Week of November 21, 2016

Dear Lindbergh Families,

I hope you bundled up and had a chance to relax this weekend! Sorry for posting later than usual this Sunday. I guess I “sharpened the saw” a little too much today!:)

Conferences:  It was exciting to meet with everyone during conferences these last two weeks.  If you have any additional questions, please email me at wrightt1@dearbornschools.org.

Here is what you need to know for our short week in kindergarten:

Monday:  Please return Nightly Literacy Homework, Poetry Journals, and book bags today.  We will go to gym and art today.

My apologizes about library check-out last week.  There was a guest media secretary who apparently had heard how advanced Ms. Wright kindergartners were and allowed them to check out  chapter books.  Although I am sure you enjoyed reading War and Peace and Harry Potter with your kindergartner, please have your child return their library book tomorrow!

Tuesday:  We will have music with Mrs. Baloga.  Please make sure to check your child’s red folder today since something special for Thanksgiving will be sent home in it today.

Wednesday/ Thursday/ Friday:  No School- Be thankful for your amazing family and children!

Here are some quick pictures I took last week:

Here is Aston reading to the class. Look how he has the other children engaged! Great job Aston!

These kindergarten scientists love to mix colors during corners:

Fun making words during Word Work!

Last week, the students worked in small groups to design a domino path that would knock the most dominoes with a car or a bouncy ball.  Ask your child what happened.

Week of November 14, 2016

Dear Families,

I hope you are “Sharpening the Saw” on this gorgeous Sunday!

It sure was great to see so many of you yesterday at Lindbergh’s Holiday Boutique.  I hope you had a chance to see our amazing Mad Science Baskets.  If not, here they all are:

mad-science-basket

Thanks to our awesome Homeroom Moms- Aston’s mom, Dominic’s mom and Enna’s mom for putting in so much time and effort in creating this year’s basket.  Also, thanks to everyone who sent in donations.  The proceeds of our basket will be spent directly on our classroom and these amazing kindergartners!

poolnoodle

Help!!  I know that it is November but I am in desperate need of several “pool noodles.”  If you have any laying around in your garage, I would be happy to replace them in the spring.  Thanks.

Here is what you need to know for the week:

  • Library Books:  If you are looking for your child’s library book, stop.  We never made it up to the library last week since we had no school on our Tuesday Book Check-Out day.
  • Monday:  Please return Nightly Reading Homework, book bag and Poetry Journal.  We will go to gym and art today.
  • Tuesday:  I will be attending the Math Academy in the morning.  This training allows me to receive the most effective math instruction for your child.  Mrs. Smith will be the guest teacher.  The class will go to the Media Center and have music with Mrs. Baloga.
  • Wednesday:  Today is Late Start!  School will begin at 9:35 a.m.  We will have Mad Science in the afternoon.  Parent/teacher conferences will be held in the evening.
  • Thursday:  We will have Music with Mrs. Baloga.  Parent/Teacher conferences will be held in the evening.
  • Friday:  Popcorn Friday.  Have your child bring in 25 cents for each bag of popcorn they would like to purchase.  Limit 4 bags.

Words of the Week:  go  we

Poetry:  Mr. Turkey

Reading:  Retelling the story ( beginning/middle/end)

Writing:  Opinion writing:  The students are doing a great job with writing their opinions, knowing to start with “I think…”  Just had to share Ali’s opinion!:)

Math:  We are starting Unit 3-Numbers 0-10

Science:  Pushes and Pulls

Week of November 7, 2016

Dear Families,

I hope you are having a great weekend and enjoyed the extra hour of sleep!  I know I sure did!  Here is what’s happening in our kindergarten class:

  • Monday:  Please return Nightly Literacy Activities, book bag, poetry journal and library book.  We will have gym with Mr. Murua and art with Mrs. Doman.
  • Tuesday:  No School!  Don’t forget to vote!
  • Wednesday:  We will start our new investigation on Pushes and Pulls in science today!
  • Thursday:  We will go to music with Ms. Baloga.
  • Friday:  We will go to the computer lab with Mrs. Ackerman and gym with Mr. Murua.

Leader in Me:  Hopefully your child has been using the term “synergize” and demonstrating habit #6 at home.  Our definition for “synergize” is working together is better.  I have received a couple of entertaining emails on “synergize” from several families.  It is great to see Leader in Me being carried over at home.   We would love to see any pictures of your family synergizing at home, feel free to send them to me at wrightt1@dearbornschools.org.

This week we will be learning about Habit # 7- Sharpen the Saw!  This habit is all about having balance in your life.

sharpen-the-saw

Although we will be learning lots of different things in kindergarten, here is a quick overview:

Reading:  Making connections with stories that we read.

Writing:  Opinion writing.  Kindergartners love to tell us their opinions!  During Writer’s Workshop we will learn the difference between a fact and an opinion and write about them.

