Week of April 11, 2017

Dear Families,

I hope you are tucked inside with your family on this cold April day.  Although it is a great day to work on a certain science experiment or start thinking of pictures that start with the letter Z for the letter book.  🙂

Here is what you need to know for this week:

Letter of the Week:  Z z

This week’s spelling words:  hit  lit  sit  fit

Monday:  Return book bags, spelling notebooks and library books.  We will go to gym and art.

Tuesday:  We will go to music and the Media Center.

Wednesday:  We will work on our Publishing Center books.

Thursday:  We will go to music.

Friday:  Please return library books.  We will go to gym and the computer lab.

Bridget’s Growth Update: Day 5 Results

IMG_0116

Bridget’s length is just a little over 4 inches today.  Her growth appears to be slowing down.

Science Fair Boot Camp Donation!

I need a few empty, plastic, clear, 2-liter pop bottles with tops for Science Fair Boot Camp.  If you could help us out, that would be wonderful.  I need them by Tuesday.

Thanks!!!

Ms. Wright

Bridget’s Growth Update

Dear Families,

Here are a few pictures of Bridget’s growth update for Day #4.  She is now exactly 4 inches (squares) long.

Thanks to my science helpers, Trevor and Trent, for helping me record today’s data!  Many students predicted that Bridget would be 4 inches today.  You can observe from the chart that Bridget’s growth is starting to slow down.

Here is a picture of a science board.  Thanks to Ruby’s mom for sending me the pictures of Charlie’s board from last year.

Some students wanted another measuring sheet ( the one with the one-inch squares) so I sent another one home yesterday in case you needed it.

Until tomorrow!

Students of the Month!

Dear Families,

Congratulations to Adam and Mohamad who  were selected as our Students of the Month!

Keep working hard and continue to make such great progress in class!

Bridget Update:  Day 3  Bridget is 3 1/2 inches long now.  We are going to work on our hypothesis later today.  While working on the hypothesis at home ask your child, “What do you think will happen and why?

Here is a sample:  I think the alligator in milk will grow longer because milk is healthy and makes me grow.”

Here are a couple of examples of completed boards from years past:

As you can see, there are many ways for your child to show their data.  Some students have taken pictures, some traced the alligators or use the provided data sheet.

Good Luck!

Ms. Wright

Tiger Day!

Dear Families,

Detroit_tigers_alternate_logo_tiger

Don’t forget to wear your Detroit Tiger gear today.  No worries if you don’t have any, wear navy blue or orange instead.  Bring a junkie snack to eat while we watch 30 minutes of the Tiger’s Opening game for our PBIS reward. But best of all, we are all watching it together since every child made this month’s reward!   Yahoo!!!!

Enjoy the day!

Ms. Wright

Growing Alligators

Dear Families,

It all started with the book Zach’s Alligator!

growing alligators 014

Lucky for us, we have a Zach in our class and he has an alligator!:)  In fact, your child should have two alligators.  Yes, the kindergarten Science Fair Boot Camp experiment was sent home yesterday.  Boy, were our kindergarten scientists ever excited!  Each day, I will model the experiment in class so your child should have a pretty good understanding of what to do each night.  The experiment takes 7 days  so you will want to start soon.  Yes, I will be taking “Bridget” the class alligator (and main character in the book) home over the weekend and continue to post it growth on the blog.  In the past, we have found that kindergartners have had trouble with  measuring each dinosaur.  However, before you know it that we become easier too.

Here is Bridget on Day 1:  She is measuring at 2 1/2 inches long. (Yes, she is smaller than the dinosaurs that were sent home!)

As a class, we came up with this question.  We already put it on the science board.

Day 3:  Bridget grew!!  She now is 3 inches long.

Tomorrow we will work on the hypothesis.

Stay tuned for Bridget’s progress.

Have fun!

FYI:  Please save the date for Thursday, April 21st:

Lindbergh’s 3rd Annual Science Fair Boot Camp from 5:30-7:00 p.m.  Science Fair Boot Camp is a vision I had 4 years ago to help get Lindbergh students excited about science.  This Wednesday, I will be modeling our Kindergarten science experiment for our kindergarten scientists.   We will be “growing alligators!”  The take-home packet will include everything you need.  Forget the days of when the parents did the science project for the science fair.  This time your child will be conducting this developmentally-appropriate science experiment.  I can’t wait for the fun to begin!!!

Thanks to Ruby’s mom, Adam’s mom, Aailyah’s mom and Yuan’s mom for reading to us!  You Rock!

Several students have been begging me to do a play in our class.  Zach’s grandma, Mrs. Bungee, came to our rescue and worked with a group of students so they could put on a play for us! This was a great way for students to work on reading with expression!  Thanks Mrs. Bungee!
