Hour of Code is Here!

Students are learning to write computer programs using code.  Hour of Code teaches computer coding using block.  Students arrange blocks of code to make the program run the way they want it to.  Students use Minecraft, Star Wars, Dance Party, Ice Age, and other programs to learn the techniques of computer programming.

Ms. Knaus’ class is doing a great job!

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving break. Hard to believe that tomorrow is December already!  We have been doing an author study on Jan Brett, and focusing on her books Gingerbread Baby, The Wild Christmas Reindeer, and her newest one The Snowy Nap.  Check out her website, which can be found under that class links on the right side of my blog page.

Next week we will be starting Hour of Code!  Students will be learning how to write computer programs using the program Code.org.  We started practicing this week by using Code Avengers and made a tiger that roars, a frog that croaks, and a bird that flies! Code Avengers can be found on the link to the right of my blog also, and Code.org can be reached by our students by clicking on the blue CLEVER button on the left of the Dearborn Public Schools homepage.

Lindbergh students helping our community

Community Service Projects

The students of Lindbergh have decided to do two community service projects.  This helps out the community by us giving to those that are in need. We are sharpening our saw by helping our hearts.  Please consider giving to one of our projects.

  1. Dearborn Animal Shelter

The Dearborn Animal Shelter is located on Michigan Ave. behind the Police Station.  They take care of many unwanted pets. Due to the amount of animals they need our help.  The shelter is in need of many new items to help take care of the animals. Here is a list of a few needed items for dogs and cats. Cats need dry Purina, dishes and cat clay litter- non clumping. Dogs need Nylon 6 ft. collars, pedigree(food). Both cats and dogs need new fleece blankets, toys and treats. We are collecting until the end of February. Put the donations in the box by the Auditorium.

  1. Ronald McDonald House

The Ronald McDonald House of Ann Arbor provides a “home away from home” for families of children experiencing a serious illness or injury required hospitalization in the Ann Arbor area.

The Ronald McDonald House needs pop tabs to turn in and they can recycle them for money.  Please bring your pop tabs to school and put them in your classroom container. We are collecting until the end of May.

End of the first card marking

It’s hard to believe that it’s already the end of the first card marking!  The school year is one quarter done.  Students have been working hard on their reading and technology skills.  Everybody is now checking out books from the media center.  Students are doing well on their computer keyboarding skills, both on Chromebooks and desktop computers.   This week we’re exploring the NASA.GOV website in preparation of an assignment next week.

Have a great weekend!

Don’t forget to move your clocks back an hour tomorrow night for daylight savings time!

Fall Fun!

Getting ready for the Haunted School at Lindbergh tonight!

Students have been doing very well working keyboarding skills.  It’s important that they know the keyboard of their computer, so they can spend more of their time working on assignments and telling us what they know and less time trying to find the letters. We use a few programs including Typing.com, Typing Rockets, and the seasonal Ghost Typing.  We’re also working on developing computer mouse skills such as dragging and dropping, on the desktop computers as well as Chromebooks.

Interspersed with technology is seasonal literature with titles such as “Room on the Broom”, “Space Case”, and “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything”.

Our students are doing great work!

Many students and teachers have asked about the MyON site that we used to use last year.  It was available to us as an app, through the Dearborn Home Page, using CLEVER.  Unfortunately we are not able to access MyON this year.  The website is still available but users have to pay for their own account.

MEL.ORG, the Michigan Electronic Library site is a wonderful site for student and family use.  It has a wide variety of information and sources.  Unfortunately the BookFlix site is not available to us through MEL.ORG this year.  If you have a Dearborn Public Library card you can access the site through there, but it’s not available through the MEL.ORG site as it was previously.

I’m looking for a few other sites that would work as replacements for these sources.

Meanwhile, keep reading- both traditional books and on line!

Great week!

The 2018-2019 school year is off to a great start!  Students have been learning classroom and library checkout procedures.  Students at both schools will begin to check out books next week.  Students are getting acquainted with the computers, learning their usernames and passwords, and learning proper use of the computers.

We’re starting book check-out a little later this year, sorry for the delay.  We’ll be starting at both Lindbergh and Maples next week, September 24.  Thanks for your patience!

I’ve had several questions about the MyOn reading program we’ve used for the past several years.  Students have been looking for MyOn through Clever, on the district homepage. Unfortunately it is not available through the district this year.
