scheduled for Monday. The students are doing a great job getting up in front of the class for their first formal speech.

The next book talk is already in the works. Students picked out a non-fiction book during library on Thursday. The assignments will be very similar for this book talk.

  1. Finish reading the book
  2. Write a full page summary, turn in
  3. Create a digit representation of topic (we will start this in class, if not finished in class, students will need to complete at home)
  4. Publish digital representation (graphic organizer/thinking map) on student iblog
  5. Write note cards to help prepare and organize speech about book
  6. Practice, practice, practice
  7. Give book talk speech while displaying digital representation

We will get this underway next week. Students should be reading their book for reading logs until finished with the book.

Timeline assignments

Book talks start tomorrow. Biography timelines will be presented during students’ book talk speech. Students should have their note cards complete and be practicing with you. Students practiced in small groups in class today and will practice again tomorrow. Your 5th grader can tell you if they are giving their book talk tomorrow, Friday, or Monday. Autobiography timelines will be shared later next week.

Tips from our Technology Coach, Mrs. Gwizdz to help with any troubleshooting on timelines are in an assignment on Google Classroom. Students need to go to Google Classroom to share their iblog address with me and complete their timeline assignments. Both timelines should be published to their blogs, due tomorrow.

Book Talk assignment

Homework is to finish note cards over the weekend and practice with you. Students will practice in small groups on Monday and sign up to give their talk. The more practice the better. This will be the first speech/book talk of several. Timelines will be presented during speech, so students need to make sure they are complete. Timelines are part of their grade.
