Mrs. Hickson's Class

Dearborn Public Schools

Welcome to Mrs. Hickson’s remote classroom!

I want to start off by saying I hope everyone is well! I am going to try my best to keep your education moving forward based from my house to yours. This will be my primary form of communication along with your child’s school google email, their google classroom account, the remind app and my email. The children have used all of these resources many times before. If you have any questions, please email me. This is public, and if you post here, your question and my response will be seen by all. I plan on being available from 9-4 everyday. I will check my email hourly. Have your child set up an area they can work with their books, pencils, a place for the computer, iPad, and any other things they may need. Set a good time for your family to work. Many of you may be working from home. I am very flexible.

I also want to remind everyone that we are going to try and keep to as normal as possible. While I understand that sounds hard, having a schedule for meals, bedtime, etc is important to our mental well being. Making sure we exercise regularly and stay mentally fit with activities like games, puzzles, and chores that have the sense of completion and control can be important in uncertain times. Talk with your child about what they can and can’t control. We have discussed circle of control in school many times. A reassuring smile and hug can go a long way!

The Plan

I will post everyday on here by 9 a.m. I will also be sending a video MWF by 9 a.m. that can be watched anytime.

I will provide daily lesson directions, answers the following day, and feedback as much as possible. I will provide links to watch videos for math, science, and social studies. I will add assignments to google classroom, Readworks, and NewsELA. I will answer everyone’s questions through my email: hicksol@dearbornschools.org. Our grade level goal is to complete 4 math lessons a week with the help of the tutorial videos, Zearn, and your books. We will move forward with social studies and the Road to the American Revolution. In science we will complete the Mystery 4, which we started, and then do some mini lesson mysteries, all of which will be a link I send to you. For ELA we will work through the materials I sent home, the chapter book you have, and Readworks and NewsELA. I will post additional resources as we need them and any fun resources I come across as well.

What will kids do? Do the best you can to do the work I am assigning. Email me questions. Watch the videos and try the math to the best of your ability. Stay positive and don’t give up! This is new to everyone.

What will parents do? Take a deep breath! Be supportive and positive as much as possible. If you can, watch the videos together and talk. You don’t have to have all the answers, discussion goes a long way. Email me as well if you have questions.

Here we go! Look at the daily post for today’s plans!

Have a wonderful week of learning!

Lessons for 3/16/2020

Math:Module 5 Lesson 1 see the link below.

Our plan daily is to do the following in Math : Watch the video, do the Zearn lesson, then do your problem set and homework. We are always going to skip all Exit tickets. I want to use those when we come back. You would also do the application problem. Remind your parents these are usually review and do not go with the lesson of the day.

Lesson 1 says to use centimeter cubes. If you have anything cube shaped for a model great, if not, don’t worry, skip the building but still count what is on your problem set for number 1 and 2 You can still draw. This is a review families and they can do it without. There are templates in their math book for dot and grid paper.

Complete pages 2 and 3 in the Dynamath I gave you. I will post those answers tomorrow.

ELA Begin the packet with the article “Through the Eyes of Malala Yousfzai” on the top. I will post the answers to the first article tomorrow.

Read the first few chapters of the novel I gave you. Darth Vader group start with Stone Fox. We will begin writing reading responses tomorrow.

Read one of the Articles of the Day on Readworks and write three facts you learned or relearned from the article. Please do not copy and paste.

Science Finish: Protecting Your Farm From the Dust Bowl. You have the papers you need. Here is the link:https://mysteryscience.com/earth/mystery-10/interaction-of-earth-s-spheres-argumentation/228?code=MTI2MzM1NjE&t=student

Don’t forget bags!!!!

Lindbergh is creating bags of non-perishable food and toiletries for a homeless shelter. Our class has chosen to bring the fabric style grocery/shopping bags. We need at least 30 and only have 5….these are due by tomorrow.

If we don’t have the bags we can’t bag up all the other wonderful donated items for the homeless.

Please help us!
