March 20, 2020

Happy Friday! Here’s another fun “Start Your Day” video! I hope you are taking time to play with your siblings, help your parents, and just relax a bit. Maybe you can get your family members to do Go Noodle today or watch one of the other videos with you!

I thought some of you might be interested in this if you have access to Facebook. This is done by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

A SYMPHONY OF SCIENCE

Conducted by Michelle Merrill

FACEBOOK LIVE WEBCASTFRIDAY, MARCH 20 AT 10:45 AM ET

Math: There will be no new math lesson for today. Catch up if you aren’t done with lessons 1 – 4. If you are caught up, go ahead and work on ZEARN, Moby Max, Khan Academy, or M-Step practice. Maybe you can invent a fun math game to play with your family!

Well how did you do on that math? Probably pretty good! See, I told you you knew how to do it!

ELA: There will be no new assignments for today. Use today to finish up assignments from the rest of the week, go on Moby Max reading, work on M-Step practice or just read something you want to read.

Now would be a great time to write a narrative, write a poem, start a journal, create a graphic novel or comic book. If you create any of these I would love for you to share them with me!

Science: There will be no new science lesson for today. If you are not finished with the assignments from the rest of the week then use this time to work on those. The videos can be found on Monday – Thursday’s blog posts. Written assignments are on Googleclassroom. They will show as being assigned by Mrs. Stetz.

Social Studies: Today is a BIG DAY for our friends on Liberty’s Kids!!

Why do you think it was called the “Shot Heard ‘Round the World?” How do you think the colonists feel about Britain right now?

Where do you think they hid the arms and ammunition so that the British soldiers couldn’t find them?

To find out more about these important first battles, read the article on Ducksters and watch the History Brief video.

https://www.ducksters.com/history/battle_of_lexington_and_concord.php

You can go on a home safari with the Cincinnati Zoo on Facebook at 3 pm everyday! Here is a video of Moe the Sloth from yesterday.

There are more home safaris on their resources page. Click the link below to visit more animals!

I know…they’re kind of silly…but here’s an astronaut demonstrating washing her hair in space on the International Space Station.

Yesterday Max went to the Moon. Now he’s headed to Mars! Click on the link to hear about his adventures!

Here’s a second “just for fun” read aloud because it’s Friday and who doesn’t like “Arnie the Doughnut?”

Don’t forget about Lunch Doodles with Mo Willems everyday on The Kennedy Center site at 1:00 pm. If you missed it yesterday here it is! If you are doodling with Mo I would love to see some of your work! Email me pictures of your creations!

Now let’s end the week with a fun roller coaster ride! 😉

Have a wonderful weekend everyone. Enjoy your time with your family and try to exercise your body and mind. I’ll see you all on Monday. 🙂

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMxtwzroMTQ

Math: First check yesterday’s answers using the pages below.

Sorry, the picture won’t go the right way up no matter what I do…

Now you will watch the video for Lesson 4, do Lesson 4 ZEARN, work on the application problem, problem set, and homework. You will be multiplying to find volume. You have done this in class with me so it is not new. Remember length x width x height = Volume! You’ve got this! 😉

https://embarc.online/mod/page/view.php?id=302

When you are done you can do work on Moby Max, Khan Academy, or M Step practice. The link for M Step practice can be found on the right in Class Links.

ELA Read the article “Through the Eyes of Sadako Sasaki” then complete the questions. Remember you can look back in the article to answer the questions.

The answers to the Sylvia Mendez article are #9-A #10-B. If you did not have the correct answers, try to look back in the article to see if you understand why those are the correct answers.

Read the next few chapters of the novel I gave you. You will have a reading response to do on google classroom. If you have not done Tuesday’s prediction response or yesterday’s setting response please complete those. Make sure you are clicking Turn In when you are done.

Read another one of the Articles of the Day on Readworks and write three facts you learned or relearned from the article. Please do not copy and paste.

Spelling-There is a new list on Spelling city. Please practice the words so you can become a better speller. When you feel you are ready, have someone test you on the new words.

Social Studies: As we continue on the Road to Revolution, things are getting serious. There is a video I sent to your email that you can watch. You have to download then click on the video. It is me talking about all the events from this week so far. Then watch this Liberty’s Kids to see what happens next! See if you can figure out who is doing the voice for Paul Revere! 😉

For more information read this Ducksters Biography about Paul Revere.

https://www.ducksters.com/biography/paul_revere.php

The final video is a reading of the famous poem “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Science

Today’s Mystery Science mini lesson link is below. After watching the video, go to google classroom and answer questions in the assignment titled Hand Sanitizer. When you complete this assignment, hit Turn In.

I found an awesome site that has astronauts reading while they are in the International Space Station. Here is a video of “Max Goes to the Moon.”

Finally, today I have a video of an astronaut brushing his teeth in space. I just think these are interesting and kind of funny! 🙂

Don’t forget about Mo Willems and Doodle Lunch at 1:00. It is on the Kennedy Center site or you can just watch this one from yesterday.

March 18, 2020

Hi all! Happy Wednesday! I know we don’t usually have specials today but try to do some physical activity and practice your recorder/instrument. Also, Mo Willems, the illustrator of the Elephant and Piggy books and the Pigeon books is doing a Doodle Lunch live stream everyday. He is on the Kennedy Center’s website. It starts at 1:00. Here is a link to yesterday’s Doodle Lunch.

