Winter Break the week of February 17th

Students will be working on IXL and Raz-Kids over winter break. They will also be working on measuring and creating angles with protractors for extra practice. They are expected to read over the break as well. We will be having a mid-module assessment the week we return from break so they need that extra practice with measuring angles. I hope everyone enjoys the week off!

Cultural Night

River Oaks PTA will be hosting the first annual cultural night on April 16, 2020 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm and they need YOUR help! To make this an amazing and diverse event, they need to put our efforts together to create a memorable night for our students, families and staff. There will be FREE food, music and entertainment!

We want to create a gallery walk/exhibit showing different countries. Each family can create a display board, bring food and/or artifacts that represent a country and share its interesting cultural facts. You can even represent a country that you’re not from.

In addition, every grade level will be assigned a continent and every class will represent a country. Your child will be part of a class project in which they will conduct research and learn about the assigned country. Come see their work!

It doesn’t stop there! We will also have a fashion show where students and parents can show off the cultural wear. Clothing must be school appropriate.

But wait! Do you own instruments and want to sign/perform in front of the school to represent your country? Do you know how to do Henna Tattoos? Please call Ms. Sandi at 313-827-6750 for more information.

To participate in this event, please fill out the form coming home soon and return to the school by Friday January 24th. We will contact you on the phone number below for further questions.

We need parents to bring in food to taste from your country. Please help us to make this a great family event.

Raz-Kids and IXL

My class has logins for both Raz-Kids and IXL and should be utilizing these at home. They are great resources to practice reading comprehension and math skills we learn in school. The login information is taped in their planners and will need it to login on the websites. Please make sure your child is using these resources.

End of School Year Information

Dear parents,

I can’t believe the year is almost over! It is a bitter-sweet moment when the school year is wrapping up. It was a pleasure working with you and your child. I am proud of the hard work your child has achieved this year. Remember, every year will get harder. It is important to show your child the importance of school and the reasons why. It is never too early to start talking about future goals. If you would like to send me a message with some pros and cons for this year that would be great! As an educator, I like to reflect on my teaching and communication. Any feedback will allow me to grow as a teacher and person 🙂

Just a few reminders for the upcoming weeks:

-NWEA testing is complete.

-This will be the last week for spelling test and the test will be Friday, May 31st.

– Science study guide will go home Tuesday and the test will be Thursday May 30th.

-Homework from now until the last day of school is reading for 20 minutes and working on math facts. IXL is a great resource to use as well.

-The following week: June 3, 4 and 5 will be off. School resumes June 6. It is important that your child attends school until the very last day. We will continue teaching until the last day.

-Field day is June 10th and if it rains, the make-up will be June 12th. We NEED parent volunteers. If you would like to volunteer let me know or call Ms. Sandi at 313-827-6750. For field day, students don’t need lunches because the school will provide lunch. Make sure students are dressed according to weather. Students need to bring a bag with a change of clothes and towel, in case they get too wet from the water activities.

-The last day of school will be Friday, June 14th which is a half day. Dismissal is at 11:45. If you are traveling earlier than June 14th, please let me or the office know.

-3rd grade team decided to send summer packets so students can maintain their learning stamina. Students will bring a folder filled with many scholastic magazines to read and answer comprehension questions. In addition, we sent a math packet with a calendar of daily activities. Students will receive a plastic sleeve and erasable marker so they can practice their fluency on multiplication and division. Since the students made so much growth, we didn’t want them to regress (back slide) with their multiplication facts. As you know, this is a lifetime skill that needs to be mastered! Taking your child to the library to check out books is another activity.

If you have any questions and would like to contact me, please email me at alsaidn@dearbornschools.org

Thank you for being a great support for your child’s learning and enjoy the summer break 🙂

Sincerely,

Ms. Alsaidi

3rd Grade Trip to Lansing

Dear Families,

On Tuesday, April 9, 2019 your child will have the opportunity to go on an exciting field trip to our state capitol. Please note that the field trip will be the second day back from spring break. This trip is offered as enrichment to our social studies curriculum. As part of our study this year, we have been learning about Michigan’s history and our Federal government. While in Lansing, we will tour both Capitol and the Michigan Historical Museum.

Due to the travel time needed to get to Lansing, we will leave school around 7:20 amand return at 3:15 pm, in time for regular dismissal. You need to provide transportation to school. Please have your child at school no later than 7:00 am. We will be traveling on buses with bathrooms.

Students and parents who join us will need to bring a bagged lunch that day. We hope that many parents will be able to chaperone. The tours ask us to have a chaperone for every five students, so about 4-5 chaperones per class. If you are a chaperone you must be registered with the school office and background check all cleared. The process takes 2 weeks. Please call Ms. Debbie, if you have any questions about the process.

Students are able to bring disposable cameras, if they choose. But they may not bring iPods, iPads, video games, cell phones, etc. Cameras that are part of cell phones are not allowed. Also, please do not send snacks for the bus ride.

Please return the attached permission slip by March 22, 2019. If your child is unable to attend, please write, “My child will not be attending the field trip” on the permission slip, sign and return. Students must follow the River Oaks expectations and core values to be part of this exciting opportunity. If you have any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Sincerely,

Ms. Alsaidi
