Field Trip Fun!

Dear Families,

Our kindergartners sure had fun during today’s field trip to Kroger and Lifetime Fitness.  First we loaded up the school bus and headed to Kroger.

While exploring Kroger, our kindergartners reviewed many of the different social studies concepts we have been learning in  class such as needs/ wants and goods/services. After our tour of the Kroger store, the students “synergized” into small learning groups while completing their social studies journal.

Then we boarded the bus and headed to Lifetime Fitness where our class had to teach Mrs. Stetz’s class different “pushes and pulls” stations.  The students used balloons, racquets, scooters, hockey sticks, and bean bags to demonstrate their understandings of pushes and pulls.

Excitement in Room 114

Dear Families,

You may have already heard the exciting news but if not, here is it.  This afternoon after music, a mysterious letter and package was left in our classroom.  Of course, the students and I had to open them both up right away.  Here is a look at the note.

elf-004

So the students voted on the name of our newest member in our classroom.  His name is Elfie!

elf-003

After I came back from dismissing everyone outside I found Elfie had already found some friends.  They had done “word work” and was practicing their words of the week!  Imagine that!  I think Elfie will fit in with our class!

A few other things:

  • The students really enjoyed the PBiS reward this afternoon!  Thanks to Dominic’s mom for helping us.  Also, in order to make the reward in December, your child needs to stay on green 14 out of 17 days.  The reward will take place on Friday, December 23rd with a Holiday movie and hot chocolate!  Please encourage your child to make good choices each and every day in kindergarten.
  • Field trip Update:  permission slips/money is due tomorrow.  Chaperones do not have to pay.  There will be room on the bus for chaperones to join us.

That is all for now!

Ms. Wright and Elfie

A Big Day in Kindergarten!

Dear Families,

We had a great time at our Red Wing assembly this morning.  In fact, our very own Maggie got up on stage and won a Red Wing Water bottle!

After the assembly, we turned in our hockey jerseys for our science lab coats.  I posed the question to the kindergarten scientists “which car will go down the ramp the fastest?”  The scientists got into small groups and made ramps out of blocks to observe and race the four different cars.

Next, we tied in our Writer’s Workshop with the car race and wrote our opinions about which car would win the race.

After lunch, we actually tested out the four cars in each of the four lanes.  And the winner was…….

the green car!  It won every time!  Here are some of our hypotheses:

  • Scientist Olivia thought “it was because the wheels were faster!”
  • Scientist MacKenzie noticed “the green car was longer and started a little ahead of the others.”
  • Scientist Levi explained, “the back wheels on the green car are bigger and pushed the car faster down the ramp!”

A special thanks to Trevor Kleczynski who loaned his favorite car ramp in honor of science!

We ended our big day with our Cookie Reward!

Here are a few pictures from yesterday’s social studies lesson.  The students worked in small groups deciding whether things were “needs” or “wants.”  All I can say is that there were some very interesting conversations!  Please discuss with your child about needs and wants at home.  Our definition of a need is something that we need to live or survive.  Our definition of a want is something you would like to have.

Pete the Cat and Pigeon Take-Home Bags

Dear Families,

A huge thank you goes to Evan’s grandma who made our class the coolest Pete the Cat and Pigeon Take-Home bags!  We love them!

As a class, we went over the procedure of what to do when the bag travels home.  Please make sure that everything gets place back in the bag.  The bag needs to be returned the next school day.

Noah and Enna were excited to be the first ones chosen to take Pigeon and Pete home!

Thanks to Ali’s mom for bringing in a delicious treat for Ali’s birthday.  The kindergartners really enjoyed the warm cup of hot chocolate and doughnut hole.  Happy Birthday Ali!