Leader In Me:

Not being in school or not being able to participate in our regular activities can sometimes make us sad or frustrated. What are some ways that we can “be the water,” or keep calm, even when we feel angry? Watch the video below. Talk to an adult about feelings you are having about this subject, write a journal entry to get your feelings out, email or text a friend, or email me to talk about how you are feeling.

https://limweekly.org/max-holly-habit-1-be-the-water/

Math-

Here are the answers for yesterday’s application problem, problem set and homework.

There are many other ways to show this answer.

Our plan daily is to do the following in Math : Watch the video, do the Zearn lesson, then do your problem set and homework. We are always going to skip all Exit tickets. I want to use those when we come back. You would also do the application problem. Remind your parents these are usually review and do not go with the lesson of the day.

Here is the link for Lesson 3:

ELA Read the article “Through the Eyes of Sylvia Mendez” then complete the questions. Remember you can look back in the article to answer the questions.

The answers to the Ruby Bridges article are #3-C #4-A #5-C #6-C #7B #8-B. If you did not have the correct answers, try to look back in the article to see if you understand why those are the correct answers.

Read the next few chapters of the novel I gave you. You will have a reading response to do on google classroom. If you have not done yesterday’s prediction response please complete that.

There is an assignment on google classroom that goes with this video.

Social Studies:

We are continuing with the Road to Revolution Unit. Please watch the Liberty’s Kids video. Think about the different points of views of the characters. Remember that Sarah is representing the views of the British and Loyalists, James is representing the views of Patriots, and Moses is representing the views of African-Americans at the time. Listen to Patrick Henry’s speech. Which viewpoint is he representing?

Welcome to Mrs. Hickson’s Remote Classroom

I want to start off by saying I hope everyone is well! I am going to try my best to keep your education moving forward based from my house to yours. This will be my primary form of communication along with your child’s school google email, their google classroom account, the remind app and my email. The children have used all of these resources many times before. If you have any questions, please email me. This is public, and if you post here, your question and my response will be seen by all. I plan on being available from 9-4 everyday. I will check my email hourly. Have your child set up an area they can work with their books, pencils, a place for the computer, iPad, and any other things they may need. Set a good time for your family to work. Many of you may be working from home. I am very flexible.

I also want to remind everyone that we are going to try and keep to as normal as possible. While I understand that sounds hard, having a schedule for meals, bedtime, etc is important to our mental well being. Making sure we exercise regularly and stay mentally fit with activities like games, puzzles, and chores that have the sense of completion and control can be important in uncertain times. Talk with your child about what they can and can’t control. We have discussed circle of control in school many times. A reassuring smile and hug can go a long way!

The Plan

I will post everyday on here by 9 a.m. I will also be sending a video MWF by 9 a.m. that can be watched anytime.

I will provide daily lesson directions, answers the following day, and feedback as much as possible. I will provide links to watch videos for math, science, and social studies. I will add assignments to google classroom, Readworks, and NewsELA. I will answer everyone’s questions through my email: hicksol@dearbornschools.org. Our grade level goal is to complete 4 math lessons a week with the help of the tutorial videos, Zearn, and your books. We will move forward with social studies and the Road to the American Revolution. In science we will complete the Mystery 4, which we started, and then do some mini lesson mysteries, all of which will be a link I send to you. For ELA we will work through the materials I sent home, the chapter book you have, and Readworks and NewsELA. I will post additional resources as we need them and any fun resources I come across as well.

What will kids do? Do the best you can to do the work I am assigning. Email me questions. Watch the videos and try the math to the best of your ability. Stay positive and don’t give up! This is new to everyone.

What will parents do? Take a deep breath! Be supportive and positive as much as possible. If you can, watch the videos together and talk. You don’t have to have all the answers, discussion goes a long way. Email me as well if you have questions.

Click on the link below for some fun virtual field trips!

Here we go! Look at the daily post for today’s plans!

Have a wonderful week of learning!

Free Meal Pickups

Dearborn Schools offering free breakfast and lunch pickup for students at six sites

Dearborn Public Schools is offering free pickup lunch and breakfast for students while school is closed for the mandatory shut down over the next three weeks.

Families will be able to stop in and pick up a bag with both breakfast and lunch for each child in the family.  Pickups will run daily from 10 a.m. to noon starting tomorrow, March 17 at Fordson, Edsel Ford and Dearborn high schools, McCollough-Unis, Salina Intermediate, and Woodworth Middle School.

Signage at each site will direct parents and students where to enter the building. Food will be near entrances to minimize the amount of time community members spend in the facilities.

Please note, meals are available to anyone age 18 and younger.  Students do not need to be present, and the Dearborn School student does not need to attend at that building.  A designated person can collect meals for multiple children. Meals for Saturday and Sunday can be picked up on Friday.

The program will allow the District’s 20,700 students to continue to have access to healthy food.  Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last week ordered all Michigan schools closed from March 16 through April 3 to slow the spread of novel coronavirus and cases of COVID-19.  Dearborn Schools is scheduled for spring break April 6 to 10, so school will not resume in the District until April 13.

The grab-and-go meals will be served at least through April 3.

Superintendent Glenn Maleyko praised the District’s food service team for quickly implementing this drastic change in service to meet the needs of families.

“We appreciate the patience of our families and community as we all try to adjust to this sudden change from closing schools,” Dr. Maleyko said.  “More than three quarters of our students qualify for free or reduced priced school meals. We realize this food is important to our families, many of whom may be facing additional financial hardships from the sudden economic changes related to COVID-19.”

Check the Dearborn Public Schools website at www.dearbornschools.org for any updates or changes to the meal program or for other issues regarding the school closure.
