Changes in Digital Learning for the Weeks Ahead!

Dear Parents and Students,

As you know the plan for continued learning hasbeen developed and the expectations for teachers and students have changed. Superintendent Dr. Maleyko has sent all families the expectations for the coming weeks. It is also translated in Arabic for anyone that needs it. Students will be graded on some assignments and there will be a 4th marking period report card. I will also be communicating and checking in with students at least 2 times a week through their school email. If they forget their school email, YOU MUST LET ME KNOW, because they will need it to get to their assignments.

For this week, we are doing things differently. Students will be expected to log in to MobyMax on Clever on the dearbornschools.org  website to access all their assignments. The directions for that are below:

Directions on how to access Moby Max:

1. Go to www.dearbornschools.org , at the very top is the Home link, click on that and scroll down to student portal and click on it.

2. You will see a big blue box on the page that says Clever, click on that. You will need your student ID and password to login. It will be your 200… or 201… number. For example, if your number is 20011234, you will need to type it in with the @dearbornschools.org. If you forget your password, send us a message on class dojo or our email.

3. You will need to scroll down until you find the green box that says MOBY MAX.

4. Find the Announcements and Tasks icon on the top to read the announcement of what you need to be working on for the week.

5. After you have read what you need to work on, you can find the assignment tab and see the assignments that are assigned for you to do. Remember, not all the assignments will be listed on the assignment tab, but it will all be on the announcement and tasks page. If you get confused, please ask us for help.

Report Cards for Marking Period 3

The Elementary Report Cards for Marking Period 3 are currently being processed and will be available to parents in ParentConnect, Monday April 6, 2020. Following is some information on how parents can access report cards data in MIStar ParentConnect. Please note that if you have more than one child, you should be able to see data for all your children and you do not need separate logins for the different schools (if your children attend more than one school).

How do parents login to ParentConnect? To login to ParentConnect, parents need their PIN and password; this is how it is obtained: Parents go to the Dearborn Schools’ website (dearbornschools.org) and then the ParentConnect link. If they don’t know the login info, they click the (Need Your Login Information) link and it will prompt them to enter their email address (as provided to the school and entered in MIStar), and then click Submit. This process emails them their PIN and Password. After logging in, click on the “report card marks” module.

If you need further assistance, please feel free to reach out.

Hope you are staying safe and healthy.

Remote Learning- Week of April 13-17 (Week 4)

Dear Parents and Students,

We hope that everyone had a relaxing spring break and that you and your family are healthy and safe at home. For our fourth week of remote learning we have made some changes based on what we have learned so far. We do know that the district will have a plan to submit to the state very soon and that our remote learning will change in some ways. Because we have a better understanding about the time students should spend on school work, we are including a new sample schedule. Use this suggested time to plan your child’s day of learning at home. The assignments the students will have are smaller and focused on one objective for each content area. This does not mean they are easier.

As a reminder for students, we are including some of the expectations for fourth grade here. Please discuss these with your child. It will not be new information but a review of what we have taught from the first day of school.

Sample Schedule: it is recommended that fourth grade students work remotely for three hours. Please remember that students do not need to sit and work for three hours without stopping. Brain breaks and physical activity are important. Work may be completed in any order.

Math: 60 minutes total

Assignment 1: 25 minutes

5 – 7 minutes for brain break/physical activity

Assignment 2: 25 minutes

5 – 7 minutes for fact practice

ELA: 90 minutes total

Kidsa-z (Raz-Kids): 30 minutes focused reading and answering questions

5 – 7 minutes brain break/physical activity

IXL Reading skills practice: 15 minutes

Spelling: 10 minutes practice daily

Writing: IXL skills practice for 10 minutes; 20 minutes for writing assignment

Science/Social Studies: 30 minutes

Spend 15 minutes on science and 15 minutes for social studies every day.

4th Grade Assignments and Expectations

Math: IXL Topic D, only lessons 30 and 31 are to be completed with a score of 85% or better by Friday, April 17.

Students need to show all their work. The two lessons for this week will require students to use paper and pencil to solve multi-digit multiplication problems and to solve word problems. This is not new content but review.

Reading Assignment 1: continue to read leveled books on kidsa-z.

Students should pass the quiz the first or second time at the very most. Reading carefully for understanding is really important.

The constructed response questions are not optional but required. Answers here should be written in complete sentences, use correct capitalization and punctuation and have evidence from the text to support the response. One sentence answers are not acceptable for 4th grade.

Reading Assignment 2: IXL only Main Idea A1 and A2 are to be completed with a score of 85% or better by Friday, April 17.

Writing Assignment 1:  IXL only Topic U1 (sentence variety) is to be completed with a score of 85% or better by Friday April 17.

Writing Assignment 2: Scholastic News article and opinion response. Read through this scholastic news and then complete an opinion letter to an elected official (think president, governor, or mayor) about the debate article “Is it OK to Swim With Manatees?”. The model for the letter is below. You can either type in a google document and then share it with me or write it on a paper and send me a picture. This is due by Friday, April 17th.

Spring Break-Week of April 6-10

Hello parents,

We hope that all of you are well and staying safe. Next week is our scheduled spring break, so our routine will change slightly. The fourth grade team would like to encourage all students to continue to read at least 30 minutes every day over the break. You will not receive messages from us during the week of April 4 – April 12.  We hope that you will stay healthy and be able to spend time doing fun activities with your children while still adhering to social distancing. We really miss teaching all of our students and look forward to eventually getting back to our classrooms. Happy Spring!
