Week of January 8-12

Happy New Year!  It is so nice to see all the smiling faces and hear all about the fun that was had over the break!  I hope everyone enjoyed time with family even with the freezing cold temperatures!

I am giving the students my thank you cards for all the fantastic and generous gifts I received!  I feel it is already a gift that I get to spend each day with your children!

Please remember to send your child with snowpants, boots, hats and gloves.  We will be going outside as long as the temperature is reasonable.  They loooove to play in the snow, so it is great fun if we can get outside!  The fresh air does their body and brain good!!

This week we are learning:

Spelling–This week pattern is the /ur/ spelled with er, or, ir or ur.  We also have descriptive, organize, audience and optimist as our word of the week.

Daily 5/CAFE–We are finishing up this week with chapter books for literature circles if students have not already done so.  Most groups will be working on a culminating activity using the strategies they practiced.  We will also be doing some work with mythology by looking at themes and characters, doing comparing and contrasting.   We may also be starting inferencing.

Writer’s Workshop–We will be brainstorming ideas for our New Year’s Resolutions.  Students will then be writing their own resolutions and setting goals for themselves.

Math–We are moving on to larger multiplication.  We will begin by looking at patterns in multiples of ten.   Students will then learn different strategies for solving multi-digit multiplication problems.  IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT STUDENTS KNOW THEIR BASIC FACTS IN ORDER TO MAKE THE LARGER MULTIPLICATION FASTER AND EASIER.   We will continue the timed tests, but will not be practicing the facts in class.

Science/Social Studies–We are starting the week with an activity on why snow is white and will then move on to Social Studies.  Students will be learning about human/environment interaction.

Have a great week!

Week of December 18-22

Reminders:

Please remember to have your child bring snowpants and boots!  Anytime we are allowed, we will have recess outside and the kids love the snow!!

Wednesday—Late Start

Friday–Our holiday party–1:00-1:45

Sing-a-long in the Gym 2:30-3:30

We are learning:

Spelling–Due to the Snow Day and Field trip last week, I postponed the Spelling test until tomorrow.  We will then be using holiday words in our writing for our words this week.  No Test on Friday though!

Daily5/CAFE–This week we are finishing up with our book club books and are working on our individual roles within the groups.  Students are working on summarizing, asking questions, being word wizards and real life connectors.

Writer’s Workshop—We are finishing up our narrative/opinion pieces about a possible change in Santa’s suit.  Students wrote 4 four paragraphs and included 3 pieces of evidence to support the position.  They wrote it in narrative form though, to make it more fun.  They have turned out sooo cute!  Some students are working on typing their stories.  They are hanging outside the classroom if you want to take a look!

Science–Students have been using their Claim, Evidence, Reasoning to perform different science experiments that explore energy.  We will be doing a couple more activities this week and will then move back to Social Studies.

Math–MATH TEST UNIT 4 on Thursday.  Study Guide will come home tonight and tomorrow, but we will be doing it in pieces, so please make sure it comes back.  We will be reviewing conversions for measurement (standard and metric) before the test.

Have a wonderful week!

(No Title)

Today (or Monday, for those who left early) a note is coming home about our holiday gift exchange.  We are going to be discussing the traditions of the holiday, but will also include traditions of other holidays that other students celebrate.

The gift exchange is optional, but just something fun to include.  If you choose not to participate, that is fine.  We will be doing different activities throughout the week!

Have a great weekend!!
