Spelling

Dear kindergarten families,

Spelling will begin this week. Your child will have 8 spelling words each week. Four of the words will fit a pattern. For example, this week we will study the ‘–at’ word family. Your child will be given hot words within the –at family to study on Monday. These are the words that we will focus on in the classroom. The cold words will be given to them when they receive their spelling test. They will look different than the hot words, but will still come from the same word family. For example, I might give them the word ‘hat’ to study, but give them the word ‘sat’ on the test. The purpose of the cold words is to see if your child can apply the studied pattern for the week. The last four words will be sight words that we have practiced in the classroom. A spelling packet with the spelling words will go home each Monday and will need to be completed and turned in each Friday.  Please have your child complete one page a day. We will have a test every Friday, unless there is no school on Friday. In that case, we will have the test on Thursday.

Thank you,

Ms. Abulhassan

Winter Break

Dear families,

I have provided a winter packet with practice sheets for your child to complete during our winter break. This packet should not take too much time to complete.  A suggestion would be to complete a sheet a day. The sheets do not have to be completed in the order I have them. For example, you might choose to complete a math sheet one day and a reading comprehension sheet the next.  In addition, please remind your children to read every day and practice the word cards in their reading bags.

Also, an index card was placed in the back of each folder with your child’s username and password for IXL and Raz Kids. Letters explaining how to navigate the websites were sent home. Remind your children not to misplace the card because they will need to use it throughout the school year. Your support is always appreciated.

As we embark on a new year, I want to take a moment to wish everyone a happy and fulfilling year. I am blessed to be sharing this year with all of you and your children. I hope you have noticed the tremendous growth they have already made! Their success would not be possible without all of you. THANK YOU! Through difficulties and triumphs, I have no doubt that they will continue to develop into bright, respectful, and loving children. May they always fill your lives with pure joy, this year and every year. Happy New Year! I hope you all have a wonderful break!

Sincerely,

Ms. Abulhassan

Websites to Use at Home

Dear Families,

I sent home information on how your child can log into IXL and Raz Kids. These websites have educational reading and math activities that your child can do at home. Please help your child log into these websites and have them practice logging in by themselves. It is important that your child is exposed to using technology to enhance learning. I encourage no more than 30 minutes a day. Please remind your children not to lose the cards that I gave them with their usernames and passwords. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions or concerns. As always, thanks for your continued support.

Have a great winter break!

Sincerely,

Ms. Abulhassan

QR Reading Codes

Dear Families,

Today I placed a set of 4 QR codes for books to read at home in your child’s reading bag.

Students simply select the book they want to listen to, and then scan the coordinating QR code. All links go through safeshare so there is no worrying about unwanted advertisement.

You can scan your QR code by using your devices camera (phone, tablet) or download a QR scanner.

I hope this motivates your child with his/her reading at home. Please ask questions as your child listens to the story to ensure he/she understands key details/events.

Thank you!

Ms. Abulhassan
