Future Engineers!

Dear Families,

Look out Ford Motor Company!  We have future engineers ready to work.  Yesterday during our Mad Science session we asked the question “Which ball will go down the ramp the fastest?”  We wrote down our hypotheses in our science notebooks.  Take a look!

Next, we tested out our hypotheses!  We wondered which ball would be fastest?  The choices were a golf ball, marble, super ball and a ping pong ball.  After several tests, we found out that the golf ball was fastest down the ramp!  Scientist Sebby wondered if the golf ball won because of what lane it was in.  IMG_2264

So we tested each ball in each of the different lanes and the golf ball won each time.  We realized that it did not matter what lane the golf ball was in, it was still the fastest.  Many scientists thought it was because the golf ball was “heavier.”

Next, our scientists made their own ramps out of blocks and tested them out.

Hello Families,

Here is what you need to know for our kindergarten class this week:

Lunch choices for Monday are Ravioli ( chef’s choice) and grilled cheese!

  • Monday:  Letter books will be sent home today.  We will be studying the letters G and g.  Please return library books to school if your child hasn’t already done so.  We did not check out books last week since we were on our field trip during our check out time.  Wear gym shoes!
  • Tuesday:  We will go to the Media Center, music and art today!
  • Wednesday:  We will go to music today.
  • Thursday:  Mad Science at 1:00 p.m.  If you are interested in helping us, please let me know!  Thanks!
  • Friday:  Letter books need to be returned.  Wear gym shoes

PBIS:

In order for your student to be invited to the PBIS Reward they must stay on green 80 percent of the month.  Since we have 15 school days in December, that means that they can’t move their clip more than 3 times.  Some students are already getting close.  Each morning, please remind your child to follow our classroom guidelines to BE SAFE, BE RESPECTFUL and BE RESPONSIBLE!  Our December reward party is Game Day and will take place on Friday, December 19th.  More info will be sent home soon.

Number Poems:  During conferences last month. several parents asked for the number poems we say in class to help while practicing writing numbers at home.  I thought every family might find them useful so look for them in your child’s red folder on Monday!

Here’s is what we will be studying this week in:

READING:  Retelling the beginning, middle and end of a story.

WRITING:  We are still writing  our opinions!  We have lots of opinions in our class!:)

MATH:  We are solving addition and subtraction word problems.

SOCIAL STUDIES: We are finishing up on our Social Studies project!  We have been learning all about needs and wants, goods and services and service workers.  Later in the week I will be administering the District Social Studies Assessment to your child.  The assessment covers the topics that we have been studying during our project.

SCIENCE:  We will begin our investigation of Force:  Pushes and Pulls!  Thanks to Martin’s family for sending in an excellent picture that demonstrates a push.

Here’s to a great week!

We went Krogering today!

Dear Families,

Have you ever taken your own children to Kroger’s and it seemed a bit hectic?  Well, our awesome chaperones came and helped 50+ kindergartners navigate through Kroger’s this morning.  The students reviewed what they knew about a variety of social studies concepts and went through the store looking for these things.  Take a look at some our our teams in action!

Week of November 24, 2014

Hello Families,

Although it will be a short week, it sure will be busy!  Today we had our first “King of ing!”  Take a look at Ameena!

November 24, 2014 014

In Social Studies we have been learning about Needs and Wants.  We have been discussing how we need to eat healthy foods.  Several students asked the important question of how do we know if something is healthy or not.  We started looking at labels of  some of our favorite snacks.

November 24, 2014 003

I put out a variety of snacks for the students to pick, some healthy some not. Zeinab was the only student to pick fruit over cookies or chips. Although it didn’t surprise me about the snack choices of kindergartners, it did surprise me when I took the leftover snacks to a staff meeting and many teachers picked the chips and cookies over the fruit!:)

November 24, 2014 011 November 24, 2014 010 November 24, 2014 009 November 24, 2014 008 November 24, 2014 007 November 24, 2014 006 November 24, 2014 005 November 24, 2014 004

We found out that many of our favorite foods have lots of sugar!   Tomorrow we will be actually measuring out how much sugar some of our favorite snacks have.  This project ties into our upcoming field trip to Kroger.  Thanks to everyone who brought in their field trip permission slip and money!  I haven’t had a chance to go through all the permission slips yet, but will let you know who will be coming to help us on Tuesday, December 2nd to our field trip to Kroger!  I will post our chaperones tonight or tomorrow!

  • Letter books will not be sent home this week due to the short week.
  • Words of the Week:   mom    dad
  • Please return library books for Tuesday.
  • In your child’s red folder tomorrow, students will bring home something  special for Thanksgiving.  Thanks to Thomas’s mom for helping me today with the Thanksgiving project.

Until next time…

Ms. Wright

Week of November 17, 2014

Hello Families,

Hope you had relaxing weekend!  Here is what you need to know for this week:

Monday:  Letter books will come home today.  We are working in the letters L and l this week.

Tuesday: Please return library books if you haven’t already done so.  We will go to the Media Center, music and art today.

Wednesday:  We have music today.  There are scheduled parent/teacher conferences today.

Thursday:  There are scheduled parent/teacher conferences today.

Friday:  Please return letter books today!

Our literacy framework is called Daily 5.  We started the fifth component today called Word Work.  During this time, students have the opportunity to practice important sight words.  Your child needs to learn these words so they will automatically recognize them while reading.  Since there is a huge range of abilities in kindergarten, some students  already know many of these words while other students know just a few.  Each week your child will take home a ring of cards in their book bag.  Please practice these words at home, while we will continue to practice at school.  If your child already knows how to read these words, then have them practicing writing these words. The ring of cards will need to be placed back in their book bag each night so we can use them the next day during Daily 5.  We will not begin formal spelling words or tests until the third card marking, sometime in the spring.

Week 1- Words of the Week

  • look
  • I
  • me
  • like
  • we
  • can

Lunch Recess:

At Lindbergh, we understand the importance of children getting plenty of exercise each day.  Please plan on your child to go outside for lunch recess unless the temperature is below 15 degrees.  If there is snow on the ground or grass your child needs to wear snowpants and boots in order for them to play in it.  Otherwise, students who are not wearing snowpants or boots will need to stay on the blacktop.  If your child gets wet during lunch recess, there will be no phone calls home for a change of clothes.  Please make sure your child has an extra change of clothes in their locker, in case they need it.

As always, thanks for your support!

Ms. Wright

PS  Due to your generosity, our Holiday Boutique basket brought in $290, which we can spend on our classroom.  Thanks so very much!

November 12, 2014

Dear Families,

Help!  We need some shopping papers or advertisements for tomorrow’s social studies lesson.  Examples : Kroger, Meijer’s or Target circulation papers.  The purpose is to be able to cut  pictures of “wants.”  Today the students were placed in teams and brainstormed “needs.”  Ask your child about things we need in order to live.  Each team did a fantastic job brainstorming together as well as working together as a group!

Many thanks!

Ms. Wright
