Week of January 12, 2015

Dear Families,

Hope all is well with you and your family!

Please help me welcome Wade to our classroom.  We are very excited to meet our new friend Wade tomorrow.  He is moving to Dearborn from Ohio.

Here is what you need to know for this week:

Letter of the Week:  O  o

Words of the Week:  are   what   do   dog

Monday:  Letter books will be sent home.  We are working on the O page.  Please make sure that your child writes down any sounds that they heard in the words/pictures they have selected on their O page.  The words do not need to be spelled correctly, but at this time of the year we are expecting them to hear the beginning/middle and ending sounds.  For example, if they glue a picture of an orange in their letter book.  Have your child say the word slowly and write down any sounds they hear.  It might be “ornj.”  Praise them for any sounds they do hear.  This will really help us during Writer’s Workshop.  Thanks for your support!  Wear gym shoes.  Return library books!

In Social Studies, we will be learning about our past. This will be done through creating time lines together in class.  To further learning about our own personal past, your child will be bringing home a “time line” project on Monday.   Your child’s time line project will be due on Wednesday, January 21.

Tuesday:  We will go to the media center, music and art today!

Wednesday:  Mad Science at 1:00 p.m.  Join us if you are available.  Please let me know as I can plan accordingly.  Thanks!

Thursday:  Mrs. Miller will be our guest teacher today.  I will be out of the building so I can attend the Science Leadership training.

Friday:  Return Letter books!

Assessments:  This week I will be assessing your child in reading and math. Therefore, I will not be seeing your child in their reading group.  Feel free to continue to use Raz-Kids for Nightly Reading Homework.  As soon as the assessments are completed, I will eagerly go back to seeing my reading groups!

Spelling:  In kindergarten, spelling starts in the third carding marking ( Monday, January 26th.)  I am looking for two volunteers who could come in for about an hour and help us with spelling.  I would need these volunteers to come in during our Daily 5 time, around 10:15 a.m. on Mondays.  Let me know if your interested.  Thanks!

That is all for now!

January 9, 2015

Hello Families,

I hope you are managing to stay warm these days!

Mad Science is being rescheduled to Wednesday, January 14 at 1:00 p.m.  If you can help us during that time, please let me know.  Thank you in advance.

Today we played a new math game called Top-It.  You may have remembered the same game called War.  The students worked in small groups as they played.  Each player picked a card from the top of the deck.  The player who had the highest number on his/her  card gets to keep the cards from the other players.  The player who had the most cards at the end of the game, wins.

A Few More Things!

Dear Families,

We had 20 students turn in the Nightly Reading Homework for the month of December!  Each student received a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut and another reading charm for their necklace.  Several students have lost their necklaces and would like to replace them.  The replacement cost is 50 cents each.  I don’t have many necklaces left.  Please help your child to find a safe spot to keep their necklace.

The January Nightly Reading Homework was sent home before the break.  We are now requiring 20 minutes of reading at home each night.  This time can include your child reading to you, you reading to your child, your child practicing the books in their book bag, reading on Raz-Kids, or practicing sight words on the ring of cards.

Raz-Kids:

Our subscription to Raz-Kids ran out during the month of December.  Thanks to our wonderful PTA and your basket donations, I was able to renew the subscription with our basket money from the PTA.  Several students mentioned that they were having trouble with Raz-Kids at home.  I had to change the settings on it.  Kindergarten students were trying to read levels at a fifth grade level.  Therefore, please have your child click on where it says “Reading Assignment!”  If you have any further trouble, let me know.

Lastly, Friday is Popcorn Day!  Please bring 25 cents if your interested!

Happy Holidays!

Dear Parents,

We sure had a terrific day!  Here is a look at the fun we had at our holiday party this morning.  Thanks to everyone who brought in party supplies!  Thanks to Ian’s mom, Tyler’s mom, Lydia’s mom, Kamyl’s nana, Aseel’s mom and dad, Jack’s mom and Charlie’s mom for helping today!  These helpers were awesome.  They set up for the party, they helped during the party, and when I turned around, the room was magically all cleaned up too!  The students were busy in 5 different stations.  Ask your child to tell you what they did!

Thanks for all of the special cards and gifts today!  I especially can’t wait to go shopping at Target!  The gift cards won’t last long in my wallet! 🙂

My gift to the students may have seemed a bit strange.  However, the students love writing on clipboards in class so I went on a mad search looking for Lindbergh red clipboards.  I hope they continue to do lots of writing over the holidays!

Also, please make sure that your child keeps their December behavior chart in their red folder.  I need them for their Data Collection Binders!

Have a great holiday!  Gotta run to Target!  🙂

Week of December 15, 2014

Dear Families,

Hope you are enjoying this Sunday morning with your family!  Here is what you need to know for this exciting week in kindergarten:

Social Studies District Assessment: I will be giving this assessment individually all week long.  Your child will need to know about needs (water, shelter, clothes, air, food) and wants (they are experts with wants:))  They will need to tell me if something is a good or a service.  We were reviewing this on Friday and everyone seemed like they were ready for the assessment.  Please practice with your child about these concepts at home.

Holiday Craft Donations:  We are asking for families to donate $1.00 to help pay for our Holiday craft supplies.  Please send it in as soon as possible so we can reimburse our Homeroom parents.  Thank you in advance!

  • Monday:  Letter books will go home today.  We will be studying the letters H  and h this week.  Please wear gym shoes.  Return library books for Tuesday.  Your child will get 4 new words of the week to put on their ring of cards.

PBIS REWARD INFO:  This month’s reward is Game Day!  If your child stayed on green 80 percent of the time in December, that means not moving their clip more than 3 times, they are invited.  They may bring in a game from home.  Please make sure that it is a game that they already know how to play.  Also, please make sure it is not a new game.  In the past, child have brought in a new game, and we spent much of the time punching out the pieces and figuring out how to play.  Make sure it is a game that is ready to be played.  Please make sure that your child’s name is labeled on the game.  Please no electronic games for kindergarten- second grade students.
