We’ve been comparing and contrasting the needs, adaptations and habitats of different animals this year. A habitat is the natural environment in which an animal usually lives (fish in the ocean, bears in the forest, penguins in the South Pole, etc.). Adaptationsare special characteristics that animals have developed in order to survive in their habitats. Pick at least one animal and use reference books and the Internet to learn about your animal’s natural habitat and adaptations. After you’ve finished your research, you will create a diorama of your animal(s) habitat. A diorama is like a stage set made from a cardboard box with no lid (shoe boxes work great). To create a diorama, you turn the box on its long side and cover the background (bottom of the box) with painted or colored scenery. Then, you place figures and objects in front of the background like characters and props on a stage. You can also build one out of wood!
Requirements
In addition to creating your diorama you must write an essay explaining why it is important to protect habitats and discuss the habitat you chose to create. Include details and a discussion about the organisms you include as well as the biotic and abiotic aspects of their ecosystem. Your diorama will be displayed in the lobby along with your essay!
This project will earn you 10 extra credit points on your lowest summative exam!
Due Date: Friday, March 23
