Elements & Principles of Design

Mr. Bazzi explains the PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN in some of his paintings:

A.  The ELEMENTS OF DESIGN are the PARTS in an artwork.

There are 7 Elements of Design:

      1. LINE الخط 

        • any long mark made on a surface by a tool.

      2. SHAPE الشكل 

        • a 2-D area inside a closed line. It has only height and width.

      3. FORM الهيكل  

        • a 3D object that has height, width, and depth.

      4. COLOR اللون 

        • the way that we see light reflected from an object into our eye.

      5. VALUE كمية الغمقة أو الفتاحة 

        • the range of various shades and tints (darks and lights).

      6. SPACE مساحة الفراغ 

        • the areas behind or around or between the main shapes.

      7. TEXTURE الملمس

        • the way the surface feels to the touch, or the way it looks like it feels, such as rough or smooth or bumpy.

B.  The PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN are the different ways of arranging the Elements in an artwork.

There are 7 Principles of Design:

      1. BALANCE التوازن 

        • when all the different areas of an artwork appear to be equally distributed.

      2. PATTERN التكرار 

        • when parts in a design are repeated over and over again in a regular way.

      3. RHYTHM الإيقاع

        • when a repetition in a design changes it repeats, in an unpredictable way.

      4. MOVEMENT حركة الإتجاه 

        • when parts in an artwork go in a certain direction.

      5. EMPHASIS مكان التركيز 

        • the area an artwork that catches the viewer’s attention.

      6. CONTRAST الإختلاف 

        • when an artwork shows a variety of kinds.

      7. UNITY الانسجام

        • when all the parts in an artwork seem to belong together.
