School Closure Expectations

Hello parents,

For the next 3 weeks students will be working online due to statewide school closures. It is an expectation that students are working on online assignments Monday through Friday per district guidelines.

Each week, of the three week closure, the third grade team will send a list of assignments that students need to complete per subject area. As a parent, you are also responsible to make sure your child is completing the assigned tasks. We will post on the blog weekly, so please check blog every Monday for a new set of assignments for your child to complete. If you have any questions, you may send us a message on the blog or via email. Please allow a few days for response due to high volume of parent communication.

Every student has IXL and RAZ kids log-ins and have been using them. If students are unsure of login and password it is an expectation of the parents that they contact the teacher to obtain login information. Supplies needed will be an electronic device to access assignments, and a writing journal.

We are working as parents and a third grade team at River Oaks to ensure learning continues throughout this situation. We hope everyone stays safe and continues their growth in learning academics.

Module 5 Study Guide

Please download and print study guide for students that are absent. The test will be Tuesday, March 17th.

Reminders for Week 3-9

Hello parents,

This is going to be a crazy, busy week!

-For math, we have lessons 27-30. Thursday, I will send home the study guide for module 5. The test will be on Tuesday 3-17. This is the hardest module for the year. Thank you for your support and patience for this module. If your child is still struggling, remember IXL is a great resource to practice fractions.

-We are continuing using context clues for fiction and non-fiction texts. This week we are starting some M-STEP practice. I will share a link with you if you would like to practice.

-For writing, we are working on Text-Dependent Analysis (TDA). This means answering questions in writing based on the text.

-For social studies, we are starting a new unit on the Government of Michigan. This unit will allow students to make connections during our Lansing trip.

-Please send in the permission slips and money for the field trip to Troy Historic Village. If you don’t want your child go, please write that on the slip and return it. I have too many chaperones for this trip, so I have asked or will ask a few parents to switch chaperoning for a different trip. I will let you know soon if you will be going on this trip or Lansing.

-Wednesday, March 11 will be Bingo for Books from 5:30-6:30. I only had 2 students turn in the forms. It is a fun and FREE event to get FREE books!! I will be there with my boys.

-This week is book fair. If you would like to volunteer, call Ms. Sandi. We will browse today for books then purchase on Thursday.

  • Friday will be a half day. Dismissal is at 11:45. Spelling test will be Thursday 3-13. Friday will be our classroom bees. The top 3 spellers will move onto the 3rd grade bee and then those top 3 will be in the school bee. If your child is absent, there will be no make-ups.

For the Spelling Bee, you want to practice with your child the following directions:

-Repeat the word
-Spell the word with appropriate capitalization, hyphenation, apostrophes, etc.
-Repeat the word again
-Wait for your response- “Correct” or “That is incorrect”. If incorrect, give them the
correct spelling (Unless you are down to the final two, if so, call the other
students and have them spell the word. If correct, give them a second word and if
spelled correctly they win! If incorrect, tell both the correct spelling and resume
the bee, giving the first student a new word.) I sent a kindergarten video out on
the 3 rd which shows this process at the end of the video if you need clarification
on this process.)

The student may ask for a sentence or a repetition of the word. The student can begin
to spell, stop one time and then continue to spell the word, or restart from the beginning
of the word, but they must restate the letters in the same order as when they first
uttered them- they must not say the word before they continue to spell it. This is
called retracing. For example “Cat, C- A, pause C- A- T, Cat” is acceptable but “Cat, C-
A, pause K- A- T” is not. They cannot pause and restart more than once. They cannot
start to spell, then ask for a repetition or a sentence. If they do, they have forfeited. You
as the announcer cannot EM- pha- size any part of the word when you say it. If so, the
word must be thrown out and a new word given.
If the student spelled the word correctly, They remain standing and you move on to the
next student.
If the student spelled the word incorrectly, they sit and are no longer in the bee. They do
not come up again for the next round, They do not start over in the next level of the bee.

Spelling Test Postponed

Hello parents,

We had a surprise guest reader that took longer than planned. The spelling  test will be Monday 3-9-20. Also, I sent the social studies test home,  please sign and return.

Reminders for Week 2-24-20

Hello parents,

I hope you enjoyed the break! We are back to learning!

Some reminders/updates:

-For Daily 5, we are working on context clues. Which means when a student reaches a word they don’t know, they can look for clues in the text to find the meaning of the unknown word. They can practice this skill on IXL under Vocabulary F.F. There are 3 skills to work on. Once mastered, they can go up to 4th grade or if they are struggling back to 2nd.

-For math, we will be doing lesson 14 through 18. Lessons 19 and 20 are extra but please have your child complete it for extra practice. They can try their best. The packet is due Monday 3-2-20.

-For social studies, we are learning how Michigan was being developed based on the economic activities of farming, mining, lumbering and manufacturing.

-For writing, we are writing opinion/descriptive pieces using the book “The Best Part of Me”. Each student chose what is their best part of them and why.

-Please make sure your child is reading daily for at least 30 min. Remember RAZ kids is an AMAZING resource that should not be forgotten.

-If you have any questions, please let me know 🙂
