Look at slides 1-5 of chapter 15, posted on 3/31/20. Because of a religious movement called The Second Great Awakening, people began to believe that a person must do good things to get to Heaven. They realized that there were many problems in American society that should be corrected. One problem was that women did not have the same rights as men. In most states, women could not own property, or get an education beyond leaning to read, write, add, and subtract. And, women could not vote. Please watch the following videos. Be safe- Mr. Bennett

I hope that all of you are well. We’re going to begin the study of Ch. 15 which deals with changes that occurred in the early to mid 1800s. These changes are known as the Reform Movement. We’ve discussed how sectionalism (different ideas for different sections of the country) created big changes in industry, agriculture, and expansion. Some of these changes were not always good, and people started speaking out against problems that they believed should be corrected.

Please review the entire ch. 14 slides as a review. Over the weekend, please watch the short video on urbanization. Although it covers some issues after the American Civil War, it is a good overview of some of the problems faced by population growth in many cities and will give you a better understanding of some reform movements which we will cover later. Continue viewing the slides given for Chapter 14 during the week of March 13-20. Focus on slides 10-14 showing the effects of the cotton gin and its impact on cotton production, the expansion of slavery, the desire for more land, and the growing dependence of the southern economy on the textile mills of the north. Notice the social class structure of the south and the development of an upper class known as the “cottonocracy”.

Please continue viewing last week’s slide presentation,Ch. 14 focusing on slides 5-9, “Factory Conditions Become Worse” to “The Know Nothings”.

Consider how factory conditions changed since the time of the Lowell girls. Notice how labor begins to largely rely on children and new immigrants. What are some of the reasons why workers start to form unions? Why do Irish and German immigrants start to come to the U.S. is such large numbers? What are some of the reactions to this immigration by Americans and political parties?

Students will continue the study of Manifest Destiny during the Polk Administration focusing on the Battle of the Alamo, Texas and Oregon annexation, and the Mexican/American War. Students should review the slide presentation from the previous blog.

Students will begin the study of westward migration and “Manifest Destiny”, sections 1 & 2 of chapter 13. No quiz until we return from Mid-winter Break. Enjoy!