Math:  Counting and Classifying

Science:  Pushes and Pulls

Social Studies:  Needs vs. Wants

A Few Last Things…

  • Conference Reminder slips:  These will be sent home on Monday in your child’s red folder.  At Lindbergh we are committed to have 100 percent attendance for parent/teacher conferences!  Please return the bottom of your reminder slip as soon as you can.
  • Ring of cards:  You may have noticed a ring of cards in your child’s book bag.  These are important words that your child will encounter frequently while reading.  Please practice the words with your child at home.  We will also practice them at school during Word Work so make sure that the ring of cards is kept in your child’s  book bag.

Lastly,

The 43rd Annual Lindbergh PTA Holiday Boutique
is Saturday, November 12 from 9:30 AM – 4:00 PM.
This is one of the biggest fundraisers for the Lindbergh PTA and proceeds directly benefit our children.
Many volunteers are needed to make this event successful. Please review the volunteer opportunities and signup for the time(s) that work best for you. Any time you can give is greatly appreciated!

Come and see our Mad Science Basket!  Thanks to everyone who donated towards our basket!  A huge kudos to our hardworking Homeroom Parents to spent countless hours creating this year’s Mad Science, worth over an estimated $3000.00.

Until next time…
Ms. Wright

Wayne County Regional Enhancement Education Millage Proposal

School districts in Wayne County have placed a proposal on the November 8th ballot to provide added funding for our schools. It is the “Regional Enhancement Millage Proposal.”

If approved by the entire county, the 2 mil proposal will generate approximately $6.2 million from Dearborn but the District will receive $7.8 million in additional funding for our schools.  Money would go to local schools starting this year and the millage expires after six years.  Continue reading »

We love Science!

Dear Families,

Here are a few science pictures  from yesterday.  I posed the question:  What would happen if we put skittles in water?  Our kindergarten scientists came up with many predictions. So we tested it out and recorded our results in our science folder. Take a look at our results:

img_0410img_0409img_0412 img_0413 img_0414 img_0415

Then Enna’s family did an exciting science experiment at home. We wanted to try it too so Enna’s mom sent in the materials.  Ask your scientist about it.   Many of the students wanted to try it again at home, so I am putting the link: https://bitzngiggles.com/spooky-expanding-ghost/.  Thanks Enna’s family!

Week of October 24, 2016

Dear Families,

I hope you are enjoying this beautiful day!  Here is what you need to know for our week ahead in kindergarten:

Monday:  Please return Nightly Literacy Homework, book bag, poetry journal and library book.  Please make sure your child has appropriate clothes for gym and art.  I will be sending home a “Think Win-Win” sheet today for homework.  It will be due on Friday ( but can be returned anytime before) so we can place in our Leadership Notebooks.

Tuesday:  Today we will be checking out new books from the Media Center.  The students will go to music with Mrs. Baloga.  We will also select new leadership positions today.  Make sure to ask your kindergartner what position they selected.

Wednesday:  We will have Mrs. Smith, one of our favorite guest teachers in the morning so I can attend science training.  Last time she was in our class, she was so impressed with what a wonderful class we have.  I will be back after lunch, just in time for Mad Science.  🙂

Thursday:  We will go to music with Mrs. Baloga.

Friday:  We will go to the computer lab with Mrs. Ackerman and Physical Education with Mr. Murua.  The “Think Win-Win” Homework sheet is due today.

halloween

Monday: (October 31, 2016)

Happy Halloween! Your child is invited to wear his/her Halloween costume to school. Please no masks or pretend weapons!

At 9:00 a.m. the kindergartners will parade down the halls for the rest of the school to see with a short Halloween video and party afterwards.  Around 11:00 a.m., the students will change out of their costumes and we will begin our regular kindergarten routine.  If you are interested in volunteering from 9:00-11:00 a.m., please leave a comment below or email me at wrightt1@dearbornschools.org.

If students would like to bring a take-home treat to pass to the class, that would be fine.  Please make sure that it is peanut-free and enough for 21 students.  Thanks!

Here is a list of who is bringing what to our party:

  • 24 *Krispy Kreme Donuts (must be peanut free)–  Evan’s family
  • 1 gallon of apple cider–Olivia’s family
  • 12 apples ( these will be sliced up during the party)–Ali’s family
  • cut-up fruit (enough for 21 students)– pending

Although there are many different things we are working on in class, here is the brief overview:

Language Arts:  We have been working on “Eagle Eye” and “Lips the Fish” which are good strategies readers use when they come to an unknown word.  Ask your child to tell you about it.

Math:  We are starting Unit 2 which is all about sorting and matching objects along with continued practice with number 0-5.

Science:  We are continuing our study of our Five Senses plus using science tools appropriately.

Social Studies:  We are working on “Getting Along with Others”  which ties in with our Leader in Me.

Writer’s Workshop:  We are working on writing personal narratives.  Our kindergarten writers love sharing their writing with the class!

habit-5

Leader in Me:  Habit 5  Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood!  For most of us, this can be the most difficult habit to learn.  Listening is a difficult task for many to do.  I always explain to the students that the reason we have 2 ears and one mouth is that we are suppose to listen twice as much as we talk! 🙂

One More Thing:

Please remember that school hours are from 8:35-3:35 p.m.  We really appreciate when you make appointments after dismissal.  It shows your child how you value the time we spend in school.  Thanks for your support!
