Ask your child about the subjects written in their planner!! Ask them to explain what we did in class and have them explain the topic as if they are “teaching” you. These subjects should be a starting point for more discovery and discussion!!!
Answers to important questions.
What should we be doing at home if there is no homework?
No traditional homework DOES NOT mean that there is nothing to do!
Remember that there are many things that students should be working on at home on a regular basis.
*Reading fiction and non-fiction good fit books.
*Reflecting and writing about their reading.
*Practicing multiplication facts.
*Working on Spelling City.
*Studying Social Studies, Science, and Math vocabulary and materials in your content area binder or text book. Also, please feel free to research above and beyond what we are doing in the classroom on any given content area.
*Watching science videos- (Bill Nye, Magic School Bus, Study Jams)
*Researching current topics of study.
Sites for students:
*Moby Max
*Khan Academy
*MyOn
*Prep Dog
*Everyday Math
*Spelling City
Other sites of interest:
(This is not a comprehensive list. Search the web with your child and see what you can learn together!)
*Ducksters
*Study Jams
*BBC typing
*Ask Dr. Universe
*Amusement Park Physics
*Science Monster
*Historyforkids
*Bill Nye
What subjects are you studying in your classroom?
Please look in your student’s planner. Ask your student what was done in school that day. For example if the planner states that 4th grade Social Studies was “Pioneers” then your student should be able to tell you what we did that day. It might have been reading and discussing a trade book or historical fiction read aloud, watching a video, reading a textbook, doing a computer search….or all of them. Your child should be able to tell you, with the prompting of the topic, what was done that day. A second example would be that in Reading we wrote a “text to self” response. Ask your child about the response they wrote. They can bring home the binder and share it with you if you would like them to.
**Also, please note that tests and projects will announced on the blog, in the planners, and on Remind with lots of advance notice.
I hope this helps with two of the more common questions I encountered during conferences. Please contact me if you have any questions or comments.
Remind, emails, and the class blog.
Dear parents,
Please be aware that I do not get messages from Remind, the blog, or school emails to my phone. I can only see messages sent in the evening if I check these sites on my computer in the evening, which I do not usually have time to do on a regular basis. Also, the messages some people have sent on Remind do not show up in my email, so that I am unaware of them until I go on to the Remind site, which I do not do on a daily basis. If you need to contact me please either send a comment on the classroom blog or email me at hicksol@dearbornschools.org and I will respond the next school day after I read the message.
Thank you,
Mrs. Hickson
Friday’s DIA Trip.
Hi all!!!
Please find below the list of adults joining us on the DIA trip on Friday. I had a huge amount of parents willing to join us. I took the chaperones from the list of students who did not have an adult at our last skating field trip, in the order in which they offered to go. Please understand that I would love to take you all, however Mrs. Doman has asked us to limit our chaperones to 5 per classroom due to the large amount of students going. Thank you all for volunteering. We will be going on other trips this year and I will always give those that did not go yet this year the first chance.
Yara- Mrs. Daoud
Katherine- Mrs. Dunn
Batoul- Meemo Dakroub
Alex- Mrs. Fradkin
Owen- Mr. Strieff
I will send a note home with your student tomorrow giving you all important information. Please contact me as soon as possible if you cannot go so that I can give your spot to another adult.
