Week of November 10, 2014

Dear Families,

It sure was great to see everybody yesterday at Lindbergh’s Holiday Boutique!  Our class “Mad Science” basket turned out fantastic! A special thanks to our Homeroom Moms:  Ian’s mom, Isaac’s mom and Sebastian’s mom for organizing our basket this year! Thanks to everyone to donated money towards our basket.  In the past, our Holiday Boutique basket helps our class receive a couple hundred dollars to spend on our kindergartners!  Although I am not sure who was the winner of our basket,  they sure were lucky!!

Here’s what you need to know for this week:

  • Monday:  Letter books will be sent home to work on the C c page.  If your child didn’t return their library book last week, please do so today.  Note:  we had no school last Tuesday so we didn’t check out new books last week.  Please wear gym shoes.
  • Tuesday:  Media Center, music  and art today!
  • Wednesday:  Late Start!  Please arrive to school at 9:35 a.m.
  • Thursday:  Parent/Teacher conferences begin tonight.  Each conference will be 20 minutes in length.  There is lots of information to discuss so please be on time.  You will receive your child’s report card and NWEA test scores at your scheduled conference.
  • Friday:  Popcorn Day!  If your child would like to purchase a bag of popcorn, please send in 25 cent.  Return letter books.  Wear gym shoes.

Thanks to everyone who brought in a white binder last week.  Our class will be busy working on our Data Collection binders this week so we can share them at conferences!

Have a great week!

The Floating S

One last thing!  A group of kindergarten scientists in our class noticed a Mysterious S floating in their petri-dish yesterday.  Isaac’s aunt was able to take a picture of it.  Can you find it?

image1 (3)

Why does the “s” float?  The “s” floats because it is made of edible ink and does not dissolve in water like the skittle candy does.

If you are trying to find ways to get rid of your child’s Halloween candy without actually eating it, there are tons of candy experiments you can find on-line!  Good Luck!

Mad Science!

Hello Families,

I hope that you are enjoying the afternoon with your kindergartner!

Yesterday our class did a “skittles science experiment.”  We put four different colored skittles in a petri dish filled with warm water.  Then we recorded our observations in our science notebooks.  Here is what we observed:

image1mad science-skittles 028 mad science-skittles 030 mad science-skittles 003 - Copy mad science-skittles 004 - Copy mad science-skittles 005 - Copy mad science-skittles 006 - Copy mad science-skittles 007 - Copy mad science-skittles 008 - Copy mad science-skittles 012 mad science-skittles 013

Our class of scientists wondered if we would get the same results if we put skittles in a different liquid.  This morning Charlie brought in some vinegar.  Here is what we observed:

We noticed that the vinegar changed colored faster than the warm water!

Thanks to Isaac’s aunt, Ameena’s mom and Charlie’s mom for helping us yesterday!  Thanks to Isaac’s aunt for taking the pictures!

Gotta get back to work on the report cards!

Check this out!

Hello Families,

Take a look at all the students who brought  back their Monthly Reading Homework today.  These students picked out a reading charm necklace or bracelet today.  Each month after returning the completed reading form, they will receive another charm to add to their bracelet or necklace.  Make sure that these special charms are placed in a safe spot so they  can bring their necklaces or bracelets back to school on Monday, December 1st so they can add to it.  Keep up all the good reading at home.

Plus, all students who returned the form today will receive a special coupon from Pizza Hut for a free personal pizza.  Coupons will be sent home on Wednesday in your child’s red folder.

A Huge Halloween Thanks!

Dear Families,

I just wanted to thank everyone who helped make our Halloween party a success yesterday. Our team of family volunteers transformed our ordinary classroom into a glow-in-the-dark lab in less than twenty minutes.  It was a spectacular sight!  Thanks to everyone who donated materials, food or treats.  If your child didn’t already tell you about our glow party, ask them to tell you about it, especially what was their favorite station and why.  We will be working on opinion writing next during Writer’s Workshop and this is a great way to practice articulating our opinions!

Photos Needed:

If you have captured any photos during our Kindergarten Halloween Parade or party, please email them to me.  I would love to  post them on the blog.

Kindergarten Data Binders:

As a request from our Lindbergh office, we are asking for each student to bring in a  1” White 3-Ring Binder with a clear front “slip-in” pocket.  The purpose of this binder is to place your student’s goals and data charts.  It is Lindbergh’s intention of these binders to be passed along with your child as they go from grade level to grade level.  I will be sharing these binders with you at Parent Teacher Conferences so I need them by Friday, November 7.  Thanks again for your continued support!

Monthly Reading Homework:

This sheet was sent home in the beginning of the month where your child colored a pumpkin for reading each night.  It is due on Monday, November 3.  Please make sure that your child places it in their red folder over the weekend.   Your child will receive a November Reading Homework on Monday.  Start off the month on the right foot by reading tonight and tomorrow!  Good Luck!

Enjoy the weekend!

Halloween is almost here!

Dear Families,

On Friday, October 31, your child may wear their Halloween costume to school if they wish.  Please no masks or fake weapons!

Starting at around 9:00 a.m., the kindergartners will parade up and down the Lindbergh halls.  Parents are welcome to watch and take pictures, just not of me! 🙂

We will have our Halloween party in the morning from 9:30-11:00 a.m.  If you would like to volunteer to help us before/ during/after the party, please leave a comment below.  Thanks!

Your child will need an extra change of clothes.  They will change and place their costumes in their lockers after the party so they can be worry-free for lunch and gym.

If your child would like to bring a treat for when we trick or treat that would be great, but not necessary.  In years past, students brought in clever things that were not candy.

Here is what we need for our Halloween Party:  ( we have 25 students in our class)

25  Fruit cups- mandarin oranges
box of plastic spoons
Little plates
Napkins (lots!):)

12 apples-your choice of variety
2 containers of Caramel sauce/dip
Doughnut holes

Cheese and crackers

10 White  bags with handles for trick-or-treating
