Unit Test

Fellow Vikings,

We began the Number Systems Unit Test today in class.  About half of all students finished, so we will be continuing our testing on Monday.  If you finished the test today I do have you test graded.  However, due to testing security, I cannot post your grade on Student Connect until everyone has finished on Monday.  I apologize that this occurs over the weekend.  I know that it can be hard to wait for a grade.  Thank you for your patience and understanding.

No Khan Academy Assignments!?

Dear Vikings,

This week, I have posted no Khan Academy “assignments” on the Khan Academy website.  You still must complete one hour of practice time on Khan Academy this week, so here’s what to do.  From the homepage choose the “negative numbers” link, and choose any topic in that section.  There are plenty of topics, and they’re all good practice for what we’re working on in class.  Happy math-ing!

Winter Wonderland

Fellow Vikings,

I know the weather this week has been amazing, but it’s a terrible feeling missing so many days of math class, isn’t it?  Don’t fret, don’t fuss, look see, you can always keep your math skills fresh with Khan Academy!  No matter how many (or how few) days of school we have together this week you still must have one hour of practice time completed by the time you finish watching the Super Bowl on Sunday.  Don’t forget!

Also, no matter when we have school, we will be NWEA testing this week.  Today (Tuesday) we are taking NWEA math.  The next school day will be the NWEA reading test, and then the following two school days will be science and language usage.

Enjoy, yet another, strangely scheduled week!

Mr. Zimmer

It’s not exactly a snow day, but…

Vikings,

Enjoy your (now even longer) MLK weekend! A broken boiler system has resulted in school being closed for the day, which means that you don’t need to do any math today! However, as long as you have some extra free time, why don’t you consider doing some Khan Academy to keep your math brain sharp? We don’t know how long the boiler repair will take, so maybe you might like to do a little Khan Academy tomorrow as well. Because, regardless of when we may see each other in person again, you still need to have your full hour of Khan Academy finished by the time you go to bed on Sunday. Doesn’t today seem like a wonderful time to get a big chunk knocked off? Hopefully we’ll be able to hold real math class soon!

Mr. Zimmer

Have a Little Free Time, Try Khan Academy!

Winter break is all snowflakes and lazy mornings until the boredom finally sets in.  Honestly, where do you see yourself at 1:30 pm on December 27th?  Once you run out of exciting things to do why don’t you try some Khan Academy?  You can keep your math skills sharp, earn credit towards your grade in class, and you’ll be able to humble-brag to all your friends when the break is over.  Keep your skills top notch and look for the assignments I posted!  Have a safe, happy, mathy winter break.

Welcome to Number Systems

Vikings,

We just started our second unit, Number Systems!  We will cover all four operations ( +, -, x, and /) with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions.  We’ll even thrown in some greatest common factor, least common multiple, and negative numbers just for fun.  This unit covers a wide array of skills you will use for years to come, so be present every day with your best effort.  Happy math-ing Vikings!

A Reminder from Principal Jebril

This is a reminder that Halloween costumes, of any kind, are NOT permitted at O.L.Smith on Halloween Day, Wednesday, October 31st.
Students should not bring masks, make-up or hair products to school. Anyone found with these items will have them confiscated.  Gum and candy are not permitted in the building, as usual. Please save your trick-or treating for the evening festivities.
This has been and continues to be the rule at O.L.Smith.
Students may wear orange and black but please follow the school dress code, outlined in the student handbook sent home during the summer. We will treat Wednesday as a regular school day where LEARNING is our focus and students are expected to fully participate in each class throughout the day.
